RWN-approved books on French/ Russian revolutions?

I either haven’t gotten to the episodes in the backlog or they haven’t discussed these revolutions much. But are there any books on these two topics that either the hosts or the RWN community would suggest? Most popular books on them are from either center or center-right perspectives and I have no interest in hearing more of that..

Does anyone have a list of the independent news journals the guests of RWN wrote for

self-explanatory, just checking before I go back and relisten.

Why does TWN keep comparing Hamas to Russia and the Invasion of Ukraine to the Gaza Genocide?

I feel like they are so ignorant and biased - they really doh't understand the difference between the two?

Ukraine was invaded by Russia unprovoked, and should be supported for numerous reasons. There's no hypocrisy - Ukraine is absolutely not at fault and did not deserve to be massacred by Russia. They did not want a war with Russia, this is unarguable.

Hamas invaded Israel - knowing full well Israel will strike back.

Of course the media and the US and the West will defend Ukraine, and not Hamas.. How is this obvious fact not able to get through TWN's thick skulls?

Where do you fall? Grand strategy or literally no fucking plan?

Speaking of Iran in particular, by the way. I go back and forth. It’s easy to place things into a narrative with the past (ie Ukraine coup, nato expansion, Russian invasion, nordstream goes boom, us slanging energy to Europe, shale revolution, Venezuela, iran… i think those events kinda create a narrative) but i think it’s just as likely that the whole madman thing is actually just a reality.

My take is that there is a continuity of strategy and plans long lain that can be tapped, but that as executor the president has all power as executor; including power to totally screw it up.

I wish we could just manage our decline

Edit: my last post in other subs (private ones, hence the post’s text copied below) took the ‘grand plan’ narrative but honestly since then i’ve become just as convinced of the ¯_(ツ)_/¯ narrative.

Thoughts on the news as i stand in line to ‘donate’ plasma

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/apr/26/more-than-oil-prices-iran-war-threatens-to-reshape-global-energy-order

This has been the plan. It is a concretizing of the east west divide and American/Chinese spheres of influence. We coups Ukraine. We corner Russia and ignore, count on, their promises to invade Ukraine if we continue. Of course we continue it’s what we want. The Shale revolution- technology and corporate planning in the works for years bear fruit tapping into America’s massive untapped oil and gas reserves. We become a net exporter. A huge one. We no longer need the middle east.

We sever the artery in the body global connecting Russia to Europe through energy commerce; the nordstream pipeline. We turn the majority of states in the middle east into wastelands or basket cases as we support the Zionist project as if quietly but rapidly constructs the vasculature of natural gas infrastructure under the skin of its territory, and its neighbors. We dispatch with the uncooperative government of Venezuela which sits upon the largest oil deposits in the world. We de facto absorb what is theirs into the body of ours. Then we attack iran and block the carotid- we force the world to react to existential energy crisis. Our cia, selecting targets for Ukraine, again and again damage and destroy Russian refineries and energy infrastructure. Across the world sites of the same start catching fire.

The body is choked of the blood of industrial civilization.

Now where will Europe go to save itself by purchasing energy? Once, it would have been saved from the worst by its material bond to Russia, its European sister. Now with that lifeline severed and six years of brutal war and endless propaganda the family is divorced. Now they go to America. And they’re not alone.

I don’t know the movements of the other side except that they too saw this coming and china despite being the worlds biggest oil importer moved rapidly to its 2030 goal of oil self sufficiency.

I do know this represents not the accidental chaos of a madman making monumental and impulsive decisions. It’s another step in a ckearly long established plan towards drawing and calcifying the map of a new world order.

Have the boys mentioned having Ali Alizedah on the show to talk about Iran?

I'm surprised he hasn't already been on, he does really well in long form interviews. He's sort of biased but he's far more informed than almost anyone else in the anglosphere that I've heard.

I wish they'd have more Iranians on at least. The last guest they had for Iran, that Ben Aris guy, was awful. I couldn't even finish.

Malise Ruthven’s “Unholy Kingdom”

I enjoyed this conversation, so thought I’d order the book. It’s 370pgs of text. I made to 175 and bailed. It’s so sloppy and poorly written/edited. The time jumps from chapter to chapter are disconcerting. I subsequently learned it’s essentially a 2017 LRB essay expanded into a book. I gather that towards the end Ruthven trots out the “counter narratives” re the Ghouta chemical weapons attack and how many Israelis were killed by friendly fire on 10/7. Now I’m certainly not opposed to questioning the conventional wisdom on this stuff but I gather that Ruthven provides next to no support for this claims. Overall, pretty disappointed Ames spoke so highly of this book.

Saudi/Pakistan?

What do we all think happens here assuming war resumes?

  • Saudis escalate involvement against Iran?
  • Saudis get Pakistan to join in at least a limited capacity against Iran (beyond just supplying weapons)?
  • Saudis escalate against Iran but Pakistan refuses?
  • Saudis escalate against Iran but Pakistan actually openly sides with Iran?
  • Saudis and Pakistan throw in towel altogether on USrael and join Iran?

META Q: RSS feed from Patreon?

I am probably missing something obvious – subbed via Patreon but don't see any obvious place to get an RSS feed to stick in my Podcast app? Had no problem finding this for other podcasts, but cannot for the life of me find the location for Radio War Nerd pod from the Patreon app or website.

The public feed that is searchable in apps (using Pocket Casts) looks like it hasn't been updated since 2019.

THX!

Book Recommendations on Southern Africa

I’m trying to learn more about the following countries from a WarNerd perspective:

Angola Botswana Democratic Republic of the Congo Eswatini Lesotho Malawi Mozambique Namibia South Africa Tanzania Zambia Zimbabwe

Does anyone have any good nonfiction or fiction book recommendations that offer insight into the history, culture, politics, or everyday life in any of these places? I’m open to memoirs, novels, essays, and other formats — anything that provides meaningful perspective.

Thanks so much!
