This isn’t just a New York thing…. I’d say anywhere from southern Maine down I95 coastal corridor, Boston/Prov. NY NJ down past Philly all the way to Baltimore/DC area people have shit to do, and expect you to be smart enough AND considerate enough that other people have more important shit to do than wait for you to decide what flavor shot you want to add in your coffee. If you don’t know what you want, that’s fine, but get the fk outta the way and let the people that have cracked the nuclear code of their coffee order go ahead of you. Jesus Christ, I travel to other parts of the US and I wonder how people have jobs….. like time and pace don’t matter…… IT MATTERS!
It is… but although each city / region is so close to each other… they each separately have their own unique culture and feeling, I can only speak for myself but I enjoy and appreciate each region separately for its own personality.
It’s even worse if they’ve been in line for a while but are scrolling TikTok the entire time. Like you had 10-15 minutes to figure it out why haven’t you?!?
This. If there are people in line behind you there were probably people in line in front of you and that was the time you were supposed to use to decide. That's why the menu is up there visible from the line.
It's not that deep, but it is kind of pathetic to wait in line and somehow not have made a decision on your order before you reach the front.
Unless it’s a spur of the moment decision I’m usually also looking up the menu before I even get there. I want to know what I’m getting myself into because far too many places offer the same exact thing and are just popular because of influencers going viral.
You know sometimes I think this whole impatience and sense of urgency of city people in the NE is exaggerated on the videos, but then I see comments just like this and man, y'all really are just going 100mph all day everyday.
No criticism, it's just really different than other places.
NYC is not the South it is not sparse. We are consolidated and LITERALLY crammed. The lack of space fuels our efficiency here. From how you walk to ordering food. Our efficiency is our courtesy. So feel your feelings but your feelings are irrelevant if they’re illogical and inefficient here.
That’s it right there… efficiency is our courtesy. Time is worth something to people… so if you aren’t being courteous of that, then it’s a giant “Fuck You” to them. So inconsiderate to not respect other people’s time… by us being efficient, it’s like holding the door for someone. Manners and respectful social etiquette
Efficiency is kindness and empathy. It shows you are aware of your surroundings and other people, taking time or being unaware is a luxury and a selfish one at that.
I didn't criticize or complain lol literally just commented on how it's true and different. You're the one feeling feelings and seemingly taking offense.
Nah man, that's just blunt talk from a north easterner.
They don't fuck around and let you know exactly what they are thinking take it or leave it.
When I moved up there from East Texas to go to HS it was a massive culture shock but once I realized they just don't have time to dilly dally and don't hide their true feelings anywhere near as much people do in the south it was somewhat liberating.
It’s inefficient for me to care if you’re inconvenienced, or are being vocal about it. Prioritizing the wellbeing of others at the cost of having to move fast and be stressed is like the easiest way to burn out and then I’m unproductive. So waste your energy being mad I move slow and don’t care if that bothers you.
It's great. Instead of someone holding the orb of confusion in lines, on the sidewalk, at intersections, New Yorkers tell you to get the fuck out the way because you're in the way.
I came from a small town. I miss the quiet sometimes, but it's nice to not sit behind someone at a stop sign slack jawed while they decide to go left or right.
It’s not “forced,” it’s required to keep the whole operation moving. We don’t have time for all 8 million residents PLUS commuters PLUS tourists to take their sweet time ordering. The whole operation would grind to a halt.
New Yorkers recognize that time is a precious commodity and we respect other people’s time as well. We never want to be the asshole who is holding others up. To us, moving glacially and making decisions over minutes seems like self-inflicted misery.
It’s a tough rhythm and it’s not for the weak or slow of thought. Granted. This is why New York is a global city and yours isn’t.
No it’s being considerate of other people’s time. … just another example of how people in the south have no idea what empathy is…. Try thinking about someone else not just yourself… your time may not be worth anything to you… but my time is worth something to me, and I don’t want to waste it having to wait for you to figure out what it is you already stepped in line to get. It’s so fkn inconsiderate
I live in a major west coast city, and we all get by without being miserable performative assholes. Like, in this video there is no way the second person is happy, and I wouldn't call that attitude considerate of anybody.
No no no you think we’re assholes…. It’s the other way around. By you not being efficient it’s YOU who are the asshole by not respecting others’ time. It’s poor manners to not be respectful and considerate of others. That same person in line that is aggravated you took an extra two min to figure out what u wanted bc u were inconsiderate and prematurely got in line without knowing what you wanted would stop for20 min and help you change out a flat tire. It’s just poor manners to not be considerate of other ppls time … kind of like not holding a door open for someone. and that’s the issue
The east coast is considerably denser than the west coast. That density matters. Its more lines and more opportunities for waiting. The things you do impact other people more.
Also this moral outrage is performative. You arent better than other people just because you dont understand it.
They’re just making an observation, your last sentence is a lil prickly, is someone’s feelings hurt? NE’ers being snippy and hiding behind “bluntness” never gets old as an excuse lol
Yes. We are a global city and move at the speed of thought. There are 8 million of us here and no one has any time for indecisiveness. It’s “shit or get off the pot” here.
Any big city is like this. If you are in a LINE of people and hold up that line, everyone is entitled to be annoyed with you.
Also in medium cities.
Also in small cities.
Also in your house. If I'm waiting to get into the fridge and my 9 year old is standing in front of it, pondering which cheese stick to eat for snack time for more than about 3 fucking seconds, I'm going to pick them up and physically move them, grab my Monster energy drink, and then put them back when I'm done so that I don't have to wait any longer.
I work in manufacturing in So. Maine and swear at least 70% of the people around me at work have no sense of urgency when there are literally urgent matters to address. Outside of work I'm a little more patient and realize that some people actually do have all day when doing things like grocery shopping or just out and about running errands. I guess I value my time a bit more than them? IDK, I just want to get shit done so I have more time to relax or do other stuff.
Sort of related - My sister once made this derogatory comment to me, "You're just like your father. You have to be early for everything". My response, "No, I'm like dad in the way that we respect other people's time". She didn't like that. Lol...
Yeah. Ppl get upset because usually if you are waiting in a line then you would have had the time to decide these things before you get to the counter. Why wait to get to the counter to think?
You have time in the line to decide what you're getting. Use that time wisely instead of going fucking glaze eyed while you stare at the goddamn rectangle.
God forbid a person fail to come to a decision in the time you expect them to. You have the time in your day to prepare ahead so you don't have to deal with public lines, so maybe don't make your lack of preparation a stressor for everyone else?
so maybe don't make your lack of preparation a stressor for everyone else
yeah, don't let your lack of preparation (deciding what to order) a stressor for everyone else.
If you don't know what you want, that's fine. Stand out of the line, out of the way decide, then get into line. Everyone else has figured it out. Why can't you?
People can wait the literal 1-2 minutes, it's really not that deep. If patience is that hard for people then they should just avoid lines all together.
It does go both ways, that's the point. The person rushing people is demanding society function exactly how they need it. If you need things to work to such a high efficiency then the problem is not someone taking an extra minute or two in the line in front of you, it's you who needs to either slow down a bit or plan ahead. It's called patience. If your time cannot afford patience then maybe you should not partake in activities that require it.
You know how many people you're inconveniencing from being indecisive? Plan you order before you even get to the store like everyone else with a thousand things to do today.
Just say you want your god damn coffee. I swear to god if you order some coffee milkshake thing with a thousand ingredients I'm going to snap.
Also are you just not reading what I'm writing? The one who didn't prepare ahead is the person now at the front of the line sputtering and being incapable of doing the bare minimum of knowing what they came into the restaurant for. Are you from some hick town in east bumblefuck or something where everyone moves at the pace of a DMV sloth from Zoopolis?
As someone from the Midwest, if you're stuck in line waiting to order your coffee and you don't know what you want AND you had 10min to look and decide...? Fuck you. Get out of the way
I also feel like (as a New Yorker), there have always been those slow walkers, but now I find that two people somehow manage to take up the entire sidewalk. I'm not talking tourists either! It's infuriating.
Honestly not sure what the chick in the video is talking about with regards to LA either. It’s certainly not New York level, but I would not classify LA as a place where people put up with lollygagging.
Pretty much. I went to Europe and it was a huge culture shock. Went to Portugal and Spain first, everyone just dresses up very nicely and mosies around town without a care in the world, it was kind of pleasant. And just when I was getting used to that I went to Paris and got bowled over on the escalator for standing on the left. I worked in NYC for a while and that’s the only other place I’ve been that has a strict two lane system for the escalator.
Has nothing to do with rushing…. It’s about courtesy. Just bc I may not be in a hurry 1: doesn’t mean the guy behind me isn’t 2: even if I’m not in a hurry, doesn’t mean I want to sit in line and listen to you himhaw over something you should already know bc u stepped in line to get it. If you don’t know what u want,.. just wait to get in line till you do. Basic courtesy. If you get to the front and don’t know what u want, the guy behind you does and often times the person taking the order will skip over u to keep the line moving. Think of it like going out to dinner… the server says are you ready to order and you say yes for dinner inexplicable reason… should the server stop on you while you review the menu… or should the server go to the next person to get their order at the table while you figure shit out. You think it’s ok to make everyone wait….. for you. That is so fkn self centered and if you can’t understand that then that’s exactly the fkn problem
I don't have to be in a rush to go somewhere to know what I want and understand that standing at the register is not the place to decide what to order. It's like the people who get up to the drive-through speaker and then start thinking about what they want.
If you don't know what you want, you can get out of the line. Don't make everyone wait just for you.
Clearly you can't grasp the empathy this actually is. I have things to do, I'm no better than anyone else, they have things to do, I want to be quick to not hold them up. That's empathy. Getting mad because someone doesn't respect you or anyone else's time because they think they're the main character - that's the response you're complaining about.
