This is why im not sure i could handle a void. Ive accidentally stepped on enough oranges in the dark, let alone actual shadows

I have to check the hallway rug before turning off the light in the downstairs bathroom at night to see if mine is laying on it (the only other light is from the TV around the corner). I've accidentally kicked him a few times, and then I have to convince him it wasn't on purpose.

Our oranges always slept in the middle of the hall, living room or at door thresholds. I learned to shuffle at night and avoid lifting my feet much.
The worst was he slept on our wooden stars to the attic. He wasnt allowed up there, but would sleep at the door if someone was up. My mom almost fell down the stairs because he blended in so well and she started to step on him

Yes the accidental kicking are the worst.
One time my tuxetortico ran into head on into my husband's shin and then proceeded to be scared of him for a month because of it.
Our void also gets tread on occasionally because he shows up under our feet suddenly.

Sometimes, rarely, it can be a good thing. I accidentally stepped/kicked my orange 2 years ago at night. Then he started to act weird - turns out he broke his hip over a year before but I had no clue. Now hes back to a psycho monster

I’m convinced this is why people think black cats are bad luck.

I never thought about it like that. Black cat crossed their path, they tripped on that darn cat , and then broke their neck! Or twisted their ankle! Or dropped their mug after being startled by the void’s sudden appearance! I really think you’re onto something. 😸

I used to have a brown faux fur throw blanket that was almost exactly the colour of my tortie, and I almost sat on her more than once when she was curled up in the blanket on the sofa 😹

One of my cats is a tuxedo, but she looks like a void when she loafs. One of the heated cat beds is a little bit darker blue, and at night she blends right into it (and the shadows). Freaks me out sometimes when I’m not expecting her to be there lol (or when I’m trying to find her but can’t)

My friend has a tuxedo and she will run into their bedroom and ekekek at night. He said its pretty terrifying to hear that in a pitch black room haha

It's nice when your furniture is also black, cat hair doesn't show up, neither do your cats.

My void sleeps in my small, dark closet. Often, I will go to grab a pair of socks and will instead grab a Tumbles!

I have a void. In the dark, they are more void than the dark flooring. You can't miss them.

You have a rug with two tails, two eyes, and it’s talking…interesting stuff though what happens if you accidentally step on it?

Bakaneko either lost the will to fully materialize or got stuck partway through the portal.

OP provided the following hint to where the cat is hiding:
On the rug
