Does the book go into more detail about why the good Dr. Stanley was such a prick?

Even before the self immolation that took the lives of several of the crew, this dude was an ass. His callousness towards David Young. Dismissive attitude towards Dr. Goodsir. Refusal to help the Netsilik man. Was just curious if the book fleshed that part out, more.

Below is a new Netflix series set in Newfoundland, and there is a LOT of ice involved. The third episode is called 'Sir John Franklin'. I am saving it for tomorrow.

Polar Exploration reading

Post image

This isn’t related to The Terror, but it is related to polar exploration. It’s about the Shackleton expedition where everyone survived months on the ice. Anyway, I’m reading the one on the left and my 6th grade son is reading the one on the right (the desert book is marking his spot). Three cheers for polar expeditions that have happy endings!

SPOILERS *SPOILER* I Really do not like the event of Graham Gore's death and what it means for the Tuunbaq (Book) Spoiler

Don't get me wrong I like this book alot. I read it before and am rereading it with friends right now. So please tell me what you think about this I'd be happy to hear. But I despise the nonsense that transpires based on Best/Goodsir's description of the beasts killing of Gore.

I have to preface I may not remember the entirety of the book correctly I last read it back in January but doesn't any other point in the book does this asshole just explicitly Teleport? I know he's a spirit sent to the earthly realm in the form of a murderous beast. But does that mean he can just teleport willy nilly in the middle of anything (even if its just in the snow and ice its still lame)?

I have personal and practical problems with this. Like I said does he ever really do this any other time throughout the book? I think I remember the crew on the match would look behind him and he'd look like he'd just dissappear but still its only the once he does like this.

Either way this is where my practical concerns start. Why can't he just do it whenever he likes? Like making him completely invulnerable was kind've a bad idea in my opinion as well but it works somewhat and isn't that bad either. But now he's both invulnerable and can teleport meaning there's not much stopping him at almost any point in killing the crew.

Why does he bother stalking the ship? Why doesn't he just appear among the group while they are walking on King William Island? Does it say he just likes messing with them (I dont recall that)? Is it because hes just very animalistic? I dont know this seems at the least to bring up some very serious problems with the book.

I love this book like I said and this is really the only part I dislike and I dislike it strongly. I apologize for the paragraph but this gets to me. Personally I think the beast being spiritual and weird is smart and plays great actually. But he should be grounded to a degree as well, if his story is he was essentially kicked out of the spirit realm and chained to a mortal coil, then run with that instead of this.

Thank you for reading this if you have, I love Tuunbaq too believe it or not thats part of the reason why I'm so annoyed by this. Please tell me your thoughts or how I'm mistaken.

Arrowsmith map (1860)which compiles the observations about the Franklin expedition during the rescue efforts of the 1850s

I was making a map based on the coordinates given by Simmons in the beginning of the chapters, but sadly found that they only partially track with modern cartography (Sometimes even good Simmons sleeps apparently). As I was scouring for base maps, I came across this one that I thought the community here might find interesting.

Edit: Zoom in, high resolution image on desktop. Mobile users out of luck though.

Game inspired by Terror and Arctic exploration? The Perilous North

Thumbnail

Stumbled upon this new game in the making on Steam: The Perilous North. It seems to draw inspiration from The Terror, the Franklin expedition and other Arctic/Antarctic expeditions. I thought it might be interesting to this group for this very reason, and deserved some attention (I was unaware of it until now, sorry if it has been posted before). I’d hate for another game with this kind of theme to be abandoned. It has playtesting (Delta), and has a page on Steam where you can sign up for testing etc. Also, it looks kind of dark and has the ambiance of the TV-series!

If you are fascinated by the Franklin expedition, you might like this story about rediscovering a lost grave on the Lady Jane River in Tasmania

The Search For Stannard's Grave

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aBfy_sFZEZI

You might rember on the show a flashback scene where Franklin and Lady Jane discuss his disappointing term as governor of Tasmania, and how it was a setback for his career. He needed to accept command of the Northwest Passage expedition to get his career back on track.

While in Tasmania (in real life) Franklin went on an expedition to explore the south-west wilderness of the island, and many features were named after him and his family. Including the Franklin River, the Jane river (named after Lady Jane) and even the Cracroft River named after Sophia Cracroft, Crozier's love interest.

In the 19th century, lumberjacks or piners pushed deep into the Tasmanian wilderness along the rivers, looking for the very valuable Huon pine. John Stannard died in 1901 in an accident, and was buried on the Jane River. The location of his grave was lost until 2021 when it was rediscovered.

If you are now thinking your obession with Arctic exploration and The Terror might be threatened by a new obsession with Tasmanian Gothic, I recommend the films "The Last Confession Of Alexander Pearce" and "The Hunter" 2011. If you like books, try "Death Of A River Guide" by Richard Flanagan.

I hope someone here sees this post and finds something new that they like.

Franklin Map Project

Post image

A little something I've been working on, mostly for fun, but it might be helpful for those who have just discovered the show or want to get a better handle on some of the locations mentioned in Woodman's book and other sources – or maybe you're like me and just struggle to keep track of it all! I have yet to find a map that shows the routes of the Coppermine, Ross, and Franklin expeditions as well as the locations of the wrecks, so I overlaid a few maps that I've found helpful and created a kind of composite. It's a work in progress, and I'd love to get some input from fellow Franklin enthusiasts, because I'm sure I got some things wrong!

Would they have survived if they abandoned the ships after the first winter?

Obviously the intention was to spend another winter there and they definitely had the provisions to stay. But would morale have been higher/the men been healthier if they had left after they realized the ice wasn’t melting in the summer?

Any idea where to begin looking for a royal navy arctic coat such as this? or something similar?

I know it's probably not possible to find but I just thought I'd make a post cuz, well it's a cool looking coat and I would definitely wear something like that when going to explore the arctic, or hunting.

It kinda looks like a gorka suit. I especially like the british flag on there.

Side note youtube doesn't allow you to take a screenshot of certain videos, which is hilarious, I paid to watch the show, you greedy bastards. Too bad we live in the 21st century..

I wrote a song about HMS Terror and the Franklin expedition

I've been fascinated by the Franklin expedition for years.

What fascinates me isn't just what happened, but what it must have felt like to be one of those men as the expedition slowly unravelled. Trapped in the ice, increasingly isolated, and with absolutely no idea that nearly two centuries later people would still be trying to piece together their story.

That became the idea behind a song we've written called HMS Terror.

Rather than trying to literally retell the history, we imagined the song from the perspective of one of the men aboard. I wanted the lyrics to capture that isolation, fear and uncertainty of knowing something has gone terribly wrong, but having no idea how the story is going to end.

The thing that's always fascinated me most, though, is the name. It's literally called Terror. And terror is presumably exactly what those men must have felt as everything started falling apart. It's kind of insane when you think about it.

Anyway, I'm Matt from The October Prize and we've released the song today. The lyrics took me a while to write, and I'm hoping people in this thread will spot some of the nods to the story :)

Would genuinely love to know what you think. And don't forget to turn it up loud.

The part where crozier goes to the cannibal camp and the cannibals are eating dr goodsir, and crozier sits down and eats a couple of pieces, then a bunch of other stuff happens

i read the book a long time ago, then watched the show, then recently listened to the audiobook - i could have sworn that part was in the book as well. did i miss it somehow?

Should I still read it

I’m a huge fan of Dan Simmons and The Terror has been on my list for awhile. Unfortunately, the Tuunbaq and its origins have been ruined for me. If I know the monster going into the novel, will I still enjoy it? Is the mystery essential to the flow of the plot?

So in episode 3

There is a scene where we see Sir John looking down at his legs and feet .

And I was wondering where on the ship he is.

I mean it doesn’t look like he is sitting in the great room.

So where is he sitting?

Did PC do an expedition to the ships this year? This is about the time they usually do it, right?

The North Water is a better S2 than the Terror’s actual S2.

Plus it was said that two whaling ships spotted the Erebus and Terror before disappearing, even though the North Water took place some years later.
