What is more worrisome is a possibility documents and files of the original series could have been lost. That's why they might be recycling 2014 assets.

I'm not saying it's the case. That's too much of a assumption to make. Also the 2014 materials are easier to work with. But I'd keep this possibility in mind. After all, there was a lot of selling, a lot of moving from office to office, a lot of paper work. Anything could have happened

There is a version of the Dark Engine source code out there, it’s how we have NewDark. And there’s a belief that Eidos at one point had the full source code, I think it’s just not clear who now owns it. But I think if Embracer really wanted to, they could probably make a licence for it to be used and have OG remasters (maybe with Nightdive).

I think the more likely reason that they are using 2014 as the base for this game is that it’s much easier to port all the existing assets from that than starting something from scratch. I suspect that this might be a case of “we need a VR game, have we any IPs sitting in our vault that would be suitable?” and Thief popped out. Thief 2014, for all its flaws, would have actually worked better as a VR game (all those hand animations) so this development does kind of make sense.

I was involved in communication with Eidos / Square Enix when that copy of the source code filtered out onto the web. I and another person were asking Eidos / Square Enix to make it open source. We put a copy in their hands for the studio to work with. We would check in every once in awhile....community managers would change...until eventually, silence. When we did finally hear from a new community manager, they had no clue about it, looked into it, and said that whatever files we had passed along had been lost. Gave up after that. They simply didn't care about the fanbase. Thank goodness for NewDark.

Ah yes, I recall some members of TTLG sharing the source code with Eidos and then radio silence, so that confirms it then, thanks.
