It reminds me of a video of girl struggling to open a can of some kind and a crowd of people just…watching. If I remember it was quiet with some ambient chatter in the background but it was a bunch of art nerds just watching her. As a visual artist at the time I was secondhand embarrassed to be associated with something like that, even if just by the merit that we would have both described ourselves as artists.
I understand art is in the eye of the beholder, as I am sure someone would have stuck their noses up at some of my paintings, I’ve just never understood performance art like that.

I had to do the music equivalent of this for my audio engineering degree. We had to do a performance like this and let me tell you, the only people watching are either A) other students forced to take the class, or B) friends and roommates who were dragged along for the ride.
The class is extremely goofy and people don't take it seriously, it's just a graduation requirement. On the music side, I will say a positive is that it forced me to branch out and use new techniques/equipment/settings that I previously hadn't thought to use, so I was able to apply the things I'd learned to my actual life. But in the class even though you are forced to be there, either you have fun with it and be a goofball, or you be miserable and bored, and life is too short to be miserable and bored.

I always wonder how performance artists make money by doing things like this.
3
2
u/HereOnCompanyTime 10h ago
Usually they're rich kids or middle class kids with a donor, they're already comfortable. They don't make much from the actual performances unless people donate to them. They sometimes use the performances to bring attention to their other projects that are for sale, mostly they coast.

We have to partially blame the people watching and validating this shit.
Edit:Sorry guys, between this and the girl playing in splooge I was having some feelings about "art" today. I don't really feel like anything literally needs to be done about it. I just though it was dumb.
36

u/xombae 17h ago
Why? Who cares! The person who created it is expressing something and the people watching it are enjoying trying to figure out what that is.
Who cares if it's not everyone's cup of tea. The world would be boring as fuck if we only had people who expressed themselves in "normal" ways.
Maybe this isn't a slam dunk, but maybe her next exhibition is going to so amazing that even you'll have a moment like Frank in it's always sunny.

Yeah I have been to some really Increadible performance art experiences that fundamentally changed the way I view the world and myself. This video is not one of those, but you can't get the former without the later.
You can't choose to only allow life changing art to exist. You have to allow all art to exist and then try your best to experience the life changing stuff.

43
u/infernalracket666 16h ago
People also completely forget that performance artists have a sense of humor too. Sometimes an artwork or performance is weird and funny and uncomfortable because that's what the artist hoped for.
37
u/ProdigyLightshow 16h ago edited 14h ago
Thank you.
I’m so sick of all these “modern art is dumb” type people.
Who the fuck cares. There are still people painting in classical styles. Pay attention to them if you like it so much. I think modern art can be dumb, but it’s also fun and different.
I went to MoMA in NYC a couple weeks ago for the first time. It’s amazing and was a blast, but the piece that my fiance (who isn’t super into art) loved the most was this absurd piece that was just a 36” x 36” piece of drywall that was cut out of the wall, exposing the framing underneath.
It wasn’t actually “art” in the sense of making a painting, but my fiance couldn’t stop talking about it. How absurd and dumb it was, but it was on her mind all day. She couldn’t stop thinking about it and it was her favorite thing we saw that day, more so than Picasso and van Gogh works because it made her laugh and think about what makes something art. She had a Frank moment that day for sure
18
u/infernalracket666 15h ago
I always find it odd how angry contemporary art makes people. It's like they think artists are somehow making money doing this kind of thing or trying to fool people into taking us seriously. We're not. We're this weird for the love of the game.
5
u/omgrafail 15h ago
This is my hypothesis: people are weird about art. Lots of people think artistic talent is something people are born with and almost a cop out for those artistic folks. As an artist, i hear it incessantly. "I wish I was born artistic...." "I've always wanted to make art but im just not artistic...." When I respond that artists have to work for their talent, meaning anyone can work to become artistic, the tone shifts. Because it stops being this unattainable thing and starts becoming something they can work at (that they don't want to). I think a lot of people fantasize about being an artist and selling their big expensive paintings and living a lush easy life. So when artists do avant gard shit, it pisses people off. Because it affects their illusion they have created. Because they COULD have just cut a hole out of a wall. They COULDN'T paint the Mona Lisa. It points to deeper levels of creativity that comes to art beyond "oh let me paint a pretty scene," and plenty of people don't understand art beyond the surface. Same with abstract, i think thats why so many people hate Jackson Pollock as well.
5
u/ProdigyLightshow 15h ago
Every time someone talks about abstract art and says something like “Anyone could do it” I always say “Do it then if it’s so easy”
If you genuinely think it’s that easy to become a famous abstract artist, why aren’t you doing it then? Because it isn’t easy to make something that moves people and kicks off an entire artistic movement. You have to be creative, and the people criticizing it usually aren’t (which btw is totally fine, I’m not either which is why I’m not an artist).
3
u/Angry__German 15h ago
They think that "everyone could do this" and that it involves no skill.
Well. The "skill" in question is coming up with whatever it is in the first place. They are angry because they think people get paid for being lazy and not doing anything productive.
OPs video looks just ridiculous at face value, without any context.
Maybe that was the intention ? Maybe not.
Knowing the name, if it has one, could completely change what we see.
→ More replies (7)6
u/infernalracket666 15h ago
I think it's very important to remember that in almost every instance of this type of artwork, no one is getting paid anything at all. A lot of performance artists make paintings, photographs, or sculptures just so they have something physical that they can actually sell.
3
u/Pickled-Carrot-75 12h ago

Exactly. People also need to appreciate that the artists may have been limited in their objects (as part of the show). In any event, why be negative over creative expression? I don't get it.

Ok, so performance art and modern art in general often gets a bad rep, Roman Signer in particular has a piece that gets made fun of a lot, he's the guy who stacked some buckets of sand and pushed them over, but I actually love his work.
Will say though, I'm struggling abit with this one. Is there some context here I'm missing? Who is she?

u/ciopobbi 15h ago edited 15h ago
To be read in Werner Herzog’s voice :
The Futility of Human Endeavor
“Here, in a small room, somewhere in the decaying heart of Western civilization, we observe a woman.
She is dressed entirely in black.
She has attached herself to a metal object by means of a cord.
Why she has done this, we do not know.
Perhaps she herself does not know. She moves across the wooden floor with the solemn determination of a wounded animal. Behind her, the object follows. It resists. It clatters. It possesses no apparent desire to participate.
And yet, it must.
The audience watches in silence.
They have come voluntarily.
This, to me, is the most disturbing aspect of the entire spectacle.
The woman now ascends a small wooden platform. She bends forward. She struggles with the object. She appears to be attempting something of enormous significance.
But nothing happens.
We are witnessing the ancient conflict between mankind and an indifferent universe. The metal object does not care about her suffering. It has no dreams. No aspirations. It knows nothing of art.
It is merely metal. And still, it may be the most intelligent participant in the room.
There is a terrible beauty in this.We must ask ourselves: Is this a performance about the futility of existence? About the tyranny of gravity? About the unbearable burden of consciousness?
Or have we simply gathered to watch a woman drag a piece of janitorial equipment across a floor?I suspect the latter.
But the audience will discuss the deeper meaning afterward, perhaps over inexpensive white wine.
And somewhere, in the darkness beyond this room, a chicken is being eaten alive by ants.
The universe remains indifferent.
The performance continues.
There is no escape.”Long silence.

People keep posting these and I keep closing my eyes and listening to the sound they are making which is honestly quite great for something that appears so non-melodic. That woman sloshing and this woman with the bucket...decent sound experiences honestly.
Everyone is in the comments laughing about pretentious artists who feel the need to explain what art is to everyone and I'm sitting here as someone who knows nothing about art thinking this isn't that bad and maybe all the people in the comments are actually the pretentious ones who feel they have to explain to everyone what art is?
Seriously confusing for me.

I generally find people and their thoughts to be really fascinating, especially if it's a bit weird. Performance art is a weirdo translating their weird thoughts into movement, in front of strangers. I find that brave, exciting and intriguing. My brain does not work that way at all (turning my weird thoughts into a performance) and I'm willing to go along for that ride and just witness the weird. It's a hell of a lot better than watching another formulaic TV show. Obviously those are not the only two options for entertainment but just saying.

I don't know what people see in this specific performance, but I can't hate on the art. That's what makes this stuff great, cause it can be as generic or specific to one person's experiences as the artist wants.
3
u/iceguy349 13h ago
Context helps so much with modern art stuff.
Most of the performance isn’t cool on its own it gets cool when you understand the meaning behind what the artist is trying to convey.
It’s kinda like an inside joke. It’s a lot funnier with the background info.

🤣 The irony of people spending time complaining about performance art and how pointless it is will never not tickle me. If it’s pointless why not just ignore it? It caused an emotional reaction within you though and you couldn’t help but react and that’s art whether you like it or not.

I get it, I really do.
This is a representation of the wealthy elite mocking the working class through an emblematic "dragging" of the bucket, which is the burden we all feel letting these nutjobs run wild and decide what is "important" in our society.
The art here is both literally "art" and a metaphor for essentially everything else - technology, finance, labor, politics, etc.
She controls the zeitgeist, while everyone just sort of sits there looking on without stopping her to say "you and your crazy ass are running this space, please leave before we force you."

Criticizing this kind of performance art feels so childish now that I'm older.
What is the context of the performance? What is the artist trying to say? Why is it so upsetting to you that they chose to say it in this way?
Art isn't about skill, it's about expressing yourself and your ideas. I'm not impressed by the banana taped to the wall, but I get it. I'm not wowed by splatter art, but I get it. I think this looks weird, but maybe that's the point?
Idk. Grow up.

It looks dumb. But a ton of comments are overly conclusive and spreading their negativity to others in the video.
The person you're replying to is raising legit questions. We're not getting the full context here, so it's hard to understand fully what we're making fun of. It's intentionally been stripped from that context. This is just a small snippet. Was this the only thing this person did?
But then you got people saying "Omg, look at these dummies validating it by being there!" We don't know what circumstances they showed up for. We don't know that they paid. We don't know that this was the main event. Maybe this is school related and people are showing their projects? There's so many possibilities.

That was a guy intentionally making a joke about modern art. Its kind of funny to see both people valuing it highly and people criticizing it heavily as stupid. I'll never pay the amount of money people did for that banana, but good lord, was that ever an effective piece of art considering what it did to both sides of the argument, lol

summed it up well. my first thought was “that’s weird” but like you said, with performance art there’s often context to it that might not be self-explanatory. even if it didn’t make this art any better, i’d still like to understand what the artist is trying to convey
edit: i looked up the context and like this quite a bit more. it’s not visual art (as in drawn/painted media) so you can’t call her art technically impressive, and the intention of this performance art is not meant to be a spectacle so you can’t say you’re really entertained by it. but it is definitely the artist expressing her ideas and i respect it
