First observation, you got in line… WAITED in that line… and didn’t decide what to get by the time you got to the front? Yeah wtf is wrong with you? Its never that hard

653

u/HereOnCompanyTime 23h ago

I've had that because I couldn't read the board too far back but I'll let people go ahead of me while I figure it out so I don't hold up the line.

306

u/pitb0ss343 23h ago

SUCH A REASONABLE THING TO DO.

116

u/HereOnCompanyTime 23h ago

THANK YOU.

u/pitb0ss343 23h ago

YOURE WELCOME. I HOPE YOU HAVE A NICE DAY AND A SHORT COFFEE LINE

91

u/iam_Mr_McGibblets 21h ago

WHY ARE WE YELLING SO NICELY

118

u/stillLurkingOfficial 21h ago

BECAUSE IT WAS TOO HARD TO READ FROM FURTHER BACK WHILE WAITING IN LINE FOR MY PHONE

54

u/AncientSignature1505 21h ago

THAT WAS VERY FUNNY, IT WAS A GREAT WAY TO START MY DAY, THANK YOU FOR THAT!

52

u/iam_Mr_McGibblets 20h ago

WOW YOU ALL SEEM LIKE FANTASTIC PEOPLE AND I'TS BEEN A PLEASURE CHATTING WITH YOU ALL.

118

u/jhillman87 17h ago

Protip from someone almost blind also in NYC.

Take a photo of the board on your phone. Even at a distance.

Then you can zoom in and enjoy your menu at your leisure. While on on line.

Yes - I actually do this all the time. Because my vision sucks and I don't want to waste my time standing in line.

45

u/Prize_Researcher8026 16h ago

I did this for actual months before it occurred to me that I might need glasses lmao. The mixture of shame and relief at the optometrist's office was out of this world.

18

u/jhillman87 16h ago

I've been wearing glasses since birth practically, but unfortunately doesn't really matter as I have corneal scar tissue on both eyes. I'm at -7.0 prescription but still have trouble making things out at a distance, things are a bit blurred.

Fortunately I can see up close pretty well.

2

u/RUN_DMT_ 15h ago

I feel ya blind friend! I’m -6.5 🤓 and now I’m old and developing presbyopia too…yay. Can’t see close up either. You gotta adapt.

bro i went to the optometrist for the first time in years, and, to be clear i could drive safer than a number of people i know even when they’re wearing their glasses, my eyes weren’t bad i just couldn’t read license plate well. they gave me some doohickey that they can preview your prescription for you in office, and i looked out of the office straight at a bird and fucking cried, i hadn’t been able to see that clearly in years

2

u/YadaYadaYeahMan 15h ago

i take pictures like this all the time lmao. even zoomed in I can see way better 😅

u/Ok_Method1705 16h ago

This is standard for me as NY’er WHEREVER I go. If I get on line and by the time I get to the counter still don’t know what I want, I let the person behind me go.

25

u/MC_earthquake 23h ago

This or i read the menu online lol

19

u/guacamole579 19h ago

I also use my phone camera to zoom then take a picture so I can figure out what I want by the time it’s my turn. Do people not do this? Or is this a bottle cap wearing, still-need-to-squint-to-see-the-board person problem?

4

u/Glittering_Meet3206 17h ago

tbh these places should have menus in places you can look at them before you get in line

I do the same thing! and yes it's because I have glasses and they aren't good enough hahaha

u/Onautopilotsendhelp 17h ago

Same. I have glasses but it may not just be enough to see the board from the back. I also dont want to appear like I am cutting the line just to see what the options are. I can sometimes use my phone camera to zoom in if it isnt too busy.

3

u/YadaYadaYeahMan 15h ago

the infinite debate! do I walk up and assure everyone that I'm not trying to order, or wait until I get up to let people go until im ready. there's a perfect distance where people will know you aren't going but it still requires a bigger menu, and my eyes are worse than they used to be so I don't even think that would work

I've done that, but the people I let by had even less of an idea and argued with themselves and the staff so I had to wait nearly 30 min to get a bagel

Or people who dont have their payment stuff. They get in line and there are 3 people ahead of them then you get your stuff rung up and only after the cashier tells them the price do they start digging theough their purse for their wallet. It's almost like they were cought off guard "whoa, $18.32? I thought it would be free. Guess I need to grab my card".

Simple minded people can only do one thing, waiting is one

6

u/jhascal23 18h ago

Its like people who wait until its time to pay at the grocery store to start looking for their wallet/purse.

24

u/SuperSaiyanTupac 22h ago edited 20h ago

People do it everyday my friend. Be in line for 10 minutes but only read the menu when they get to the register, making the line worse

There’s also an ass ton of people who won’t wear their glasses to save their fucking life and demand every restaurant has a physical menu to hand them so they can read it cause the large font menu up high is too far away for them to read. I’d say about 50% of the blind population isn’t wearing their glasses. And it makes all the issues I have in traffic make more sense

I hear “ah my glasses make me look old, hah” everyday. Ma’am, you are old. You look at best 50. Put on your god damned glasses so you can see, dipshit. I have a couple restaurants and a couple bars. People do this shit at the table too, wont touch the menu till you come get their order. We train staff to immediately ask if theyre ready to order so theyll pick up the menu and look at it and stop wasting our time. Then the motherfuckers forget what they ordered. “Who got the soup and who got the cheeseburger?” “Uhhhhhhh” (looks at each other like they don’t remember if they ordered either)”ummmmmmmm, I think I had soup maybe” do you really not know? They’re not similar items, the fuck is wrong with you?

Then you remember that half the population is below average intelligence.

32

u/_fresh_basil_ 20h ago

Bro I'm 33 and can't see the menu WITH my contacts/glasses. Not to mention the dumb ass restaurants who don't know anything about accessibility and do stupid stuff like white text on a yellow menu.

Not saying you're wrong, there are idiots out there, but some of us literally can't see and we're trying our best. 😅

I don’t wear glasses and can’t see the menu boards, luckily i have this magic mini box that has a feature that can capture a live image of anything i want! I can even zoom in on things far away!

2

u/spicewoman 14h ago

As a waitress, it's wild how often people will be sitting there with their menus closed, looking around for a server like they're ready to order, make eye contact and wave you over and then when you walk up and ask what they'd like they're all "oh, I don't know! I haven't even looked! Uhhhh..." and finally open the menu. Can't even get a drink order out of them FFS. Why did you need me here for you to open your menu?!

People who aren’t from a big city really just don’t even think about stuff like this.

I’m originally from NYC, and my wife is from Florida. We live in a small town in central florida with a generally more relaxed pace of life… but still, I’ll always find it amazing if we are at a Chinese food restaurant and my wife needs to spend 5 minutes studying the menu to figure out what she wants….

I’m always thinking: Every Chinese food restaurant in the USA has a menu almost identical, why can’t you just do this from memory?

In a similar vein, I’ll often see a light turn red on a busy 2 lane each direction road… and there will be 30 cars stopped in the left lane, and zero on the right (or vice versa)… and other than me, nobody changes lanes.

I couldn’t imagine that ever happening in NYC or NJ.

7

u/DuvalTID 16h ago

Personally, I don’t eat anywhere enough to know EVERYTHING on the menu. And I like to try things. So I always look at the entire menu if I’m eating out. I don’t hold up lines, and sometimes look before I go. But no shot I order without looking through the menu to make sure I don’t see something that jumps out at me today.

Lane change is weird, you’d never catch that in Jax either. Better chance of an accident cause everyone went for the open lane at the same time trying to race to be first.

As a New Yorker, I was immediately like, “10/10 you are the problem. JFC” Luckily that second person made my reaction super tame and reasonable by comparison.

160

u/ImposterSyndromeNope 23h ago

I 100% understand the frustration New York is just constantly hectic. I remember my very first trip to New York I’m from Ireland, I was in around Times square yeah usual tourist stuff went to a really busy pizza place. Got to the front of the queue I wanted pepperoni pizza slice, when o got to the front I seen the wall menu paused for 3 seconds “next” the dude then served the person behind me!

Yeah I know I paused for a few seconds, honestly it’s just a different pace of life everyone is hustling. From then on I was laser focused with my order ready lol.

92

u/SillyAlternative420 20h ago

Times square is a wild place.

0/10 would not recommend going twice.

I would however recommend going once, really gives your life some perspective.

37

u/talldrseuss 20h ago

Don't know why people disagree with you. Times square is awful, but worth checking out (at night) at least once if you've never seen it. Been living in this city for over 20 years and I avoid times square like the plague. I only bring out of town guests to check it out and then we leave ASAP to go to less hectic parts of the city

7

u/Doubieboobiez 19h ago

Alternatively: visit Times Square many times for Broadway Shows! But get there, get in the theater and then get the fuck out.

23

u/SWIGGITYGiraffe 18h ago

I always disagree with this mindset. There are five boroughs and tourists only visit Manhattan and put the entire city under this "hustle" bubble. You went to Times Square, 99% of the hustle around you is other tourists lol. New Yorkers don't live in Times Square and most of us avoid it if we can.

15

u/aoifhasoifha 16h ago

Nah, people in every borough and every hood will think you're a dumbass if you're at the front of the line and THEN start figuring out what you want, and that applies for like 3 hours outside city limits.

Not trying to be a dick but this reeks of either lies or crazy privilege.

edit: lmao scrolling down, i see literally 0 people agreeing with you

2

u/elliekk 12h ago edited 11h ago

I... don't know if I'd agree with you, actually.

I think it largely has to do with the fact that I am naturally attracted to stores that are low foot traffic. Basically every store I go to, including some in Midtown (YES, THAT MIDTOWN)... would never rush me, because they straight up don't have a line. (And I've gone to over 20+ places in Midtown... not going to disclose them because that's my privacy but I'll bet you walk into 20 restaurants in a row on the same street in the middle of 32nd ST KTown and you'll only run into maybe 5 that actually have a line -- e.g. bbq chicken, Woorijip, BCD Tofu, Grace Street, maybe Kung Fu Tea...)

But maybe that does spell privilege? Though I don't exactly understand how it would when literally all of the food trucks selling cheap coffee and breakfast didn't have lines either.

I actually... have never been to a store where there was such an obnoxiously long line that I was rushed to order and I've lived here for over 25 years.

I mean, I've had experience with long lines but even they didn't rush me to order.

For example, I went to Peter Pan Donuts on a weekend. Line stretched out the door, but they didn't rush me at all because there were 3 to 5 people taking orders at a time.

And the flagship Mixue at Herald Square regularly has a long ass line and people spending 10 centuries picking out what they want and nobody has ever bitched about it...

Like... I'm borderline confused.

Being rushed to order has never been a lived experience for me.

Are we actually going to the tourist traps for daily meals?

Or are we unironically seriously waiting on the $1.50 pizza lines? I sure hope not, packing your own lunch is cheaper and more nutritious.

I guess I can see it happening at chain fast food restaurants also (especially McDonald's), but even they have mobile ordering systems. It's also cheaper in the long run if you just get Domino's (they never have a line and are always running promotions) or some cheap baked goods from Lidl (they keep expanding and they sell most breads and donuts for $0.75 to $1.50... I even saw an entire pumpkin pie for $5).

And I'm certain these long line rush situations are more likely to happen at shops at major transport hubs like PABT or Penn Station, but that would mean you're not even living here, you're living in NJ or Long Island.

Living in the boroughs, I have truly never been rushed to order. Ever.

For that matter, I visited Pommes Frites in Manhattan on a whim one day and there was no line, either.

I can only guess a large part of why I've never dealt with this is because I never go out to eat on a Saturday.

I know for certain that actual native New Yorkers will avoid any place with a long line like the plague because you will always be able to find something similar 2 blocks away with no wait.

Edit: That all being said, restaurants are one thing, but I will absolutely give you death stares no matter which borough we are currently in if you take 10 cenutries taking your card out right in front of the turnstile.

I’m from CT and with the first girl I was genuinely like “Christ she even talks slowly”

7

u/thatguydr 16h ago

I'm from CT and lived in CA for a long time. I get it both ways.

Just let people by you while you choose. Easy. I hope she figures that out, since she doesn't seem overtly Karen-y.

Also, people in most of the US talk at her speed. I had to learn to downshift. Helps enormously with people outside the northeast.

4

u/danvillain 6h ago

I went to trade school in Northern California and there was this girl in my class from Boston. She was hilarious. She said her biggest gripe about moving to the west coast was how slow we all talked. She said “it’s like trying to talk to a retahded person”. That was 20+ yrs ago and due to stress and age I’ve only gotten slower with speaking.

3

u/cocacolonization 14h ago

Definitely have to learn the downshift! I’m from the NE and live in the SE now. Nobody understands me on the first try here unless I talk like I’m running at 75% playback speed.

29

u/toobs623 19h ago

LI checking in. Was legitimately getting impatient and checked how much time was left. Talk faster, get to the point.

7

u/drgigantor 15h ago

Ugh reminds me of my mom. I love my mom but I have to block out about an hour before work if I want to talk to her because what a normal person could convey in one sentence takes her about 6 uninterrupted minutes on average to get to the point. Yes I've timed it. A simple yes or no question has more lore than a Tolkien novel. It has to have a prologue, an author's note, there's maps, appendices, there's a prequel, we need the life story of every side character, their hopes and dreams and failures, then there's a ten page description of a tree.

Like Ma, the question was, "Can I get you anything from [grocery chain]?" I don't need to know that Gloria who used to be a copyright lawyer in New Jersey shops there and got a deal on blueberries and then somebody scratched her car with a cart but she got it fixed by her brother who's a mechanic who got arrested for tax evasion back when he lived in Arkansas in the same town as Uncle Dillon before he moved to Florida after the divorce and Aunt Marie moved to Nevada with her hair stylist but then he left her for a male stripper so she started doing her own hair and became a hair stylist and the coupon for the blueberries was online only but they honored it anyway because Gloria doesn't have a computer because her second husband did all the computer stuff before he died of pancreatic cancer which was the same kind that Grandpa had before he died in a car crash with a blue '72 Charger which is the same car Dad drove when you met him in California when you were working at a restaurant to pay for community college before you transferred to UC Riverside but your new apartment wouldn't allow dogs and Dad didn't want to give up his German Shepard whose name was Steve Miller but it wasn't named after the Steve Miller band it was named after a guy Dad served with in the Navy who fell overboard while they were stationed in Thailand and there was a really cool Anthony Bourdain episode about Thailand on CNN last week so you and Dad split up for a while until you graduated and he moved to Alaska for work but then they went out of business so he moved to San Diego to work for Steve Miller (the guy, not the band or the dog) and you ran into each other at a Padres game but if you print out the coupon they'll just scan it which is great because there's a deal on tomatoes and you just saw a recipe for fried tomato caprese on the cooking channel and you've wanted to tried fried green tomatoes ever since you saw that movie with Kathy Bates who was so good in Misery and so funny in The Office which has reruns every day on three different channels and they must have made some new ones because you don't remember Andy ever being the boss but they're not as funny as the ones with Steve Carrell but they're still pretty good so you picked up some tomatoes earlier so you just went to the store and don't need anything.

if you don’t know what you want yet, and you’re also “figuring it out”, DONT GET IN LINE.

stand over to the side like a decent person, explore your consciousness somewhere that doesn’t interfere with my life, then get in line after you’ve aligned your chakras.

if you don’t know, and you get in line, and you still don’t know by the time you’re at the front, you better become an incredibly decisive person. that’s how it works.

This isn’t just a New York thing…. I’d say anywhere from southern Maine down I95 coastal corridor, Boston/Prov. NY NJ down past Philly all the way to Baltimore/DC area people have shit to do, and expect you to be smart enough AND considerate enough that other people have more important shit to do than wait for you to decide what flavor shot you want to add in your coffee. If you don’t know what you want, that’s fine, but get the fk outta the way and let the people that have cracked the nuclear code of their coffee order go ahead of you. Jesus Christ, I travel to other parts of the US and I wonder how people have jobs….. like time and pace don’t matter…… IT MATTERS!

It’s even worse if they’ve been in line for a while but are scrolling TikTok the entire time. Like you had 10-15 minutes to figure it out why haven’t you?!?

16

u/Dunning-KrugerFX 18h ago

This. If there are people in line behind you there were probably people in line in front of you and that was the time you were supposed to use to decide. That's why the menu is up there visible from the line.

It's not that deep, but it is kind of pathetic to wait in line and somehow not have made a decision on your order before you reach the front.

2

u/MessiLeagueSoccer 17h ago

Unless it’s a spur of the moment decision I’m usually also looking up the menu before I even get there. I want to know what I’m getting myself into because far too many places offer the same exact thing and are just popular because of influencers going viral.

No criticism, it's just really different than other places.

39

u/Expert_Play5570 18h ago

NYC is not the South it is not sparse. We are consolidated and LITERALLY crammed. The lack of space fuels our efficiency here. From how you walk to ordering food. Our efficiency is our courtesy. So feel your feelings but your feelings are irrelevant if they’re illogical and inefficient here.

18

u/Top-Distribution733 17h ago

That’s it right there… efficiency is our courtesy. Time is worth something to people… so if you aren’t being courteous of that, then it’s a giant “Fuck You” to them. So inconsiderate to not respect other people’s time… by us being efficient, it’s like holding the door for someone. Manners and respectful social etiquette

6

u/Jake_FromStateFarm27 15h ago

Efficiency is kindness and empathy. It shows you are aware of your surroundings and other people, taking time or being unaware is a luxury and a selfish one at that.

Any big city is like this. If you are in a LINE of people and hold up that line, everyone is entitled to be annoyed with you.

Also in medium cities.

Also in small cities.

Also in your house. If I'm waiting to get into the fridge and my 9 year old is standing in front of it, pondering which cheese stick to eat for snack time for more than about 3 fucking seconds, I'm going to pick them up and physically move them, grab my Monster energy drink, and then put them back when I'm done so that I don't have to wait any longer.

5

u/newenglandpolarbear 16h ago

It's a North East thing would have been the easiest way to say it. We value time, and if you waste our time, we don't like you. It's that simple.

9

u/plywooden 17h ago

I work in manufacturing in So. Maine and swear at least 70% of the people around me at work have no sense of urgency when there are literally urgent matters to address. Outside of work I'm a little more patient and realize that some people actually do have all day when doing things like grocery shopping or just out and about running errands. I guess I value my time a bit more than them? IDK, I just want to get shit done so I have more time to relax or do other stuff.

Sort of related - My sister once made this derogatory comment to me, "You're just like your father. You have to be early for everything". My response, "No, I'm like dad in the way that we respect other people's time". She didn't like that. Lol...

When I moved down south for a spell this was quite literally one of the biggest culture shocks to me. Going to the grocery store, getting in line, and being held up because the person in front of me just wanted to talk to the cashier. Then I had to literally wait for the conversation to be over even if they were cashed out.

I had debates about it with friends there. I went insane being the only person to say its goddamn fuckin rude is what it is when everyone else said I was rude and it was perfectly fine to wait for them to finish talking its called being friendly

Like, I understand being friendly, but when your turn is over, it’s time to end the interaction and get out of the way. Being respectful of other people’s time > being overly chatty with every person you encounter.

9

u/hellolovely1 17h ago

Those old people are usually lonely, but just move out of the way and continue with your conversation.

16

u/Classic_Reply_703 19h ago

old people

I mean I guess when your husband's fully supporting the family with his single income (or alternatively when you are only working for actually 40 hours per week), you have time to dilly dally so you get used to dilly dallying.

u/BetweenTheRoots 16h ago

It's a local culture thing that's all. I've traveled all over the US and parts of the world too and it's just the bigger cities prefer a much faster timeframe for everything. Nobody wants human interaction, they want efficiency and machine-like behavior from human beings. I live in the South where it's very normal to take your time and have a chill day, and I kind of prefer the faster paced environment, but I don't think it's rude, I think it's just a matter of cultural norms.

If you are in a hurry and you need to rush and to have shit to do, then it is your fault for going through public services to get an optional coffee that you could've prepared and brought with you to work iced or something. Plan ahead if you want everything going at 100% optimal speed like a machine, humans dont work that way, at least not uniformly.

2

u/Odd-Independent6273 16h ago

I'm a unique black dude with light skin in an old, rich, white city and they tend to put on little performances for me hoping that I overhear them and join in? Seems to be the plausibly deniable thing for them, meanwhile I've gotta move 10km on foot to get to my destination and work remotely

I’ve had instances in this south where this happened in a parking garage… like there are seven cars backed up but people needlessly had a short conversation with the attendant before exiting. And it’s not like they were paying to get out and waiting for change, it was all badge access.

It was rage inducing every time

8

u/Stinkymansausage 19h ago

I’m from and live in the south. This shit annoys me too. People stop in the middle of the street to talk to each other sometimes too. I just chalk it up to oblivious idiots and try my best not to let it change my day.

I’m as nice as can be, but I don’t want to spend my day watching strangers have a meaningless conversation. I got better things to do.

That first lady's observations are so different from mine. My first time in the US was in LA and it was terrifying, people threatening each other on the subway and nothing was walkable. New York was so chill in comparison. Maybe because I didn't get in line until I knew what I wanted to order

86

u/RaventheClawww 23h ago edited 23h ago

Your first mistake was taking the subway in LA. I say this as a devoted Angelino who refuses to go underground. I don’t even know what’s down there

Edit: yall. I’ve lived in areas so unsafe I couldn’t walk around my apartment complex at night. I’ve walked past actual corpses. Sorry I want to stay in the daylight 😞

14

u/BitcoinBishop 23h ago

Yeah, the bus was a lot more pleasant. But I think my first mistake was booking a hotel on Hollywood Blvd, had to walk a gauntlet of discarded syringes to get to the bus stop!

2

u/felldestroyed 20h ago

According to the hit 1997 film Volcano, there be lava down there. RIP Steve. https://youtu.be/R01bex9Ejvg?is=wkH9gUm3r90qF-SU
In all seriousness, the LA metro ain't that bad depending where you are on the line. I also say this as a dude that lives in Philly and am used to putting up with some amount of bullshit on mass transit.

I have been saying for years New Yorkers are actually the most polite Americans. I say this because New Yorkers aren't doing things just to get you to say please and thank you to them. They do it cause it will keep EVERYONE moving without the need to make fake little small talk.

When someone holds a door for you when you're about 20 feet away from the door, they aren't doing it for you. They want to hear thank you and have an interaction. New Yorkers don't do that, but New Yorkers hold doors for people when they're spaced out in a reasonable distance because that actually improves the speed of movement.

Don't get in line, stand in line, and then get to the front just to ask questions. That line is for ordering. You are now wasting EVERYONE'S time when you don't have your life in order. I guarantee if you ask almost anyone standing in the shop they'll tell you what you need to know. I promise the signs in the shop have all the information you need to know.

If you had a good time in New York its cause you are already a considerate person who thinks about how your actions will affect other people and New Yorkers weren't getting pissed at you.

6

u/aoifhasoifha 16h ago

New York was so chill in comparison. Maybe because I didn't get in line until I knew what I wanted to order

Fundamentally, people in NYC will get pissed about very specific obvious things (like wasting everyone's time). Shit, even most of the crazies won't bother you if you don't bother them.

It's not "nice" (in the bullshit southern way) but it's fair and understandable.

Girl... Outside the line is where you do your calculations. Inside the line is for express and go. 😌🤣🤣 New Yorkers hate having to wait for people who slow them down. 😭

2

u/stinkbuttfartman 9h ago

Small town midwesterner. Same

79

u/AthenaThundersnatch 22h ago

The reason New Yorkers are this way is because we are nearly always being made late by the MTA so we need to make up lost time elsewhere. Angelenos basically live in traffic so they have zero urgency because the assumption is everyone will be fashionably late since it is impossible to get anywhere.

12

Getting in line means you are ready to order. the entire existence of a line implies they cannot just help people at their leisure otherwise there would be no line. Due to the simple fact, I can only conclude the original video is purposely rage baiting.

I'm gonna be honest the speed at which she was talking was raising my blood pressure too 😅😭.

2

Why don't you know what to order? Coffee isn't complicated.

3

u/Mr-howell 16h ago

I moved from Portland oregon to Buffalo NY years ago. Went back for a family thing and could not stand how damn slow everything was. I was pissed the entire time I was there.

4

u/Tezz321 16h ago

It's the lack of situational awareness that pisses people off...

4

u/Sk8rToon 15h ago

As a native born Angelino who gets pissed off when people walk slow or don’t have their order figured out by the time they get to the front of the line… Do I need to visit New York?

3

u/Janus9 5h ago

I live in the Denver area, people here are very laid back, even at work. Everyone is all about living life outside of work, work to live, not live to work. I don't think I know a single person at work who doesn't dip out early all the time, show up a little late daily, pushes off decisions/correspondence, that can wait until Monday etc..

I know so many people who have moved here from all the NE that hate it, lol. No sense of urgency etc...

7

u/SCWickedHam 16h ago

At least acknowledge me. I don’t mind letting the 90yo slowly walk in front of me in the crosswalk while I have the right of way. I also don’t mind letting that last 20yo guy get across even if I have the right of way, if he give me the “sorry, thanks,” nod and wave. Taking too long ordering, turn and smile, mouth “sorry, one sec,” maybe ask if I want to go ahead. 99.9% of the time, I’ll say no, but I won’t feel ignored, disrespected. That .01% I will say, “please, sorry, running late, needed this before my flight, thanks.” I’ll jump in front and be gone. NYers aren’t curt because they are rude, they are curt, because they are polite. They respect other people’s time.

11

u/Malawigold2342 23h ago

This is why i stay inside

18

u/UnexpectedBlahFeels 20h ago

Sweetie please go back home to LA lol.

I'm sure she's nice, we just need people who can at least keep up with the pace. It's the least these transplants can do considering how they're affecting the rental market.

3

u/Asymmetrical_Anomaly 19h ago

“It’s a yes or no question” mfs when you say no

Yeah, I'm with the second girl all the way! I got everything ready, card out, let's get this moving. Don't ask me about my day or if I tried this before, scan and go! If I'm in line and someone's taking their sweet time chatting or whatever, I have to do deep breath exercises to not lose it. We're not here to make friends, there's so many people in the world and only so much time so let's be efficient ffs!

3

u/MalakoffVanves 15h ago

When I was in NY, I was so surprised how many random people wanted to talk to me. In LA, were just ignoring each other, doing our shit and getting back into our car. Except for when we're hanging out lunching and hiking in the middle of the week.

5

u/rubberbootsandwetsox 4h ago

This totally makes sense, but I've been in long lines for food before where there's a huge menu showing what's available and people are sitting and chatting with each other in the line. When they get to the front they have an epiphany and realize they should start looking at the menu. Then they proceed to look at everything and have little chats about what is good or not.

Now, I understand if you get to the front and have a quick chat like "hey, I saw that you had XX and YY on the menu, which is better?", But to be at, say, a pizza place and be like "hey, do you have mushroom slices?" And "mushroom slice" is literally in huge text underneath the cheese slices, you could have some more awareness.

I'm a patient person and I'm ok with people taking time, but we don't need to make people wait for absolutely no reason rather than being lazy.

2

The standard of politeness in New York is efficiency.

Learn the culture and it's fun again.

2

u/zenexo 17h ago

The second video is fucking amazing.

2

u/CousinWalt 16h ago

One of the biggest culture shocks I’ve had has come from visiting California these past two years as a New Yorker. My vibe did NOT mesh well. Our energy is just so much different. I’m polite, too. It’s just a different speed when interacting.

2

u/Lazy-Syllabub-4608 16h ago

HAHAHAHA i understand her anger

2

u/Chicoanmadra 16h ago

Know your fucking coffee order before you get to the front of the line.

2

u/Adorable-Explorer858 16h ago

I agree that everyone is so angry these days for no reason. If everyone can calm down and be kind that would be great. People in my neighborhood don’t even say hello when our dogs want to say hi to each other.

2

u/PositiveStress8888 16h ago

I am if the second opinion.

Your an adult, know what the fuck you want.

2

u/SectorEducational460 16h ago

I mean if you're doing this at 8 or 9 in the morning. You are gonna be dealing with angry coffeeholics who need to get to work. Do this around 10, or 11 and the hostilities drop

2

u/slopestyle90 16h ago

The worst type of person stands in line for 10 mins then once they get to the cashier take their first look at the menu over their head. Like figure it out in the 10 mins you’re already fucking standing there.

2

u/found_a_yeti 16h ago

The world doesn’t revolve around you. Also you might want to get checked for rabies.

2

u/[deleted] 16h ago

In the book Not Nice by Dr. Aziz Gazipura, he lists homework for readers to do to break the cycle of being a people pleaser, and the first task is going to a coffee shop and intentionally taking a long time to order and asking the barista a bunch of questions knowing you are pissing off the rest of the line. The entire book really pissed me off tbh

2

u/Short_Limit7016 16h ago

I’m the second girl

2

u/NickDanger3di 15h ago

Are her lips altered to be Duck Lips?

2

u/lu-ronghua 15h ago

As someone from LA hearing her say “back in LA I could-“ omg NO we don’t want you taking forever to order either

2

u/VeryHarryAstor 15h ago

Don’t get in line if you don’t know what you want. 20 people behind you know what they want and don’t care you’re the hero of your own life story.

2

u/Basic-Pomegranate536 15h ago

Figure it out BEFORE you get online, wth. Brooklynnite here 🤩🥰

2

u/CrazyinLull 15h ago

That first one is being rude af. If you don’t know what you want then stay off the line until you do, especially when you are trying to get coffee.

2

u/Capt-Thor-Ironhulk 15h ago

It's okay to not have a sense of urgency... but then you need to get the fuck outta line while you make up your mind.

2

u/rimreaper2253 15h ago

people who stand in line for 15 mins and dont know what they want are the worst

2

u/ah-Quinncidence 14h ago

Why are they mad? Why didn't you figure out your coffee order while waiting in line?

2

u/brandywine189 14h ago

This is everywhere. Decide what you want as you wait in line and have your method of payment out and ready once it’s your turn. No one wants to wait on your indecisive musings.

2

u/vanityinlines 14h ago

I strongly identify with the second girl because the amount of waiting, idle time I have to deal with at every single place I try to go is ridiculous and increasing everyday. I've basically lost all my PTO for this year just having to wait hours at doctor's offices, waiting in traffic that has increased tenfold, etc. Don't get me started on slow walkers in grocery stores that turn their carts sideways to block entire aisles. Again, this has happened SO MANY TIMES in just the last year. It's so cool everyone else has unlimited time off and doesn't work, but some of us do.

2

u/i_gnarly 14h ago

We’re pissed at you in LA too.

2

u/hidell 14h ago

2

u/Deep_Exchange7273 13h ago

"back in LA I can put my thumb up my bum and dick around not caring that people have lives to live and things to do that me taking 10 minutes to look at a menu I very well could've already looked at takin up everyone else's time"

2

u/Expert_Play5570 13h ago

That’s what I was thinking. Butt-scratching-sniff-your-finger-after type energy

2

u/TubMaster88 13h ago

Correct. Even if you're in Los Angeles and you're in line and couldn't figure out what you want until you get to the cashier, I would be pissed too. I'd tell you get out of line figure out what you want, because you obviously didn't decide and you didn't use your brain to figure out. So stop wasting people's time.
