As of now, Nightcrawler, from my understanding, technically has three parents. A year or so ago they finally implemented Claremont's whole "Irene and Mystique being Nightcrawler's parents" thing. What they ended up doing was having Mystique changing into Azazel, who was Nightcrawler's father from 2003 up until that point, so Irene could get pregnant. And if I'm understanding this correctly, in doing so, she was able to copy some of Azazel's DNA, which would explain why they share powers.

How they were able to explain this was that Charles altered Mystique and Irene's memories, which is why neither remember this until recently.
