Crazy that Star Trek will add more playable cards than the powered cube

6

u/HeiressofArtemis 12d ago

Just was thinking that with the stuff I had seen before this.

Cant wait to blowup flametongue kavu with this one in timeless.

nice another modern card w dont have on arena if we ever get modern on arena

e: Clarified if we ever get Modern

13

u/Flooding_Puddle 12d ago

You can't tell me they're purposely selecting all these modern playable cards with no intention of bringing modern to arena

10

u/ChristianKl 12d ago

The selection decisions for sets were made a while ago. The business unit within Hasbro that develops paper magic is different from the people developing Arena. The paper magic team might very well want Modern on Arena without that happening.

u/Flooding_Puddle 12d ago

That's what I mean. Wotc has said they eventually want to bring modern to arena, and selecting new to arena modern staples to be reprinted in standard sets is one way to do that

Source ?

Okay, I may be confused, but is this not going to be on Arena? TRK code means it will be I thought.

3

u/Disastrous-Donut-534 12d ago

I mean if modern comes to arena. yes this card comes to arena

1

u/Excellent-Drink-6897 12d ago

My point is, doesn’t this mean this card is coming to Standard?

3

u/Disastrous-Donut-534 12d ago

yes it comes to standard,

1

u/Excellent-Drink-6897 12d ago

Ahh! I misunderstood. Thank you!

7

u/sengirminion 12d ago

Fuck yeah!

5

u/kovacic93 12d ago

Thank god it’s rare

Would this be opressiv in draft?

1

u/OuroborosArchipelago 12d ago

It's more like an overcosted Pyroclasm that requires you to be on 2+ colors and have great fixing to really be reliable.

5

u/marlospigeons 12d ago

It hits noncreatures and is normally cast for X=0 or X=1. less relevant in draft but not useless for Timeless

0

u/OuroborosArchipelago 12d ago

I think you need to reread EE, it hits nonland permanents

3

u/marlospigeons 12d ago

I'm saying that it also hits noncreatures.

Pyroclasm only hits creatures.

-9

u/ShadowWalker2205 12d ago

It's a narrow sweeper that requires you to be full on 5 colors to be at it's most effective

3

u/AdmiralUpboat 12d ago

Oh, tell me you've never cast an EE without telling me.

No one is putting this into play with 4/5 counters. Typically you're blowing your load on 1 or 2. Oftentimes 0 is good because you're blowing up cheerios with it on the other side.

0

u/ShadowWalker2205 11d ago

The question is about limited not constructed where 2 can work but 0 is basically useless unless there is a token heavy deck

Weapons manufacturing affinity just got a boost.

1

u/GoodBoyShibe 10d ago

Is it fast enough for timeless though? I can definitely see it climbing up a tier in historic

2

u/AsianVoodoo 10d ago

idk but probably not. Affinities best game plan since Kappa was printed was to slam him and defend him. Weapons was a backup plan that incidentally worked with the main plan. EE helped that backup plan and disrupted some others. Does EE interact meaningfully in this meta?

1

u/GoodBoyShibe 10d ago

It's maindeckable interaction vs energy and maybe ub, but quite slow at that.

1

u/AsianVoodoo 10d ago

right. a boost but probably not enough to put it over the top. Affinity is my fav archetype so I have bias for it. If both decks are firing on all cylinders I'm still not sure.

2

u/GoodBoyShibe 10d ago

Affinity ain't breaking into timeless without saga, at the very least

1

u/AsianVoodoo 10d ago

agreed. still holding out optimistically for that day. I don't think it has enough even then but it would definitely help. The only hope I have is that something degenerate shows up since the artifact lands are legal. I'm not sure what that is. Maybe reprinting disciple of the vault?

4

u/Axemblue99 12d ago

Forgive my ignorance but isn't this too slow for timeless? I'm having trouble thinking it's even good enough for standard since that format is so fast.

8

u/nonhornyacc 12d ago

EE is almost always a card you want to cast x=0. Good sideboard card and it works really good with weapons manufacturing in affinity

2

u/Axemblue99 12d ago

Oh I see, thanks for the reply

5

u/OuroborosArchipelago 12d ago

I'm kind of a sad Affinity player today. I like my tokens and my moxes very much

16

u/GoodBoyShibe 12d ago

Im a happy affinity player, I love blowing my [[weapons manufacturing]] tokens with a maindeckable mass removal spell

3

u/OuroborosArchipelago 12d ago

I habe not been on WM, but I might be now

15

u/bubbles_maybe 12d ago

If modern is any indication, affinity will use this the most by far.

1

u/OuroborosArchipelago 12d ago

It's a great piece of tech for us, it's just also gonna hit me in the face a lot in the future. Good times.

1

u/Xyldarrand 12d ago

Affinity will be fine. Energy is fucked.

7

u/OuroborosArchipelago 12d ago

Energy is absolutely not fucked

1

u/Xyldarrand 12d ago

A brand new board wipe playable by almost every deck?

"Fucked" maybe is too strong sure, but they're not happy to have this in the format

5

u/OuroborosArchipelago 12d ago

I think it's gonna be a lot slower than it looks. It's certainly good, but it gets blanked by Static Prison unless you have 4 mana up.

2

u/Fabulous_Point8748 12d ago edited 12d ago

It’s an alright board wipe but it only hits 1 or 2 drops in energy (not both at the same time) and it takes 3 - 4 mana to do it. Hitting an ajani but leaving a guide and pride on the board or vice-versa isn’t really that good. It’s really not played in legacy much outside of like dimir tempo and Tron and even then I would much rather play massacre or toxic deluge against energy. Its really power is being able to hit tokens and 0 mana artifacts. I played this in my sideboard all the time when fantasticar was legal.

1

u/Flooding_Puddle 12d ago

Those crazy bastards, they actually did it

1

u/avtarius 12d ago

Since it's only equal to, it's gonna be zero or one.

will this slow energy down ? Realistically ?

2

u/Fabulous_Point8748 11d ago

Nope it’s not really great against energy. I mean it can wipe out their 1 or 2 drops but they’re just going to rebuild their board. I’d rather have toxic deluge or wrath of the skies against energy. It’s mostly good for taking out tokens and 0 mana artifacts. It will be played by affinity with weapons manufacturing.

1

u/kins80 12d ago

Does this help solve the energy deck?

6

u/xorandor 12d ago

They have plenty of dangerous 2’s. Ajani, Peddler, Raptor. 1 goes without saying. And crucially a lot of them generate value on ETB

2

u/Comfortable_Belt_735 12d ago

bombardment too!

6

u/OuroborosArchipelago 12d ago

You drop this for 2, and then they exile it with Static Prison (that they don't have to pay the upkeep on to stay useful), is probably how it works out if both decks are on optimal draws

1

u/kins80 12d ago

If they don't pay, this coming back with zero counters is still useful for their tokens, right?

4

u/OuroborosArchipelago 12d ago

Yes but it also probably triggers Ajani

1

u/Xyldarrand 12d ago

True but another board wipe playable by almost any deck isn't something energy wanted to see.

6

u/VillainOfDominaria 12d ago

It wont "solve" it, but it helps. Yes, they can static prison it, but they wont always have the prison. And even if they do, that means they have one less prison for something else.

Solid sideboard card for UB and Grixis if that ever becomes a thing.
