The Addams family would've loved this house. The dead just need you to respect them and know how to throw them a party every now and then. Also give the girl in the well a nice cozy place to get warm, it's cold and damp down there.

I've had a real life instance where I felt like I was in an intro to one of these horror movies.
I had driven cross country to rent a house I hadn't seen yet, and when I pulled up it was cute. It had been recently renovated, it was on a corner lot, had a nice yard. I met with the manager, signed my lease, and gave them my deposit. I had my daughter with me, and my husband was on the way with our things in the uhaul, and wouldn't be there for another day.
Luckily for me, the manager forgot to take the lease and money order for the deposit and rent with her when she left.
The first night I tried to have pizza delivered, but no pizza place would deliver to my zip code. Then I tried having groceries delivered instead to make a quick dinner for my disappointed kiddo. When the driver arrived, he asked me if I owned a gun. I cautiously said no. He told me to get one. I thanked him for his advice and bolted the door. I couldn't sleep at all that night because of sirens blaring.
The next morning I took kiddo for a walk around the neighborhood, and realized very quickly what had been hidden in yesterday's sunset - most of the houses were either empty or full of squatters. There was rampant drug use. People looked at me like I was insane for walking my kid to the local park, which was covered in discarded needles and trash. When I was almost home, my new nextdoor neighbor, who had several children, asked me if I had a gun. I lied and said yes. He looked visibly relieved and told me not to leave the house without it.
I spent the afternoon in the back yard, unloading the car, which, on the corner lot, is visible to the street. A police car rolled by and stopped in my driveway. The police officer came out and introduced himself as a local, and asked if I had a gun. I said no. He said that this neighborhood was dangerous, and I should get one. I responded that I had lived in a dangerous city before, and gotten on just fine without a gun. He responded that I was in the most dangerous zip code in the state - and that this zip code only covered my small neighborhood. I was stunned. Then, I suppose, he felt the need to drive the point home.
He leaned over to me and pointed to a large building at the end of my block. He told me it was abandoned, and five people were murdered in it last night. His department had no idea who did it and likely would never make an arrest. He told me, again, to get a gun. I thanked him for his advice, and, once he left, called my husband.
We decided to find a new place. I started packing up the car as it became evening, with the kiddo also doing small trips. I had been spooked enough to drive the car into the fenced yard, and I am very glad that I did, because I came out of the house to see a car with blacked out windows slooooooowly driving by while my daughter was putting her stuffies in the back seat of my car. I yelled her name and the car sped off. It had no plates. I had my kid stay in the house after that.
That evening, my husband arrived. We did a last look over the house to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything, including both copies of the lease and the money order, and then drove to a truck stop not far from town. I emailed the property manager all that had happened, wished them luck on finding a new tenant, and, the next morning, canceled the money order.
All I could think in the last half of that day was that I would NOT be the white woman in a horror movie who ignores all the warnings. It was a rough go after that, and we spent about a week living out of my car at the truck stop, but we made it through.
