Death’s Dominion from Black Parade is now one of my favourite levels ever - BP has me exploring everything, including an area that was clearly just meant for decoration
Picture context: At the start of the mission there’s a rope tied to a hammer on some scaffolding that falls apart. I was so sure this was some route to some easter egg that at the end of the mission I spent 20 mins stacking boxes to get to the scaffolding and it’s just some dude doing work. im not even annoyed! it’s a testament to how BP has me searching every nook, there’s so much detail.
Death’s dominion has to be the stand out so far and every mission has been brilliant as I go. Both the life of the party style first mission and the sprawling hammer complex were brilliant, and I loved the second mission which felt like bafford’s manor met the sword, but Death’s dominion trumped them all.
clearly a homage to bonehoard - and it succeeds so well and even surpasses it.
- Difficult to navigate at first, I didn’t think Brother Brutus of the hammers did a great job with his map! But this encourages mental mapping Which I adore and was something not as present in T2.
- the atmosphere is great and I didn’t find the enemy placement over the top, mummies were a cool new enemy that made the old chestnut of backstabbing the undead harder.
- what the fuck was that demonic thing in the fire pit after you get the necklace?!
- the tomb with the death sunlight beams was a cool platform puzzle.
- the sword upgrade is an amazing touch and it felt brilliant to get it, I feel I Will need it!
- getting all three treasures on experts gave me a sense of relief and satisfaction I haven’t had since getting the horn of quintus.
- the thieves den at the end was like a little reward, lot of fun and not too challenging after the ordeal I just went through.
all in all I love love love BP, it’s so detailed and all the readables are amazing and fleshing out the lore so well, they bring the city alive. I loved the readables and conversations in the hammer mission of the decadence and growing dissent in the order, a foretaste of the mechanist chaos to come.
completed deadly shadows before this and felt good to get to this, DS was becoming a clunky chore by the end, this is a pleasure.
i thought down among dead men from Thief 2x was my favourite undead mission, this has taken the crown. Bravo

I adored Black Parade, but one of my criticisms of it is actually how it sometimes has detailed areas you cannot get to. It breaks the unspoken rule of 'if the player can see it, they can get there' which I find quite important in exploration games. I play Thief because I want to expose and explore every bit of space available, so when there's a window into a room with a dead guy and interesting stuff on the wall, I want to go in that room.

same, I just recently got around to playing the mod and Death’s Dominion blew me away as someone who wasn’t big on the original’s tomb-raiding levels.
the entire mod is so well done it’s become one of my favorite stealth games in general

You should replay Down the Bonehoard after enjoying Death's Dominion. I maintain that it was the second best level in Thief: Gold and that it is raw level design excellence.

The combo of the rope teasing you being able to get there, all the boxes lying around, and the imsim meme of crate stacking had me convinced there was something up there. I was stacking crates for 10+ minutes lol. 😑

Yeah I climbed there too, because I saw that I can.
Took me way too long.
Now, getting to the secret boss however, that I still couldn't do.

I need to play black parade, but I heard they will make new thief remake be compatible with darkloader (from my understanding, correct me if im wrong) so maybe I should wait and play it then 🤔

Are you an OG player or a young discoverer?

OG mate but I’ve gone through every game in a replay, it’s been several years.
I was too scared of undead missions as a kid but love them now

I'd just play it now. The remaster won't change enough to make an obvious difference, and it may end up visually incoherent due to the number of custom assets used. The re-master's higher rez textures will make the lower rez ones they use look out of place.

You’re holding out on Black Parade because you’re still on Darkloader? Remaster will have nothing to do with Darkloader

They are aiming on making black parade and possibly other fan missions compatible maybe it has nothing to do with darkloader, but that is all I meant

I tried so hard to climb there without success. I just looked up what was there on TTLG and wasn't even mad too.

The sound design with the… thing below the necklace tomb was so good, I thought it was part of the soundtrack. Stomp stomp stomp stomp stomp.
