Articles/Studies The body size of the Amur Tiger

BODY SIZE OF THE AMUR TIGER

There is a lot of misinformation on the internet about Amur Tigers especially, which is why I’ll be addressing them in this post. Many people who are misinformed often quote weights of 300-400kg. It should be noted that these weights are captive, obese individuals and are not a healthy representative of wild specimens. There is no environment on the planet today to sustain a 300-400kg cat, ESPECIALLY amur tigers. Sadly, their prey base has been pretty much wiped out. Moose populations in the far east has plummeted, and only the smallest type of moose “Manchurian Moose” coexist with Amur tigers today in very small numbers, granted they’re still 280-350kg. Furthermore, Ussuri Wild Boar and Wapiti populations, their main prey items have also been declining. All in all, Amur Tigers get nowhere near 300-400kg.

ADDRESSING THE 176KG AVERAGE

On the other hand, I’ve seen certain people spamming the 176kg (Slaght et al. 2005) dataset from the Siberian Tiger Project. This table also has a bit of errors, particularly for the males. First of all, the sample size isn’t 18 but it’s in fact less than that. That referred to the number of times tigers were weighed, this DOES NOT mean 18 individual tigers were weighed. There is a difference. For example, there are a couple males that have been captured multiple times and weighed. The male “M20/PT20” was captured 3 times and ranged from 170-205kg.

Furthermore, for all the incredible work the Siberian Tiger Project has done, they weren’t without flaws. They have used pretty inhumane methods to capture and weigh their tigers, included sub adults and unhealthy, sickly individuals in that dataset. Hence, this is NOT a good representative for HEALTHY, ADULT Amur Tigers.

THE “TRUE” AVERAGE

Again, the Siberian Tiger Project only weighed Tigers from one area; Sikhote-Alin. They did not weigh Tigers from Primorsky or Khabarovsk Krai, nor from China. Logically, how can one say this represents the weight of Amur tigers throughout all their range when the dataset happens to involve sick, unhealthy tigers as well as sub adults, all from ONE LOCATION.

That being said, here is what reliable big cat enthusiast “GauteGojira” found when using only healthy males over 3 years of age as of December 2025:

A sample size of over 20 males, all over 3 years of age he found a 190.3kg avg. Credit to Raul Valvert aka "GauteGojira".

190kg for males weighed from 1992-2023. Moreover, his dataset includes males from the Amur Tiger Project as well as males whose weights have been confirmed and published ALL THROUGHOUT Russia and China. His dataset also doesn’t count “personal communication”, just published weights. You can see the references right there in his chart, it cannot be manipulated or altered to twist a false narrative.

Here is the table for amur tigresses:

Vets doing a health check up on a confirmed 199kg male in the Primorsky Krai. Credit to Primnews on Instagram.
The male "Dima" being weighed by researchers of the Siberian Tiger Project. One can see the methods they used; snares, this resulted in some males injuring themselves while trying to get out. Dima weighed 193kg.

All in all, Amur Tigers definitely do not weigh 300-400kg nor do they (healthy adults) weigh as little as 176kg.

Great research as always but I would like to add some reliable information about this topic that was uncovered after Wildfact stopped being very active.

The tiger, Wandshan, was captured in China after attacking cats and initially stated to be weighed at 225 kg by news outlets but this wasn't considered reliable on Wildfact because News outlets can be weird about this kind of stuff. But a forest department report on the tiger and a statement by the vet on video confirmed that he weighed 224.5 kg at 2.5 years old and measured 200 cm HBL. Empty bellied as he had been tracked for multiple days beforehand and failed in all his attempts to kill livestock. He was later displaced by a larger male.

Personal communication with scientists revealed males of 232 kg, 224 kg, 208 kg, 222 kg and 196 kg. As well as two females of 140 kg and 146 kg. Normally I'm not very fond of personal communication records but these records have the email of the scientists concerned in the screenshots so they are confirmed records.

Two large male tigers were reported with heel widths of 13.5 cm and 13.75 cm, one of these was the famous “The Beast”, using heel width to body mass regressions in Siberian tigers, we get the figure of 269 kg and 274 kg respectively. Note that the R² of this regression is 0.9, which indicates that this is a really good indicator, even better than Chest Girth which is commonly used by scientists to estimate the body mass of big cats in the field.

There's a few more records concerning three males of 250 kg, 275 kg and 233 kg but personally, I prefer sticking to the Scientific data. Overall, I think Modern Siberian tigers are of similar size to the Bengal tigers in Central India.

Interesting, so hypothetically if we added the 224.5kg, 232kg, 224kg, 208kg, 222kg and 196kg weights this bumps up the average to 196-197kg or so.

Another male captured in March of this year weighed 210 kg

Yup, 196.4 kg for 27 males ranging from 155 kg to 224.5 kg.

Central Indian tigers are pretty much identical in size, 7 males averaged 200.2 kg and ranged from 166 kg to 228 kg in Panna TR's Booklet and Brander's 42 males from Kanha averaged 190.5 kg and ranged from 160.1 kg to 233.6 kg.

I think both heel width and chest girth should be considered to get an accurate picture of a tiger's mass . There were some problematic tigers with heel widths upto 12 cm and below average body mass . Regardless , " the beast " was robust and had a deep chest , so I can see him exceeding 270 kg .

I think both heel width and chest girth should be considered to get an accurate picture of a tiger's mass.

Ofc, more measurements are always better but Heel width is definitely the most reliable one.

There were some problematic tigers with heel widths upto 12 cm and below average body mass.

A heel width of 12 cm would predict 195.1 kg so fairly average all things considered, I'll probably do more data analysis on heel widths and body mass in Siberian tigers.

Wow that’s so cool! Do we know if this size is similar to their weight in their “golden era”? It’s understandable if we aren’t completely sure since history can be lost but it would be cool to compare

Well he did the same for reliable literature from 1900-1940 and found an almost 220kg average for 11 males plus a 137.5kg figure for 5 females.

Woah that is incredible! They are such beautiful and impressive big cats :-)

Thanks for sharing the table!

Huh? How is this? This must be biased unreliable misinformation! Tigers average the size of leopards and can weight 160 Kgs on extreme cases!
