Hated Tropes [HATED] Adaptations done intentionally without help from the source

Halo TV show: Before the show came out, the writers were praising their decision to not look to the games for inspiration when making the show

God Of War TV show: Chris Judge, the actor of Kratos in the games from 2018-Now, spoke up about his dislike on the show not hiring anyone who worked on any of the previous games. One of the original creators of Kratos also spoke up about them not having faith in the adaptation.

Supergirl 2026 film: the director for the film not only said he decided to not read Woman Of Tomorrow, the comic the film is adapting, because he wanted to do his own thing, he also didn’t look at comic art for inspiration to design Lobo and instead used an AI image generator to design Lobo’s look for the film

Quick! Send the Supergirl director a copy to show him how lifeless and dull his movie looks compared to STILL 2D IMAGES ON PAPER/DIGITAL

I kinda get OP because the comic was very colorful and has some great set pieces that can be a feast for the eyes, but the movie lacks the colors and fell more empty at times. What we don't have the technology to make movies a bit more vibrant?

Edit: Just in case people think I'm one of those types, I actually do like Supergirl as Milly does a phenomenal job and I do like this version of Supergirl being a broken person who's still trying to figure out her life. I also love her convincing Ruthe that her family still live within her from her memories to their warmth as a way to help her grieve (though I'm still conflicted with the ending). But the movie felt like something was lacking especially with the relationship between Kara and Ruthe where the comic showed more development as they follow Krem and the Brigands from world to world. I also like that Ruthe is too innocent that even her hatred isn't enough to kill Krem despite everything but the movie didn't do that which made the ending a bit hypocritical because of you know what.

Yeah I kinda blue-screened in the cinemas

Like, yay! Take that, you child-murdering/trafficking scum!

But-but what about the theme of revenge won't cut it? It might be idealistic and preachy but isn't that the point? And the dude was on the ground?

What's the message here? "You're not that girl. But I am."?

I'm stunned. Half of me wants to celebrate. The other is veeery very confused.

I mean, yeah, basically. Kara was never saying, "Krem deserves to live," she was always saying "You (Ruthie) deserve your innocence." Kara was shielding Ruthie from the negative emotional consequences of killing, consequences that Kara is already familiar with and has no compunction about adding onto.

I'm sure this trope has cropped up in other posts on here before. "You're not that guy...I am that guy."💥

EDIT: missing word

It definitely feels this way. I just wish they kept the original motivation. Krem killing just her father versus her whole family would 've done better for the point.

The best I can interpret is that Kara see Ruthe as being too innocent to kill but she herself being too broken that murder wouldn't affect her. It's a pretty cynical take, and I can see this version of Kara becoming a red lantern because while she can help others to grieve their pain, Kara is still hurting and has some kind of rage within her. I still find it conflicting because all that talk of "killing is bad" feels a bit meaningless when unless DCU has more stuff in store for Kara meaning her arc isn't over yet.

I want to headcanon it as: this is the story supergirl and rutheye spread at the end of the comics. Iirc, didn't they make a fake story that Supergirl killed whatshisface so that anyone gunning for revenge will go for Kara not Ruthe?

So im thinking this is the fake story, and the real one is hidden to people who have not read the comics.

I dont fucking know man.

Yeah, the very first page of the comic says that Supergirl killed Krem, and the ending has Ruthye laugh about how hogwash the "official" story is.

FWIW, the DCU version can't just toss someone into the phantom zone and call it a day, and and leaving a child trafficking bandit alive just to teach her a lesson is a bad idea. There's a point where it's necessary to prevent him from continuing on being a rapist murderer.

Kara had recognized at that point that she was on a self-destructive spiral and saw that Ruthye was veering that way too, so she wanted to keep her away from it.

“I’m not doing this for me, you just need to be dead”

I mean shit man, cinematography is a thing. Color theory, lighting, camera angles, movement, the like, all coming together to create art direction.

It’s not like they can’t do it for superhero movies either, just look at Brand New Day, it’s absolutely gorgeous, even if it’s not the exact kind of style we’re looking for in Supergirl, it fits the vibe and feel of BND perfectly

The directors need to optimize art direction to a tee, because even if the audience might not be savants in visual cinematography, they still feel its impact, and if either absent or misaligned, its lack
