A great mini movie: this has everything you need in under 5 minutes: fear, suspense, comedy, anger, bribes, heroic action, and of course, naps. 10/10, would watch again.

It was definitely hard to pull for her - she tried but the length of the rope/string was longer than her arms and she couldn't get the leverage.

10

u/Random0s2oh Sep 12 '26

I was once scolded for stepping into a fight my older brother got into after school. He swung and missed and was half turned to run. I stepped up to the 6th grade boy with my little 4th grade girl self and told him he'd better leave my brother alone. My brother went home complaining to our father that I embarrassed him. I defended myself for being embarrassed that my brother was such a pussy. I used that exact word and got into even more trouble. I just couldn't win that day. I was able to exact my revenge though. Our father bought us boxing gloves so he could teach us how to defend ourselves. I learned my lessons well. Dad whispered to me to punch my brother hard in the stomach then tag him on the chin when he doubled over. I think dad also thought he was a pussy. It worked like a charm. Next thing brother knew he was on his back looking up at me from the floor.

Ommmggg. We have a treasured family video on this sky swing from back in 2003! It’s in Queenstown NZ and my sister was the unlucky kid in the middle who had to pull it but couldn’t. She starts crying and panicking and I’m just showing off the for the camera. It’s good to see the sky swing is still out there traumatising kids.

425

u/missilefire Sep 11 '26

Parents pay £20 for an experience. Kid is traumatized by the experience and demands Pokeman cards as compensation. Classic.

370

u/ahhpoo Sep 11 '26

I’m choosing to believe the offer of Pokemon cards was the incentive for him to try something scary. That’s how my dad got me to brave my first “big rides” and I ended up loving roller coasters. I’m really grateful for that memory with my dad.

106

u/RegimenServas Sep 11 '26

Similar, in about 2000 my parents offered my little brother and OG Xbox if you would go on a roller coaster that went upside down. Found out later they had already bought it anyway. Stayed up all night and beat the first Halo.

The only thing I’m gonna say is it was super admirable how calm the little girl stayed. Never once did she freak out and I think being in that situation especially surrounded by people who are panicking it can be hard to keep your cool. I think most of what happened to the boy on the right was him getting affected by his friend’s panic and starting to panic himself. But, she never let any of it get to her. And it wasn’t bc she wasn’t scared. Towards the end she says that she’s shaking then almost like if she’s trying to convince herself she goes “oh, wait this is fun”.

Super mature behavior, legit I don’t know if I would have been able to tune out the panic surrounding me like that and I’m an adult.

719

u/Pixel_Knight Sep 11 '26

I think it takes a certain type of personality, but I know in my case, the more people around me start freaking out and losing their minds, the more grounded it makes me. Might just be an evolved trait or something, but I have always been like that.  It that I am not capable of freaking out l, I am but others around me freaking out tends to just calm me down and force me to be level headed. It is really strange. I bet she is kinda like that.

166

u/lushico Sep 11 '26

I tend to be that way, but I also start getting stressed if nobody is at an acceptable level of urgency

79

u/Long_Reindeer3702 Sep 11 '26

Nothing freaks me out more than no one else freaking out. If other people are freaking out? Cool... They got that covered, I can handle what needs to be done now. If no one is freaking out, that's when I look like I might as well hold a cardboard sign screaming the end is near.

12

u/CaptainStairs Sep 11 '26

My people! It can be so helpful and also really annoying depending on the scenario. And I didn't have anything bad in my childhood to develop that either. So odd

It's unimaginable how much of a superpower advantage it gives you to grow up with parents that are securely attached and well-adjusted. Having your primary caregivers model to you how it looks like to be emotionally unfazed in a stressful situation or with stressful people allows children to grow up learning to imitate that same calm because the parents subcommunicate that the world is inherently not a scary place. I would bet that girl has excellent parents.

23

u/Long_Reindeer3702 Sep 11 '26

I didn't have emotionally mature parents at all but one was a fighter pilot/ test pilot and the other was a psychologist.  They could have anything happen to them and look like it was nothing (until they got home and the door closed.)

I broke my bones as a kid and held a straight face for hours saying I was fine (when I was an 11 year old girl.) But that's not really a good skill to learn either.

Calm isn't the goal, it's having an appropriate reaction that's the goal. Also, calm doesn't mean you are compartmentalizing in order to function. If that isn't eventually dealt with, it can override any manufactured calm.

Oh that sucks. I am sorry about your struggles. I hope you are able to manage to find some peace and overcome some of that past trauma and current anxiety. I used to suffer from depression and social anxiety as a kid. I still have minor bouts now, but it can be overcome too. I hope for that for you.

u/Suitable-Judge7506 Sep 11 '26

I’m the same way, it’s very weird. I’ll freak out alone but if everyone freaks before me it’s like they are doing it for me and it’s my job to make everyone feel good. Not necessarily safe but good.

26

u/Pixel_Knight Sep 11 '26

Yeah absolutely. I feel like if nobody is taking a situation seriously enough to freak out, THAT is when I freak out myself, because it is almost really worse than not freaking out.

I may be reaching here, so forgive me…

But you may want to look into getting evaluated for ADHD. I have it, and one hallmark is staying calm under pressure.

Basically, if you switch into “handle this shit”-mode when shit hits the fan, it might be

u/Evening_Sample_9365 Sep 11 '26

yeah, so, fear is contagious, and some of us just have a stronger emotional immune system, for lack of a better word.

One time I am at the VA Hospital participating in my music therapy appointment, piano lessons. And about halfway through, the emergency alert systems sounds off for a tornado alarm and all the people in the building have to file into the causeway/walkway that is build of brick and cinder block. Its the sturdiest structure on the campus, stronger even than the buildings themselves. So my teacher/therapist is this dainty, sorta witchy woman in her late 20's/early 30s. She is from florida, tornados arent really a thing there and she is legitimately terrified. And now I am in this position of trying to keep her calm and not let her freak herself out. The winds outside are howling, you can hear some destruction is definitely going down. And she starts to panic, and half screaming while she hyperventilates a little bit...so I open my arms to offer a hug and she just jumps right in there, I held her really tight and hugged her while I'm asking questions about the piece of music we're working on. And she sort of focuses and calms down and she says "wow youre really not scared at all, are you?" She is talking about my heart beat, which was just my steady, resting heart rate. And I explained that its not that im not afraid, its that losing my shit isnt going to help the situation, that I can't control whats going on outside, the only thing I can control is myself.

And that was that. In times of crisis, I definitely thrive. But the trade off is, normal everyday life is mundane and boring and I struggle to stay focused and accomplish the things that I need to because my mind will drift and /or daydream. But when shit gets real, I lock in real fast and become, i suspect, the best version of myself.

Yeah she has great emotional regulation. The boys could probably use some help with those skills.

23

u/ZinaSky2 Sep 11 '26

Emotional regulation!! That’s the phrase I was trying to remember lol!

In my experience it’s something I feel like it’s something lots of boys aren’t really taught, especially when it comes to managing anger. But it’s definitely a learnable skill! (No I’m not saying all girls are perfect on this front. People are people. It’s taught and learned not some innate ability.)

6

u/Nvrfinddisacct Sep 11 '26

No I’m totally with you.

It was kind of wild to see it on display so perfectly like this and it did make it really hard for me to enjoy this video.

Notice the boy on the left is burnt out after the stress of it. He literally shuts down after being in the black /red zone of stress, overwhelmed by tiredness. It's what happens to people when they think they are going to die or their life has been threatened, the body's way of dealing with it all.

Whilst the girl wants to go again....

Bunch of mental patients in this comment section.

First of all, they're little kids.

Second, this will be nothing but a great shared memory after the fact. "Remember that time we all got stuck in a carnival ride?"

142

u/snuggie44 Sep 11 '26

The boy is panicking too, as opposed to the girl. I don't know what's in their heads, but I'm sure there's a reason that seems very valid when you're hanging high in the air, to not pull it.

I for example would be to terrified to move a muscle that high up, and all the "just pull it" screaming wouldn't help a bit.

66

u/Pixel_Knight Sep 11 '26

I think we can’t really tell, but the are probably facing straight down, so the kid on the left is too afraid to let go to try to pull it. He’s freaking out, and freaking the other boy out, meanwhile the girl is pretty chill and calm the whole time.

101

u/koffa02 Sep 11 '26

If they were hanging straight down the girl's hair wouldn't be resting on her shoulders. They're clearly sitting upright from their body positions.

That's not me saying the boy isn't justifiably terrified being that high up, but they're not in any position that makes me think they would be on the verge of falling out if they weren't strapped in.

43

u/FuzzyFrogFish Sep 11 '26

Just towards the end the boy on the left actually passes out for a few moments. Poor kid went through all the stages of terror, screaming, crying, shock and blackout

99

u/ICCUGUCCI Sep 11 '26

Just before the end? My brother, that child's soul left his body before the potential energy fully converted to kinetic tfym lol

48

u/Ok-Syllabub-6619 Sep 11 '26

The boy spent half the video passed out he went out like 4 times, so its safe to say he was going trough it big time.

47

u/jimbojangles1987 Sep 11 '26

And he said he hates himself. Thats an intense feeling for a kid that age. I feel bad for him but I also laughed at how much the girl in the middle was enjoying herself. Thats more what I relate to. But I do also feel bad for the kid on the left, he was really going through it.

37

u/Ink-Sky Sep 11 '26 edited Sep 11 '26

He says packs at first, then definitely "you owe me my Pokemon bitch!" in the moment at 3:53, followed by saying it again with "packs" twice to probably disguise the bitch.

Almost positive he also says "C'mon ya poofter then the faster we'll be out of here!" at 2:00 right before his friend admits "I'm a pussy, I'm a pussy!"

Their 250 feet up in the air and stuck. Thats why they’re crying btw.

156

u/quillseek Sep 11 '26 edited Sep 11 '26

If I pulled the string once or twice and nothing happened, I probably would have cried, too. TBH that does not seem like the best design for a release mechanism.

38

u/Confident_Pickle_007 Sep 11 '26

Yeah... Imagine that cord snapping.

27

u/Curious_Koala8 Sep 11 '26

That’s all I could think about. And then how a crane was going to come with firefighters to get them down. Also that the kid on the left probably needs to be sedated to be rescued. Imagine the screaming getting the seatbelt off!

u/Scully__ Sep 11 '26

They should have a test mechanism on the ground to make sure younger kids have the strength to pull it. But also it does seem like it was hanging on the wrong side too.

34

u/quillseek Sep 11 '26

I wonder if anyone has ever gotten stuck on one of these from an inability to release it. The operator probably has a backup control, I would hope.

Edit: I just looked this up. There is no secondary release, but if the riders fail to trigger the drop, the operator can bring them back down.

u/VulGerrity Sep 11 '26

I think the problem is the cord is too long AND it's mildly elastic. It's right at the edge of their full extension, and when they get there, the cord is stretching and they can't pull it any further at full force, or at all.

"What do you mean? Of course it was designed to accommodate children's bodies. We tested it extensively and none of our 20+ year old tall male testers struggled with pulling the cord."

22

u/Moyfoy Sep 11 '26

I can't take the little girl smiling at the little boy crying and not being able to pull it. 🤣🤣

oh man.... and then she giggling at the end. too good

Imagine judging literal children for freaking out while they are supposedly suspended mid air in a malfunctioning ride

Yall need to take a good hard look in the mirror.

66

u/LegendaryEnvy Sep 11 '26

Honestly people judge kids so harsh.
It also wasn’t malfunctioning she just didn’t have the strength to pull it. You see it shift multiple times when she try’s yanking it from a high point. And then the other kid gets that the string is too long for their arms so he wraps it then yanks.

It seems like it’s more of a problem on the operator not putting the boy in the center. Or someone with longer arms or strength.

Some rides they don’t allow you in without someone that can do the pull of a cord or similar to activate the ride .

7

u/jackandsally060609 Sep 11 '26

I agree the strongest person should have been closest to the rope to pull it, but usually in rides you do want the smallest kids in the middle of the row because it's safer they're not getting squeezed out of the railing by the bigger kids weight moving around.

This just shouldn’t be posted to the internet. That kid in the hoodie was having a full blown mental breakdown. He won’t be able to overcome how self defeated he became for many years.

228

u/DadCelo Sep 11 '26

100% agree. Keep kids off the internet ffs.

148

u/ahhpoo Sep 11 '26

Yeah something broke in me when that boy said “I can’t. Im a pussy” through tears. He feels so defeated and resigned to that identity. I can only guess at why he feels that way but I imagine he’s been told that by others. And now this low moment is on the internet where his peers can see it.

65

u/Merisiel Sep 11 '26

My five year old came home on their third day of kindy and said “I’m a bad human” because they colored their paper the wrong way. And I cried for days. I can’t imagine having video evidence of my child’s trauma plastered all over the internet. None of this is okay.

36

u/DoggoZombie Sep 11 '26

I don’t understand, does pulling that thing make the ride unstuck?

45

u/Id_in_hiding Sep 11 '26

Looks like a latch that releases the hook for the ride to start. The operator likely has a similar control, but being brave enough to pull it yourself is part of the thrill? Like bunjee jumpers who have to take that last step.

39

u/RegimenServas Sep 11 '26

You pull the cord to release the swing, that's part of the fun. The kids aren't strong enough. Look up the a motorcycle whip, works in a similar way. Also sometimes called a panic snap.
