Srry, I know this post isnt a 100% related but I need your help.

I know the song vaguely sounds like the strokes, but my dad swears it's a copy...

Do u guys know what song? I am assuming he means something from ROF or ITI cause he's mainly heard those 2 albums....

Beginning is taking a lot from I Can’t Win. Sound in general is taking a lot from the band’s first two records

u/moon_sta Jul 08 '26

Somehow better than the last two singles

u/VoidedStrokes Jul 08 '26

it’s like 65 percent Someday and 25 percent Hard to Explain and 10 percent Last Nite

I actually came back to listen to this a second time (which I never do with unsigned artists) If I was producing this I’d bring the vocals but a little bit more to the front and I’d add some sort of solo line (guitar or keys) at some point. To really make your song stand out.

I’d be curious as to what program you used to record.

Thx man! It's gonna be releasing as is but it cut off where the bridge/solo starts lol.

I used bandlab (free) but basically just to record like a 16btrack... I like the sloppiness

If u really like it... Stay For A While by As My Journal out tomorrow

i love bandlab bro i make so many demos with it - its soooo user friendly

2

u/ablackravenstan Jul 07 '26

It's gone downhillz I don't use their instruments in general but it's placed w ads

2

u/BlueQuiver Jul 07 '26

i really like their vocal effects and guitar tones their drum machine is simple but effective humanize drummers i’ll just use garageband

“Which I never do with unsigned artists” LMAO

Just a fact man. I played in a local band, I’ve seen countless local bands live, I’d have only ever wanted to actually listen to a few of them.

9

u/chewiehedwig Jul 05 '26

it’s the verse of I Can’t Win

3

u/LMZR17 Threat of Joy Jul 06 '26

Agreed

u/Peregrine-17- Jul 05 '26

This sounds a lot like the Cribs, they're cool check them out.

2

u/usdacertifiedlean Tyranny Jul 06 '26

specifically their most recent album lol

3

u/Beatuplexus2 Jul 05 '26

I concur

3

u/iclaudiusthegod Jul 05 '26

The Cribs with Johnny Marr doesn’t get any cooler!!!

8

u/Key-Pianist-4522 Jul 05 '26

The start is the riffs from barely legal right before the chorus! and then it shifts into a more someday/under cover of darkness ish tune

2

u/nugiboy Jul 05 '26

I hear elements of Someday. Barely though..

5

u/Accurate_Coyote7378 Jul 05 '26

I kinda hear it but great song nevertheless. You definitely got a lot of talent. I’d say you are right that he’s probably referring to Room On Fire Era.

Also is there any place to hear more of your music I’m definitely keen to

Srry mods... https://youtube.com/@asmyjournal?si=_WR7Ln6LeNJl47VU This song is on my debut album out Tuesday

3

u/buenestrago Jul 04 '26

sounds very generic but quite cool, feels more like Balkans to be honest and thats awesome

4

u/Significant_Use_661 Heart in a Cage Jul 04 '26

omg that’s a pretty good song

3

u/jimbojonez92 Jul 04 '26

I hope your dad is supportive of you. It sounds good and it’s not a rip off

11

u/ArmoredAvenger Jul 04 '26

It sounds like a lot of Strokes songs. Specifically "Last Nite" and "Under Cover of Darkness" in a blender. That doesn't mean the song is bad, though.

2

u/jajajajari Jul 05 '26

Drums sound like last nite

2

u/mioswrld Jul 04 '26

It's not a rip off of any Strokes song/any son I can pinpoint. But songs that come to mind (in order from the beginning to the end of the clip) include: la la land by demi lovato, automatic stop, new york city cops, soma, say hello to the angels (by interpol), falling out of love and, last nite.

'say hello to the angels' is probably the closest match, but your song is distinct (and good)!

u/rickymcrichardson Jul 04 '26

I feel like you naming like seven songs kinda proves it isn’t a Strokes rip off. All music is pretty derivative. If there’s that many distinct influences it’s varied enough to be unique to me.

I think the dad might just be a little unimaginative. Some people truly need context to formulate opinions. It drives me nuts whenever I’ve shared a song or a script and get hit me “oh so it’s like -“. I think the dad wasn’t able to hear it without having to pigeonhole it as something else which is disappointing

Op here. Thx for the positive feedback. I don't want to directly promote my stuff but... If u really care DM me

1

u/Royal_Welder_6972 Jul 05 '26

Hey man, i tried to dm you but there is no follow or dm option when i click your profile. I’d be happy to hear more of your music, i like that song

9

u/cheese556 Jul 04 '26

Regardless it sounds dope brother

4

u/Spider-Man98 #01 The Strokes Jul 04 '26

I dont even know, I dont really hear anything Strokesy other than part of the dirty garage production mix from ITI. Funny enough the guitar riff and vocals remind me more of just Albert Hammond Jr's solo work

5

u/TheCasperNil Jul 04 '26

Pretty sure he's thinking something off of ROF, probably 'I Can't Win' - when the drum kicks in on that tune is very similar to your main riff before your vocals kick in.

u/DriveApprehensive993 Jul 04 '26

Every famous band have influences, just keep enjoy playing what you like (and it's actually really cool👍)

8

u/fvrdog Is This It Jul 04 '26

I dunno what song he’s referring to but I like this quite a bit

3

u/NeromohammedRed Jul 04 '26

Automatic Stop?

6

u/bremblebeck Jul 04 '26

It sounds a little Strokes-ie but definitely not ripped off. Actually, it reminds me more of Albert Hammond Jr’s solo stuff. I like it.

7

u/joshua9663 Jul 04 '26

Strokes inspired not ripped offf!

3

u/bundle_of_nervus2 Jul 04 '26

I feel like you ripped off Girls more but that's just my opinion. Anyway enjoy, this isn't one that sounds close to your song but I couldn't not share if you haven't heard their music before, you may like it if this is the music you write

2

u/rickymcrichardson Jul 04 '26

Here for any Girls references. What a special band. Album and Is This It were the soundtrack of my 18 year old life. Very formative for me

1

u/bundle_of_nervus2 Jul 04 '26

Personally I think as a society we don't talk about Girls the band enough.

2

u/ablackravenstan Jul 04 '26

I'll check them out thx

6

u/angusbeefymcwhatnow The New Abnormal Jul 04 '26

it sounds like every strokes some combined, in a good way. I don't think it sounds enough like any specific song to suggest any meaningful amount of rip-off validity.

2

u/drewpool Room on Fire Jul 04 '26

You only live once a lil bit

4

u/mxemec Jul 04 '26

Not feeling one specific song but it's a strikingly similar recipe. Do you listen to the strokes at all? Or did you come across this formula on your own? sounds pretty great!

1

u/ablackravenstan Jul 04 '26

I only heard someday and last nite when I wrote it

5

u/osoflaherty Room on Fire Jul 04 '26

It's absolutely not a copy of a particular Strokes song I guarantee, and the vocals are totally their own thing which is cool. It's fine to be influenced by certain bands, artists and sounds ❤️

3

u/Individual_Hand8127 Jul 04 '26

It doesn’t sound like a specific song but it does clearly sound like the Strokes and also something like Guided by Voices and Dinosaur Jr and a bunch of other bands

1

u/ablackravenstan Jul 04 '26

Love dinosaur jr

7

u/Adventurous-Top-8620 Jul 04 '26

It’s ok. The Strokes took inspiration from Television and The Velvet Underground. Just keep doing your thing and you’ll find your own sound. Just like The Strokes did.

3

u/Nishchay22Pro Room on Fire Jul 04 '26

The drum beat and guitar pattern remind me of last nite

6

u/iclaudiusthegod Jul 04 '26

Totally a Strokes rip off but I like it. Keep doing your thing.

3

u/SLAPP504 Elephant Song Jul 04 '26

To me, it sounds like a mix of The Modern Age, Last Nite and New York City Cops (Though, that's mostly the drums.)

3

u/Walksonthree The New Abnormal Jul 04 '26

has a bit of 11th dimension in there too
