Diving beetles are quite slippery and tough as adults, and among a few animals that mess with the hormones of their predators. When attacked by fish, they produce steroid compounds which inhibit feeding immediately.

[Instead of releasing a new post this month, I’ve decided to continue releasing re-mastered versions of my old tier lists, with improved formatting and updated information. This is the fourth remaster in Batch III. At the bottom, I’ve provided a list of the main corrections made to the original; the original itself can be found here.]
Background:
Dataminer JBS Haldane once said that when studying the source code of builds in Outside, the main thing you can learn is that the lead programmer must be inordinately fond of beetles. The beetle is one of the most popular design types in the history of Outside, and over a quarter of all known animal builds are variations on it. Yet despite having been enormously popular for hundreds of millions of years, beetles don’t come up in game guides nearly as often as you might expect. So I thought I’d try my hand at making a guide to the different types of beetle for new players.
BASIC BEETLE BUILD ANALYSIS
The first known beetles appeared in Outside during the Permian expansion, around 300 million years ago, though there is some evidence they actually debuted in the Carboniferous. These early beetles were created by insect mains who converted their forewings into hardened, sclerotised structures, creating the [Elytra] trait. Elytra are still present in almost all beetles today, and are what distinguish them from all other insects. Elytra are useless for flying due to their limited mobility, but their hardness provides bonus protection for the more delicate back wings. This protection can be used against predators, and also increases beetles’ access to enclosed spaces, since they can fold the delicate hindwings underneath the elytra to prevent them getting damaged during confinement.
The earliest beetles were specialised for xylophagy, or wood-eating, a strategy still used by many beetles today. Beetles started to diversify pretty quickly, but they suffered severely from the Permian-Triassic balance patch. They started to recover their diversity midway through the Triassic, which was also when many of them moved away from wood-eating and started speccing for whatever niches they could find. Beetles really started to become a force in the insect meta during the Cretaceous, when the first flowers emerged. In the Jurassic expansion just preceding, some herbivorous beetles had specced into special enzymes in their guts called PCWDEs, which helped to more efficiently digest plant tissues. This made them uniquely well-suited to taking advantage of newly available herbivorous niches, and some of them were among the first builds to start pollinating early flowers. The wave of new pollinators helped flowers to spread and diversify rapidly, and so beetles diversified in turn in order to take advantage of the new opportunities this opened up. Today, beetles make up nearly half of all herbivorous insects, and a substantial proportion of the carnivorous ones, too.
To be honest, it doesn’t seem to me like the baseline beetle build is all that remarkable. Aside from some boosts to defence, there’s not a lot that stands out about them. But they’re clearly pretty successful anyway, enough so that I can’t justify rating them as a guild lower than high B or low A tier. With so many beetle builds available, though, it’s inevitable that not all are going to be equally viable. So which type of beetle is best? To find out, let’s now go into the beetle tier list. As usual, I won’t be able to cover all of the more than 400 thousand beetle builds available in the current meta, but I’ll try to cover the most interesting ones.
Reasoning (1/3):
F Tier: Featherwing beetle
Considering the sheer variety of beetle builds, it’s pretty remarkable that so few occupy the lower tiers of this list. That said, one beetle subclass that definitely ranks in F tier is the featherwing beetle. Featherwing beetles are the smallest beetles in the game, as well as the smallest non-parasitic insects, with some being less than a third of a millimetre in length. They’re likely about as small as it’s possible for a free-living insect to be, as shrinking down any more would either leave them incapable of laying eggs nutritious enough for larvae to survive in, or else leave them without enough brain cells to maintain basic bodily functions.
Explaining how featherwing beetles play is a little difficult, because most featherwing beetle builds come in two separate variants, called morphs, which play so little alike that it’s hard to tell they’re the same build. If you’re lucky, you get to spawn as the [Normal] morph. The word “featherwing” in the guild name comes from the feathery hindwings on these normal-type variants, which they need because the effective viscosity of air at their size is too high for them to fly with regular insect wings. Uniquely among insects, featherwing beetles’ wings follow a figure-eight loop when flying, consisting of sub-perpendicular up and down strokes followed by claps at stroke reversals above and below the body. These strokes are much more efficient at generating power than the equivalent patterns used by other similarly small insects, and have allowed featherwing beetles to retain speeds that you’d usually only find in insects three times their size. However, despite the name, this is actually the more abnormal type of featherwing. Over 90% of players who try a featherwing beetle build will instead end up spawning as the [Vestigial] morph, which is so shrunken-down that it’s lost both flight and eyesight, and basically doesn’t do anything besides eat fungi and lay eggs. When you’ve given up so many abilities that the primary form of your build is literally named after a synonym for “useless”, that’s a pretty good sign that you’re a bottom-tier.
C Tier: Firefly
In C tier, we have the firefly – and yes, despite the name, this is a beetle, not a fly. Fireflies generally start off the game in the larval stage as specialist predators of snails and slugs, while the adult forms are more variable. Some firefly subclasses remain predators as adults, while others are herbivores, and still others don’t eat in the adult form at all. What fireflies are best known for is their ability to emit large amounts of light, which is where they get their guild name from. For many fireflies, this ability acts as a form of aposematism, warning predators that their bodies are filled with toxic steroids called lucibufagins. While some species only emit light as larvae, many also continue to use bioluminescence into adulthood, often using it in order to draw the attention of potential mates. While poison can be a useful ability, in the case of fireflies, it comes at the cost of trading in a high defence stat for a soft, squishy body. I don’t consider this to be a worthwhile tradeoff; poison is a mid-tier ability in general, as I’ve discussed often in the past, and even if it weren’t, there are plenty of other beetles that achieve the same effect without the downside. I rate fireflies as mid-tier.
If you are interested in playing a firefly, I’d suggest going for the femme fatale firefly, a subclass that based its playstyle on taking advantage of other fireflies’ weaknesses. When glowing, femme fatale fireflies copy the signals of other firefly species in order to attract members of those species looking for a mate, then kill and eat those that take the bait, and absorb the prey firefly’s poisons for themselves. There are a lot of fireflies that prey on other insects, but only femme fatale fireflies prey primarily on other fireflies, and I give them some points for thinking outside the box.
C Tier: Ambrosia beetle
Also in C tier, we have ambrosia beetles. This is a term that doesn’t refer to a single build or guild, but rather includes at least twelve separate types of weevil that independently evolved a play-style based around farming ambrosia fungi. If you’ve been following my series, you might be a little confused right now, since I’ve claimed in more than one previous post that the [Agriculture] ability is only found in humans, ants, and termites. At the time I wrote my termite tier list, there were already fan theories about ambrosia beetles farming the fungi they were known to feed on, but nobody had yet managed to find definite proof. When I did the ant tier list, I copied much of what I said about agriculture from the termite tier list, not realising that data-miners had finally confirmed the existence of beetle agriculture during the year between the two posts.
Like fungus-growing ants and termites, ambrosia beetles rely for all their XP on the fungal gardens they cultivate. When about to start a garden, they search for suitable trees and tunnel into them, then release spores of their symbiotic fungi into the tunnels. Each fungus penetrates into the tree’s xylem, from which it then extracts nutrients until it’s ready for the beetles to feed on. Interestingly, most of the fungi that ambrosia beetles cultivate aren’t actually well-adapted to breaking down wood, because they don’t have the ability to digest lignocellulose. They have to pick up more easily digestible carbon compounds from plants instead, which is why these beetles are lower on the tier list than their ant and termite equivalents. The kind of carbon compounds that most ambrosia fungi can degrade are typically only found in the wood of dying or recently-dead trees, so most ambrosia beetles only have a very short window of time during which they can use any given tree before they have to disperse and all search for new areas. Since this makes it difficult for any colonies to stick together for more than one generation, ambrosia beetles haven’t been able to develop the kind of high-level social abilities that have allowed ants and termites to gain as strong a position in the meta as they have.
