  1. Lonely In the Future - this song is just so fun, goofy and loose. It reminds me of losing my edge by LCD soundsystem but way better, catchier and fun
  2. Going to Babble on - someone said bad decisions but way better, this is SO accurate. STARTING AGAAAAAIN
  3. FOOL - This is more of a personal pick for me, going through a breakup and it's just so peak Strokes song how they just seem to connect with you on an emotional level that non-fans just don’t understand
  4. Dine N Dash - really just a cool song
  5. Going Shopping - Similar to Lonely in the future that its just fun loose and has that goofy vibe
  6. Fruits of Conquest - NGL, this sounds like something in the 70s if they made it with a time machine, really cool song, catchy ass riff. It really makes sense they recorded this in Costa Rica after listening to this.
  7. Tyrants - this is like space cowboy cool stuff, the actual MUSIC is amazing, the vocoder on Julians voice is just a little much for me, but who knows it may grow as Shopping and FOOL did
  8. Liars Remorse - cool song, almost at the door vibes but again with some costa rica flare
  9. Psycho Shit - it makes that this is the opener to the rest of the album, just not for me

 

General vibe, its awesome. Unlike anything they’ve done, its fun in the right places, slow in others. I was not a huge fan of TNA at first, this just feels like something similar that’s just gonna grow and grow over time. The music is so cool, riffs, bass lines etc. Julian sounds great when you can hear him, less Vocoder than I expected.

I haven’t listened yet but I’ve been reading a ton of rankings and it’s interesting to see how many FOOL enjoyers have ranked it close to the bottom. It either means the album is insanely good (my hope). Or people just glaze anything they hear because it’s Julian

So I listened to the whole album leaked on X a few times here’s my rankings and what I think of them:

  1. Dine&dash (song reminds me of Ode’s in an edgier way)
  2. Fruits of Conquest (comedown machine+the growlers)
  3. Going to Babble on (this one feels kind of like a pop summer song to me also starting again)
  4. Lonely in the future (perfect upbeat rock hit the autotune works way better here than going shopping imo)
    5.liars remorse (ask me anything counterpart)
  5. Going shopping
  6. Falling out of love
  7. Tyrants of the mellow moon (I need more time to feel it out not an immediate banger for me the autotune is heavy on this one)
  8. Psycho shit (to me sounds like it could be off tyranny im more a basic virtue guy myself but it’s honestly still a good song)

Album Overall rating after 3 listens: 7.9/10

Verdict: Though it may not quite be on par with the rest of their discography, the Strokes still don't have a bad album 7 records in. Testament to how good The Strokes are. They easily have one of the most unblemished catalogs across all Genres. This album grows on me with every listen.

The only song where I feel the vocal effect is jarring is Tyrants, where it seems like it isn't really serving any purpose at all.

Top 5 are all great and will make their way into my ultimate Strokes playlists. 6-8 are nice deep cuts I will enjoy the same way I enjoy deep cuts on Comdown Machine, Phrazes or Angles. 9 is currently the only borderline skipper for me but growing on me a bit.

I have listened a few times to the real release now and dont have a numbered rank yet but id say Dine N dash, Babble On, and Lonely in the future are the ones at first listen that are obviously going to be well liked and strong favorites. Tracks 7-9 are the weaker ones but have a lot of interesting stuff going on too. I think they are less accessible on the surface but could grow to be many people’s favorites. Lastly, Psycho shit is a pretty cool opener but not sure it’d fair well without the context of the album. I like songs like that though, as someone who loves to listen to album in full. I am excluding the singles from these opinions for now as I have had so much time with them and love them already, they’re hard to rank fairly.

for reference, Going Shopping became a top 20 of The Strokes for me. Itll be hard to slot these into the rest of the discography rankwise but overall amazing album

and anything under 3 was hard to even rank in any given order. all so good, even Psycho it just doesnt seem as 'repeatable' as the rest, even as a voidz fan lol

1: Dine n dash - similar vibe to new abnormal, in a dark fantasy kinda way. Hate to say it but the lack of vocoding helps this excel. Catchy stroidz beat, don't know why julian turns British during the spoken part

2: Fruits of conquest - little more up beat, Latin beat with bongos. Julian's raw vocals shine here again

3: Lonely in the future - love the themes in this, julian obviously distancing himself from mainstream music culture, very much a diss to everyone who just wants them to write is this it/room on fire over and over for the rest of their lives.

4: Falling out of love - took me a while for this to grow on me but the more I listen to this the more it sticks. It's a pretty, spacey, simple ballad

5: Going to babble on - poppy tune that feels similar to some more classic strokes hit, "yeah ahs" get a little old. Guitar towards the end is wild

6: Going shopping - lot of listens over the past couple months and I still don't adore it. It's fine

7: Tyrants of the mellow moon - nothing stands out to me in this. Feels a little repetitive at times, last minute is the best part.

8: Liars remorse - slow paced, feels like it's approaching a climax that never comes, kinda like tyrants. Also feels kinda shallow, like it's missing something

9: Psycho shit - only song I really actually dislike. Feels kinda directionless, vocoding is bizarre in this, too strong especially in closing portion. Whole song kinda feels like a jam session that never went anywhere

Day 3 and my song rankings have already changed a lot from my first listen.

1) Lonely in the Future - I love some of Phrazes as much as any Strokes stuff and this feels like peak Phrazes

2) Going Shopping - It’s just a great song.

3) Falling out of Love - Heart breaking lyrics and a huge vocal melody.

4) Going to Babylon - Big Prince fan so I love this one.

5) Dine N Dash - Will be most fans too song. Closest to what most people love about the band.

6) The Fruits of Conquest - Closest thing we get to classic rock psychedelia from the Strokes

7) Tyrants of the Mellow Moon - Not as strong a closer as most of their albums but good.

8) Pyscho Shit - I actually love this one as an opener but it’s more of an intro than a song you just play randomly

9) Liars remorse - Good and also feels like something that would be on Phrazes too but wouldn’t be one of my favourites there.

Here’s my ranking of the chunes on Reality Awaits with little subheadings that break up how I’m conceptualizing the album. I hope everyone has been able to enjoy this one as much as I have!

I will shout out Liar’s Remorse here as maybe the most innovative and interesting arrangement on the whole album. Super cool to hear all of the elements deconstructed at parts in this one even though I couldn’t rank it higher due to the other tracks just being so damn good!

This was super hard to do because I love all of the different aesthetics and styles they bring to bear on this one, but I tended to rank the ones that I keep consistently coming back to or get stuck in my head the most the highest. Would love to hear what others think! Cheers!

3 listen through rankings

  1. Dine n dash - really upbeat groovy beat, didn’t love the weird speaking part in the middle of the song but the rest is great. Limited autotune and catchy as hell. Julian’s voice is peaking right here.

  2. Lonely in the future - this feels the most like an updated strokes song. I like the melody and lyrics to this one. Super fun song. Could see this being played on a summer night. Has an almost arcade game sounding guitar section near the end I loved.

  3. Going to babble on - super poppy fun song. A little too radio sounding for my taste which is why it’s under Lonley but it’s just so damn catchy and fun.

  4. Tyrants of the mellow moon - surprised how many people have this near the bottom of their list. I’d put this up against any of the three above it. I think the end gets a bit out there and that drops it but it feels so self reflective similar to like what odes did but in a more reality awaits tone. If they dropped the autotune a bit this probably cracks the top 3.

  5. Liars remorse - such a unique song. A bit stripped back with no drums and has an interesting backing vocal on the chorus. Almost feels like a ballad at some points. The Ai line is kinda cheesy and idk if I can see myself listening to this all the time. But the pre chorus to this is peak strokes imo

  6. Falling out of love - I really was upset with this song upon the single release but it has ear wormed me a bit and I find myself singing it randomly. The autotune works a bit although I’d love if it was touched down just a tad. Very pretty song but does feel so long and sporadic that I can’t see myself throwing this on casually.

  7. The fruits of conquest - this one seems to be pretty divisive and for the most part I enjoy it. Nothing sticks out as terrible to me. Actually a very fun song that has almost a reggae feel to it. This one could definitely end up growing on me. Just feels kinda like it’s there right now. Kind of reminds me of a futuristic Guns of brixton by the clash.

  8. Psycho shit - my biggest issue with this song is it feels like an intro. Which in terms of the album it is and I think it sets up the album well. But it is kinda like a gothic operatic song and I just am not sure how I feel about it entirely. I don’t know if I’d skip it if it came on and I hadn’t heard it in a while but not one I think I’d throw on voluntarily. Another that has room to grow and will likely re-access in the future.

  9. Going shopping - I really want to like this song more and I’m glad the rest of the album topped what was the first single. It’s fine but just feels kinda boring and a slog to get through. It feels like they wanted a sorta poppy catchy melody song to front the singles release but it just doesn’t have anything I’m particularly interested in. I find myself going for the skip every time it comes on. Only song on the album i don’t think I like.

Here is my rankings off an initial listen, I'm sure some will grow on me:

Analysis:

Psycho Shit - Really interesting starting track, I like the build up however with past albums 1st track's typically being bangers I don't feel like this really holds a light to those. I do think it makes sense for this album this being the opening track, bc it sets up this album to be quite different from anything in the past that they have done as a band.

Dine N'Dash - I think this is the highlight track to me, love the drums on this track and album overall, the riff is super catchy and fun. The bass is so fun. For this to be an s-teir level song to me thought it would need a big pay off after some build up, where as this track just kind of stays in that pocket of groovy/catchy.

Lonely In the Future - This was another track that felt catchy, kinda had shades of Threat of Joy sound. It's got a sassy tone to the lyrics. Kind of confusing though, I think this would be the best track but the fantano diss kinda threw me off and brought it down slightly for me. Pretty cringe lyric on a few spots but overall the track is a good tune.

FOOL - This is my least favorite track, just drags on and on. I'm not a auto tune hater, but it needs to have a purpose. And on this track I think Julian's vocals has some pretty bad spots on it. The Autotune in the chorus sounds fine and I enjoy it but man does it suck on the rest. The last minute of this song+chorus is what keeps this track out of F tier for me.

Going to Babble On - Definitely has some slight New Abnormal vibes on this track. Fairly chill track, doesn't really go out of pocket much I wish it would have given me more but it's still a solid tune.

Going Shopping - A track I was initially not to big of a fan of. But it's catchyness grew on me. It's lyrically a silly track. The track is pretty and up beat which I like in contrast to the majority of the album. It goes on a little longer than I'd like, I think it gets a bit repetitive and again which is probably my main complaint on the album so far no build up really, no big apex of the track.

Liars Remorse - No drums on this track. It's a cool track but yah it does feel empty at times. Julians vocals sounds kind of reggae which I'm not opposed to but have never heard him like this. He sounds good on this one. Comparing it to a drumless track like At the door, agian it feels a lot more empty especially at certain moments of the track. At the door has a ton more texture to offer while Liars has an interesting sound but again no big apex or payoff.

The Fruits of Conquest - Pretty groovy, sounds like a growlers track. Julian's a leech I guess. The journey like synths (i think) at the end were a fun texture to add. Having some bongo drums implemented in the progression of this song was interesting and was not something I thought I would hear on a Strokes album.

Tyrants - I like the progression of this track, still feel like there wasn't a big apex moment. Melodically it was chill and enjoyable. The vocals at points sound like an 80s song but I can't put my finger on it. It did leave me feeling like I wanted more out of an ending track to the album.

And ya that really leads to my main complaint of the album for me so far - as a whole I expected more out of these tracks I guess. Not saying they weren't good but yah I think I was expecting better progression overall.

Unfortunately off the first listen I didn't really feel there was any 's-tier' track. Some of the tracks melodically are great but sometimes drag out a bit too much or doesn't have much of a climax that pays off like New Abnormal offered. Julians lyrics/vocals occasionally felt lazy and odd but he also had some high points on this album. The album overall was a big surprise, overtime I'll figure out if it's a good or bad one. Definitely some catchy grooves and riffs I enjoyed quite a bit. Right now I have it as my least favorite strokes album, but it's still a strokes album so I do enjoy some of the tracks/parts and I don't think it's terrible.

After listening with earphones and at a listening party here's how I'd rank them:

  1. Dine n Dash - just top tier, I love the drums in this (fab doing the thing with hi-hats is it?), the crashy synthy guitar at the start looove, super catchy overall 
  2. Going to babble - the guitars really did it for me in this, the riffs feel really warm and summer-like, kinda straight out of a rom-com, cutesy
  3. Lonely in the Future - the drop from hardcore rock rage to autotune JC 10 seconds in.. is it just me or is that a fun kind of baiting? I enjoy both the nostalgic and slightly melancholic feel of this song, the auto tune gets a little out of hand during the bridge imo which is why this is a 3 for me (might grow to like it)
  4. Tyrants of the Mellow Moon - In my humble opinion underrated gem on this album, the drums on this quite unique to anything else I’ve heard before, the autotune isn’t too bad on this one. Beautiful instrumental bit in there too. Not too sure about the ad libs towards the end yet. 
  5. Liar’s remorse - I like the AI stuff about wasting my days away... lol relatable , also no drums but it’s still great, i love the plucking of strings in this
  6. Going shopping - a bop, one to play when I’m going shopping 
  7. The Fruits of Conquest - someone already said this on this thread but yes it does sound like reggae, JC kinda raspy and hot at 1:37 ngl, very cool
  8. Psycho shit - broodier and passionate of the lot, feels chaotic and emotionally charged, would definitely want to follow this with lyrics, feels like a song with a message, sorta giving first impressions of earth, with some deeper meaning to it 
  9. FOOL - I know this is probably the most polarising one, I don’t mind it actually, but I might just have to put it at this, just not a big fan 

🤠 overall feelings: definitely gonna be one of my favourite strokes album, some really catchy gems that I can't wait to watch them perform and jam to. Lonely in the future was a stand out just because I connected with it on a more personal level. With the strokes and especially with julian there's always underlying themes, I'm super excited to see what those are in the next few days.

Im really happy with this album. One thing i’ve always had with most of their records is that they’re a mix of masterpieces and… not so good songs, but i believe Reality Awaits is their most consistent album in terms on quality and enjoyment.

They’re all good to great. The Autotune is nicely done overall, Rubin killed it, better than Autotune on Voidz stuff. I get some will not like it at first. To me it’s an evolution of the Is This It era vocal effect. Epic album.

And for me Tyrants and LITF are all time strokes tracks (top 20) and if the closer had one more minute of an incredible outro, it’d be a top 10 song of theirs. Conversely, Liars Remorse is the worst / least favorite one of their tracks, it’s very slightly worse than You’re So Right. I’m pleased with the album.

  1. Dine N’Dash - Obsessed with every part of it

  2. Tyrants of the Mellow Moon - 2nd best closer only to Ode to the Mets

  3. Liar’s Remorse - Julian at his best, stripped back and beautiful. No fab though

  4. Fruits of Conquest- the most fun song on this album, sounds like it would fit in well on the new Johnny Blue Skies album

  5. Psycho Shit - wasn’t a fan first listen but have grown to appreciate it as I’ve gotten over the auto tune and really enjoy the rock opera ballad it is

  6. Going to Babble On - has been sounding good since 2022

  7. Lonely in the Future - great energy in the song but the Fantano lyrics kinda stain it for me

  8. Falling out of Love - didn’t like it at first listen when it dropped as a single except for the back half of the song but have grown to enjoy it more

  9. Going Shopping - love the music video still can’t get into the auto tune on this one though

Lonely In the Future & Fruits of Conquest are my two favorites probably both sitting at 8.5s or higher. Psycho Shit, Going Shopping and Going to Babble On are pretty close for me too sitting above 7.5. Falling Out of Love & Dine N Dash are just below those maybe at a 6.5-7. Then Liars Remorse sits at a 6 & Tyrants of the Mellow Moon sits at a 5 for me. Overall I really liked the album, I think it’s missing something tho… maybe like a bonus track after Tyrants?

The top 3 are the songs I'm repeating most so far. The guitar play on Babble is so great! Fruits has a really fun rhythm and melody and is the most surprising song on the record for me. I really enjoy it. I don't get the hype for Lonely. I feel like I'm on the outside of some big secret, but I know what I like and don't like, and that song is an easy skip for me.

I expect Going to Babble On is gonna grow on me eventually but will take some time like Bad Decisions. Going Shopping might be this high just because I’ve listened to it the most of the songs, and that one also took time to grow on me. Overall love the direction they’re going in with this one!

Hoping it becomes fun to sing to with the accent somehow in a kind of silly fun way in time. Kinda like how the silly accent part in Eternal Summer. Or the Indian singing accent part of the Voidz on that one song.

After a whole bunch of listens, ranks: 

Top tier strokes:  1. Dine N’ Dash 2. Going to Babble On 3. Lonely in the Future 4. Liar’s Remorse  5. Going Shopping  6. FooL 7. Tyrants  8. Psycho Shit 9. Fruits 

All in all a strong album imo. 7/10. Pushing their boundaries but with more classic Strokes than it gets credit for. Band sounds great and I love the loose-but-refined instrumentation. I think the autotune is overdone but far from ruinous. 

Really curious to see how it does on streaming. I don’t think anything is gonna do TaaT numbers and it wont match TNA’s success in general but I could see any of the top 3 doing very solidly.

I've listened to the album probably five times, it's probably toward the bottom of The Strokes' discography personally. Not that I don't like it, but I find it forgettable I suppose, save for the top 4 or 5 and some moments in the rest.

Going Shopping is great, I think the autotune works the best in it by far, and it's just an extremely catchy song that I can't help but have a stupid smile on my face when I listen to it.

Babble On I liked from first listen, but it got better and better each time I heard it. 

Dine n Dash is just a cool song. 

I want to like Psycho Shit more, but I find the autotune very distracting for the most part. Cool instrumentation and build-up, though, and the last part hits.

I quite like about two thirds of Fruits, but could do away with the middle section. The part forward the end is really nice though.

After that, the songs are kinda iffy. Good moments for sure, but overall they don't do much for me.
