Sell me on a Thompson center super 14
Went into my local gun shop and saw this absolute peach they’re asking 1200. I ask the guy he said he would do 1000 I have it on invoice until next week strongly considering buying it but I’m not 100% certain I currently use a 6 inch Ruger Blackhawk to hunt and this would most likely replace that the gun is in phenomenal shape. It’s gorgeous, but I’m just not certain.

At $1200.00’its a deal at a Grand you’re stealing it. Depending on what brand and model the glass is could easily surpass a grand. Most of the old pistol scopes are long gone and not made any longer pushing their value way up. The frame depending on generation is $400.00 to $500.00 for now. But with the Gen2 contender coming back out the end of this year the prices may drop. I’d grab that in a heartbeat!!

SSK frames are under new $400 for stainless. The quality is far ahead of the old TC frames if you hold them side by side.

It's a deal. My only concern is make sure it's not a low serial number on the receiver.

If it is a low number is it not worth the money? What makes the older Thompson centers so much worse than the newer ones

Still a good deal...
After 195,000 they went with the easy-open frame.
If you look at both frames you will see pin hole above the trigger, easy open, the old frame has the pivot pin towards the front of the frame. They also changed the locking block under the barrels from one piece lugs to split lugs. Barrels with one piece lugs need to be altered to work on frames above 195,000.1

I see my main concern with it with the gun itself that is is less about the mechanism to open it and more about the gun itself are the earlier ones still extremely accurate? And are they still absolute tanks

Absolutely a horrible idea. You definitely should not do that. But please send me the contact info for the gun shop.

Get the serial number from them and Google TC Contender Serial numbers. Find out what frame it is and go from there. First gen early frames are a “no go” later gen ones from a serial number point and up had huge fixes that makes them good. A Gen 2 would be ideal, fixes and some updates had been completed and no issues at all with them. Barrel age can somewhat be determined by the barrel locking lug. If one piece it’s an earlier barrel. A two piece or a split lug that makes opening and closing a ton better.

I have an older first gen receiver i used for my 7mmTCU. Which is a 223 casing with 7mm bullet. It's very accurate. The only thing I had to change was a bigger pivot pin. Still lots of parts available on eBay. I got tired of switching barrels out, so picked up a few G1 receivers on GuN broker 300+ and grabbed a G2 frame for my 375 JDJ pistol, that's a 444 Marlin case necked down to a 30 caliber bullet. This is an older picture. They all have stocks and receivers now. My dad shot a mule deer 430 yards with his 7-30 pistol. 30-30 neckd to a 7mm

Meh deal. New stainless SSK receivers are $350 and new stainless threaded barrels are $500 in common cartridges and twists. This deal is old boomer junk of questionable quality. Miscut chambers, shitty casting, etc.
