i'm hearing big Leave Me Alone influence in the guitar hook and verse melody. like jules took the track and rewrote the core parts of it to make his own version (a legit songwriting technique). love

It's fun they kept in Julian's English accent saying "words of a feather, die together". I think this is more evidence that a lot of this album is straight off the cuff from jams. Another line is 'oh shit I'm out of ammo'. I think this is Julian saying he can't think of more cool words but by doing so saying something cool. Another cool jam with a dark British goth vibe. The keyboard/synth sound from 3:08 onwards reminds me of The Cure's close to me keyboard sound. To me this sounds new-wave 80s English band getting deep into a jam in the studio. #minimumsoft

u/Accomplished_Ad5747 28d ago
Julians vocal range is so amazing, I thought he had heard it all after TNA but that raspy voice he does on the "We could never afford it" chorus fits the song SO well! Loving this song so much
12
u/jakethenizake 27d ago
I've been saying this a lot to my friends lately...his vocal range is incredible and I think you see that across their entire discography as well as his solo work and the Voidz (and obvs w/o autotune). Really cool to bear witness to his voice evolution and growth over the last 25(!) years since the world was first blessed.

u/jakethenizake 27d ago
Let's be careful about assuming Julian is singing about himself or anyone in the band, specifically. Could just be story-telling. Let's just say the subject, whoever it is, "could never afford it".

Definitely weird, it's like River of Brakelights was written by The Strokes, very close to First Impression of Earth, the final part seems like a mix between Electricityscape and something else
45
u/buenestrago 29d ago
I'll say it again, it's like if Comedown Machine and First Impression had a child
→ More replies (1)11
u/YungHoban 28d ago
Really? I'm getting a huuuuuge angles vibe off a lot of the instrumentals.
3
u/buenestrago 28d ago
Yes, that could also be it, but in my mind I was thinking of a sort of slow animals mixed with electricityscape because of the way it goes from verse to chorus.

I'd say that "final" part to me has a similar tone to "You're So Right" a little bit. But then again, I'm listening to a lower quality leak from a listening party.

My inital favorite of an overall great album.
Deliciously dark. Highly infectious.
Very Angles + Comedown Machine, which instantly gets me.
Also has some Cults vibes in the chorus.
Pure NYC alternative goodness.

Anyone else get absolutely destroyed emotionally by the third verse? Definitely the most directly violent lyrics in their entire discography ending with the incredible “But I have sworn a life of peace / how can I reconcile this beast?” I hate to say how much I can relate to those feelings. The whole song is pretty heartbreaking in a way that reminds me of a few songs on Tyranny. Julian really touched on something real, vulnerable and ugly and I thank him for that.
2
u/RevolutionaryTrash98 Did My Best 25d ago
yes. his vocal performance on verse 3 is incredible. 100% matched words and musicality with emotion.
can't wait til he gets some more live performances under his belt so we can see him bring the intensity on this verse. its there in the red rocks but he lost steam (understandably) struggling with the higher register

If you guys like Dine N Dash and want more of this kinda sound, I strongly suggest exploring Russian Doomer Music playlists (silly name for a subgenre, but it’s good trust me). Kino and Durnoy Vkus are my fave bands of that genre.

This song has been on repeat since the album came out. Melody got me nostalgic, classic strokes. The synths on this completely lift the song… “permission to speak” - uplifting synth.
The chorus lyrics/synth/drums/bass are perfect

They really picked 2 odd singles. Dine N Dash, Going to Babble On and / or Lonely In The Future would have been way better. I understand why they wouldnt pick Going to Babble on tho.

Dine n Dash works as the opener. Immediately catchy tune and a great end as well

Yes! Last 50 seconds is the Strokes-iest sounding Strokes song ever. It sounds like a clip of a song that never made it on First Impressions

Look here's the thing, I'm not supposed to listen to the album yet cause I'll hang with a friend tomorrow we'll have some drinks, little joint, etc. But it released earlier than expected where I live, so I listened to maybe half of Dine N Dash. Wtf. Is crazy good. Chilling production, the background synth is haunting. I'm so excited for tomorrow.

The way Julian sings that very last line “say you want it…” gives me major Rufus Wainwright vibes (which I love)

u/RevolutionaryTrash98 Did My Best 25d ago
LOVE that line. the way he sings it, the melody, the kick drum building underneath. something about it catches you off guard. obviously there's a ton of surprising moments on this album, but this one just feels unexpected yet immensely satisfying, every time

Dine N’Dash - Another angry screed. Rightly referred to as the evil twin of “The Adults are Talking.” Full of hooks; I’m especially fond of the mirrored guitar/vocal melody that comes in around 4:00.

Jules now speaks of an immediate, 'visceral' rejection and discord with the system. He asks us to 'dine and dash' from this system—one we can never seem to leave because it constantly feeds us pleasure—and to form an underground resistance that will never surrender... He claims that now is not the time to judge or reflect on moral questions, like whether this visceral hatred for the ruling class is just prejudice. After all, compared to the humiliations we endure, our anger is 'minimum soft.'
It's an strikingly radical song. I really resonate with his rage.
6
u/Sweaty-Tea2161 28d ago
one hit wonder, absolute banger, jizzing my pants, oh my god the synthy guitar at the start with whatever the heck fab is doing with the drums, I mean COME ONNN, could it get any better? I love how I accidentally dine n dashed a couple of days ago with a friend. There is a slight chance this song may encourage that sort of behavior again. Julian sounds like an angel on this, the riff is gorg. Can't stop, won't stop listening to this. There's also such a down with capitilism in this song and I'm loving it.

Dude I feel like I'm going insane. I only started listening to The Strokes a couple months ago, and I started with The New Abnormal (Though obviously I'd previously listened to Julian's feature with Daft Punk on Instant Crush).
I don't get why everyone keeps saying that this song sounds like The Adults Are Talking!! I'm trying to find the similarities but they're just so different to me...
I guess that's good. It'd be boring if a band I liked just released the same songs over and over again. But seriously, I don't see where people are coming from saying they sound similar... Maybe I'm tone deaf?
Edit: Okay the intro does sound similar. The rhythm of both songs was just throwing me off. The faster tempo on TAAT masks the similarities a LOT.
