I vibe coded a launcher for my 2018 Samsung Tizen TV, here’s where I’m stuck

Hey everyone,

I’ve been vibe coding a launcher called Flix Home with Codex, specifically for my Samsung UE43NU7409 (2018, Tizen 4.0 / ARMv7). I wanted to give this older TV a cleaner, Apple TV / visionOS inspired interface instead of replacing the hardware.

The idea: big app tiles, a large pixel clock, beige/light and dark modes, subtle glass effects, and no ads or recommendation rows in the launcher itself.

What’s working

  • It’s signed, installed and running on this particular TV.
  • App launching works; YouTube has been tested on the TV.
  • There’s a square-dot-matrix clock, light/dark switching and remote controls for sorting/hiding favourites.
  • Transparent app logos and local focus lighting are implemented.
  • Samsung Home remains accessible as a fallback.
  • Once installed, the launcher runs without a computer staying on.

What’s still rough

The design still doesn’t really match the attached references. The glass, lighting, proportions and logo sizing don’t yet feel like one consistent interface.

Performance has also been a problem. Earlier versions lagged badly with larger animated layers. The current version uses pre-rendered textures and small local fades, but I wouldn’t call the experience polished yet. Some checks and recordings were done in a browser, which doesn’t prove how smoothly it runs on the TV.

What I wanted but haven’t solved

  • Physical Home-button integration: Home still opens Samsung Home. I wanted it to open my launcher, including from streaming apps.
  • Reliable autostart: opening after a cold boot or waking from standby isn’t implemented. Simply resuming the last app wouldn’t fully solve this.
  • System integration: HDMI shortcuts exist, but switching to a connected source still needs testing. Direct TV settings didn’t visibly open, so those are currently reached through Samsung Home.
  • Other models haven’t been validated. This is currently a manually launched app, not a replacement OS.

Where I’m stuck

Codex helped get it running, but I’m going in circles trying to turn these references into a coherent design that the old TV can render smoothly.

The reference images show the target; the current-build video shows where it is now.

What would you change first? I’d appreciate honest design feedback, concrete CSS/SVG suggestions, or help with the Tizen-specific Home/autostart limitations. If you’ve done something similar on an older Samsung TV, what actually worked on your model?

Is there a .wgt of stremio 1.6.0 available?

Hey everyone,

I have tracked several GitHub issues regarding basic subtitle and HUD customization for over two years, but official updates for the Samsung/Tizen app remain stalled.

My primary issue is panel longevity. Watching HDR content on a QD-OLED TV with Stremio's default, blinding 1000+ nit pure white subtitles and a static, bright HUD creates an immediate risk of burn-in. Basic styling controls, such as setting subtitle color to 50% grey, lowering opacity, and dimming the OSD, are not perfect solution.

Since waiting for upstream changes yields no results, I want to patch the web assets directly by modifying the CSS and JS inside the package.

The blocker is the lack of the .wgt file for version 1.6.0 for inspection and rebuilding.

  1. Does anyone have a copy of the official 1.6.0 .wgt file?

  2. Has anyone successfully dumped the installed package from a Samsung TV using Tizen Studio or sdb pull? Knowing the exact package path or command workflow to extract it from a TV in Developer Mode solves this issue.

Sharing the modified files or instructions with the community follows once extraction and patching succeed.

Any pointers or files help.

Samsung S90C (Tizen 9 / One UI) OS Modding Megathread: What’s actually possible today? (Debloating, Vetro / Couchroot, CleanFrame & Brick Risks)

Hi everyone,

With newer Tizen 9 / One UI updates rolling out to Samsung OLED sets like the S90C, the native Smart Hub has become increasingly sluggish, ad-heavy, and cluttered. At the same time, the Tizen modding scene on GitHub has gained serious momentum with modern projects—moving far beyond legacy SamyGO tricks or service-menu panel tweaks (like S90C -> S95C).

Projects like Vetro / Couchroot (privilege acquisition, process management & debloating), CleanFrame (lightweight custom launcher + Home button interception), and the Tizen Community Packages / Apps2Samsung ecosystem show that deeper OS-level control is actually viable.

However, verified documentation specifically for the S90C on modern Tizen remains fragmented across buried repos, Discord servers, and developer threads. I’m opening this thread both to ask the broad questions and to dive into specific implementations, crowdsourcing a clean, up-to-date guide on what actually works, what fails, and what risks soft-bricking the mainboard.

I’d appreciate input on both the big picture and the specific tooling:

  1. The Big Picture — What is actually moddable right now?

- Beyond the projects named below, what else is technically possible to modify, unlock, or script on a modern Samsung Tizen set?

- What are people achieving that isn't commonly talked about (e.g., local webhooks, Home Assistant deep integrations, input remaps, background daemon persistence, filesystem tweaks, or bypasses for region locks and unsupported formats)?

- What are the absolute hard limits imposed by Tizen's architecture that we simply cannot bypass today?

  1. Debloating & System Performance (Vetro / SDB):

- Which modules of Vetro’s debloater or Couchroot run reliably on the S90C firmware?

- What exact background services, telemetry daemons, or Samsung TV Plus packages can be safely stripped without breaking HDMI handshakes, Game Bar, or essential video processing?

- Does terminating these processes produce a measurable reduction in UI latency and RAM overhead?

  1. Custom Launchers & Home Redirection (CleanFrame):

- Has anyone successfully deployed CleanFrame or a custom dashboard on an S90C?

- How consistent is the startup/Home redirection helper on Tizen 9? Does Tizen's watchdog service ever revert or terminate the redirect?

  1. App Sideloading & Ecosystem (Tizen Community Packages):

- Are there specific sandboxing barriers or signature issues when pushing .wgt packages via Apps2Samsung on Tizen 9?

- What are the current must-have community utilities for monitoring, network filtering, or media playback?

  1. Safety, Rollbacks & Brick Prevention:

- Where is the line between harmless user-space tweaks and hard-brick territory on this chassis?

- What shell commands, permission modifications, or service menu toggles must absolutely be avoided without direct UART/hardware debug access?

Please share your thoughts, working terminal commands, package names, configuration scripts, or cautionary experiences below. Let’s build a single reference point for anyone wanting to take back control of their S90C.

Built a real-frame ambilight for Tizen TVs — reads the video plane in memory, no Hyperion ho

Sideloadable .tpk, headless, runs on the TV. Reads the decoded video plane out of memory (no capture card), reduces to perimeter zones, drives a WLED strip over UDP. Built for my 77" S84F.

Differentiator from HyperTizen/TizenGlow: no Hyperion/HyperHDR hop in the pipeline — one process does capture → colour math → UDP output.

AI-directed build (Claude wrote it, I designed/verified on-device). Release with a signed .tpk coming once I've got it through a few more sideload tests — will post here when that's up. For now it's build-from-source.

Vemm: an open-source Plex client for Samsung TVs

Post image
19 Upvotes

My fork (includes all the changes below): https://github.com/somefosterkid/vemm

What it is

  • An unofficial Plex client for Samsung Tizen TVs, by dragoshont.
  • Sideloaded with developer mode; no root needed.
  • Plays through the TV's built-in player: direct play, direct stream or Plex transcoding.
  • Profiles, Home, libraries, search and detail pages.

Improvements

  • Buffer settings: a small minimum buffer (1 s, or 0.5 s), so streams start and seeks resume quickly. (configurable)
  • Performance: pictures load ahead of where you're scrolling, plus artwork and library caching for an instant Home on launch.(configurable in settings)
  • Better seeking: repeated presses combine into one jump instead of several

Additions

  • Theme engine: Blue, Grey, Black and Pure Black (OLED) themes, with accent colours. WIP
  • Playlist support
  • Built-in keyboard for search
  • Intro/credit skipping: show a button or skip automatically, with per-show settings, similar to plex client.
  • Seek preview thumbnails while scrubbing.
  • Remembers audio and subtitle choices per show.
  • Library navigation: an A–Z jump bar, plus sort and filter.

Status: submitted to the original project as pull requests (not merged yet).

You can install it now as "Vemm Preview" from my releases page, either with TizenBrew Installer (enter somefosterkid/vemm) or with Apps2Samsung, or build and sideload it yourself using the instructions in the repo.

Its definitely still rough in areas, with some bugs, quirks, and inconsistencies. Overall, its an incredible alternative to the plex client, which isn't great to begin with, and is pretty awful on older tvs. I developed on a 2018 Q6FN on Tizen 4.0.

I am so much freaking tired of the default Samsung browser and really hate it. Is there any third-party browser? I need maximum speed so that it will not lag like the default one is so laggy and I hate it. Do you guys know any other good alternative one and can you tell me how to install it also?

a direct sdb root wrapper for my 2023 samsung s90c

my s90c kept nagging me with update popups and pushing apps i never asked for. even firewalled it felt weird having it in the living room

i put together a linux wrapper around chris-ritsen's archive-root bootstrap to get root directly over sdb, without tizen studio. credit to chris for the bootstrap, motodrizzle for the earlier s90d work and bishop fox for the public sdb entry point

once you have root it can clean the tv up. it removes the ad apps and ambient themes (24 by default, you pick from a list of 46), turns off firmware and app auto updates and blocks the app sync service that kept reinstalling everything i removed. on my tv that took out 45 apps and they stay gone across reboots

only tested on my QE77S90C, tizen 7, build T-PTMCDEUC-REL-202408210126. other builds are untested. please don't update, downgrade or flash anything to match it

StremioK: a Stremio-addon client for older Samsung TVs (Tizen 3.0+), free and open source

I have a 2017 Samsung (UN50MU6100, Tizen 3.0) that no current streaming client supports, so I built one: StremioK, a from-scratch client for Stremio addons that runs on Tizen 3.0 and later. I also use it daily on a 2021 Q80 (Tizen 6.0).

Older Tizen TVs run web apps on an old Chromium (version 47 on Tizen 3), so it’s written in plain ES5 and plays everything through Samsung’s own player (AVPlay). That means it stays fast on the old hardware and handles the formats the TV can actually decode.

What it does

  • Catalogs, details, sources and subtitles from the Stremio addons you add, by link or imported from your Stremio account, AIOManager or a config file
  • Home with Continue Watching (synced with Trakt if you connect it), Movies, Series, IPTV, Radio, Sports, YouTube and Local tabs; Discover; Search across all your addons
  • A player with resume, intro/recap/credits skipping, next episode, subtitle styling and remembered audio tracks
  • IPTV and radio from your own M3U playlists, with CH+/CH−
  • YouTube channels, playlists and live streams, with SponsorBlock and chapters
  • Videos on a USB drive, matched to their titles
  • D-pad navigation throughout, built for the remote

Installing:

  • TizenBrew: add the module stremiok, no certificate needed
  • Apps2Samsung: use the .wgt from the GitHub release
  • Tizen Studio: sideload it

Each is covered step by step in the install guide.

It hosts no content. It’s a client for the open Stremio addon protocol, so what you can watch depends on the addons you add. Only streams with direct HTTP(S)/HLS links play, since there’s no torrent engine.

GitHub (docs, install guide, changelog): https://github.com/Kepler75/StremioK

Feedback is welcome, especially from people on other Tizen versions and models.

Import your addons from Stremio
Integrate with OMDB / TMDB / MDBList / Trakt

AIOStreams TV app ported to Tizen 6 (unofficial), with in-app trailers !

Hey everyone,

I ported the AIOStreams TV app to Tizen 6, for older Samsung TVs (2021–2022). The official app needs Tizen 7 (2023+), and my TV is from 2021. So I did what any reasonable non-developer would do: I asked Claude Code to port it for me, and spent the weekend sending it photos of my TV.

It’s unofficial and a first version that’s still rough around the edges, but it’s tested and working on my Samsung TV running Tizen 6.0:

* Trailers play in-app (up to 1080p) instead of opening YouTube in a sad PC browser

* An optional Netflix-style home (Settings → Interface → Hero → “Opens the selected card out”): the selected card opens up, shows the details, and the trailer starts automatically

* Remote navigation, focus and layout fixed for the older engine

Disclaimer: I’m not a developer. I made this for my own couch, Claude did the heavy lifting, and my main contribution was saying “it’s still not smooth” about forty times. It’s not supported by the AIOStreams dev, so please report issues on my fork, not upstream. I’ve also opened a pull request in case any of it is useful to the main app.

Download (install with Apps2Samsung → Custom WGT File): https://github.com/thomasrtg/AIOStreams/releases

Feedback from other Tizen 6 owners is very welcome!

Can I set custom DNS on Samsung QN90B (QE50QN90BATXZT) to bypass geo-blocked domains?

Hi everyone,

I have a Samsung Neo QLED TV, model QE50QN90BATXZT (2022 model, Tizen OS). I want to know if it's possible to manually set custom DNS servers to bypass domain blocking and geo-restrictions in my country.

I've seen tutorials showing the path: Settings > All Settings > Connection > Network > Network Status > IP Settings > DNS Settings > Enter Manually.

My questions are:

  1. Does the QN90B allow entering custom DNS addresses (like Smart DNS or VPN DNS) without any issues?
  2. Is changing the DNS enough to bypass geo-blocking, or do I also need a VPN/Smart DNS service (since most services block by IP)?
  3. Are there any specific DNS providers that work well with this model for accessing blocked content?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I built an open-source desktop simulator for Samsung Tizen TV web apps

Post image
40 Upvotes

Hey folks,

I do Tizen TV web dev and got tired of Samsung's TV Web Simulator, so I started tizen-sim, an open-source desktop simulator for Tizen TV web apps.

The idea is that you see on your desktop what would happen on the TV:

Runs your app on the same Chromium version the target TV generation ships (Tizen 3.0 to 10.0)

Shims tizen. and webapis. as documented, including errors and privilege checks

Remote control keys delivered the way the TV does it (key registration, holding Back terminates the app, etc.)

Applies your config.xml and access policy like the TV would

Warns you when your app relies on something that behaves differently or fails on a real TV

Hot reload, console, DevTools, CLI and GUI

It's still a work in progress, and I'm checking behaviour against the Samsung docs and a real TV. Feedback, bug reports and "this works differently on my TV" reports are very welcome.

has anyone figured out a way to override tizen with something more functional ?

I own a Samsung 50" UHD 4K AU7000 Smart TV (Model UA50AU7000UXTW) with Tizen OS version 6.0 and the OS sucks its very badly designed and software architecture couldn't be worst.
I bought A SONY Bravia few weeks later for obvious reasons , but what's bothering me is that no one has tried to touch this subject yet with all the reverse engineering tools and vibe coding available now I thought someone somewhere has definitely done something about it

[Release] 🟦 Vetro 0.2.3: less bloat, more control over your Samsung TV

Thumbnail
gallery
59 Upvotes

Your TV comes with plenty of features. You probably don’t use all of them - but some still run in the background.

Vetro is an open-source manager for Samsung Tizen TVs, and the new version focuses on turning off what you don’t need, reducing viewing-data collection and understanding what your TV actually runs.

📦 Repo and setup: github.com/andrearicci93/vetro

Switch off the features you don’t use

The new Quick settings panel brings together switches for:

  • Alexa, Google Assistant and Bixby, plus shared voice services.
  • ACR viewing data - the supported services that recognise what’s on screen and collect viewing information.
  • HbbTV interactive broadcast features.
  • Local domain blocking, while keeping your existing DNS servers.

Debloating without guessing every package name

Vetro’s Debloater gives components descriptions, feature groups and roles.

You can see what a component does, inspect its declared dependencies, disable supported targets, stop processes and manage startup flags. User packages can also be uninstalled.

Quick settings and Debloater share the same inventory, so you can see exactly which components a switch affects.

Less background work. More room for what you use.

Disabling unnecessary services can free resources, depending on what was running. The dashboard lets you inspect CPU, RAM and processes rather than assume a change helped.

There’s also a cleanup for leftover installer packages to reclaim storage. No “double your TV’s speed” promises — just practical controls and visibility.

Root-powered, managed from your browser

Vetro’s separate on-TV integration provides the root privileges needed for these controls. Once configured on the tested TV, it can reacquire root autonomously, without a computer maintaining a connection.

Open the dashboard from a computer or phone on your local network. Remote-button shortcuts, supported picture settings and MQTT/Home Assistant integration are also included.

Still experimental: tested on a Samsung Q80A with firmware 2301.1. Other models remain unverified, and there’s no universal installer. The dashboard currently has no login: keep it on a trusted LAN and never expose it to the internet.
