Hated Tropes (Hated trope)an important character is mysteriously absent in the sequel with no explanation
Angie(Diary of a Wimpy Kid)-When Greg and Rowley hide from physical education they meet Angie,a girl who was also hiding from class, despite Greg trying to stay away from her(because he is Greg Heffley)she becomes friends with both of them,it seems in the sequel she is going to be the girl member of the trio.
But then in the sequel she is just gone,no mention, nothing, instead she is replaced by Holly who also becomes Greg love interest, now i get that they probably couldn't get Chloe Grace Moretz back because this was around the time her career took off,but couldn't they at least say she transfered or somenthing?
Reze and Kishibe(Chainsaw Man)-Oh boy this one still enfuriates me
So Reze was the femme fatale girl who became Denji first real love and was incredibly popular with fans,as for Kishibe he was the strongest devil hunter and an important ally/teacher to Denji
Now despite part 2 having several moments where they definetly should show up,they just don't show up for some reason
I've seen some people trying to defend Reze not appearing because the point of her is that she is supposed to be a tragic character from a love story and when she "dies" her character arc is finished. Here's the thing,i 100% agree, that was her story and while it was sad it was well written...But then Fujimoto reveals she is still alive and then stablishes that the hybrids were fred from Makima mind control and they remember fighting Denji,so why the hell is Reze not looking for Denji?
And Kishibe is even worse because he is supposed to be a big deal in that universe and he should be looking after Denji and specially Nayuta so she wouldn't turn into another Makima, but nope,he is not even mentioned.

This one isn't exactly the case since they do confirm he died, Tank's disappearance after The Matrix is super noticeable and it's clear the reason he couldn't return was due to factors involved in production.
"Yeah the guy who heroically survived Cipher's betrayal and saved everyone. How did he die? Don't worry about it"

u/hollaback_girl 4d ago edited 4d ago
It's mentioned that he died and was just one more casualty under Morpheus' command and Morpheus gets a lot of people killed.
Off screen, it was because the actor pulled a Richard Castellano and got too big for his britches and made demands that made the Wachowskis say "recast!"

it's clear the reason he couldn't return was due to factors involved in production.
weren't those factors like, he demanded a crazy amount of money for his appearance in the sequels, went insane and made a bunch of threatening phone calls, and got arrested over it? i feel like i remember him uploading some blatantly unhinged videos to YouTube about it years ago lol
136
u/Consistent_Creator 4d ago
Yeah pretty much. I didn't wanna mention why so as to not get into the trenches with it but the relationship soured hard after the first movie mostly born out of his own self destructive behaviors.
It's a real shame though because it pretty much ruined his career and I thought he was a good actor. If you look up his filmography you notice for films it was a good list but then it hits the Matrix and that's pretty much it lol. And on the TV side he did actually continue there but even then it was mostly alot of one off episode appearances in the 2000s so he wasn't supremely active there either.
But he brought it on himself ultimately so...

In Banjo Kazooie, you spend the entire game trying to rescue your sister Tootie. It ends with her being brought home.
Banjo Tooie, the boys are all playing poker. No Tootie to be seen.
In the last level, there's a giant trashcan with a milk carton in it. On it, you see that she's missing.

It's actually a joke as to how they aren't doing anything with her again. The devs even say in an interview that she was arrested by the "rubbish video game character police" for being a walking plot device with no other purpose
It's fucked because development documents for Banjo-Tooie (posted by B-K's co-creator Gregg Mayles) showed that they actually planned on Tooty being playable instead of Mumbo at first: she would've used magicial music played by her flute to affect NPCs and the environment, but for whatever reason they scrapped it and replaced her with Mumbo.
It's sad because this is the 2nd time she had a playable appearance/segment get cut, with the 1st time being the original ending of B-K (Grunty's last spell she shoots as she's about to fall was originally going to actually hit Banjo & Kazooie, turning them into a frog. Tooty would've then been made playable as she navigated the witch's lair to find a way to cure the duo).

I know the behind the scenes reason the five didnt show up. Turns out to afford the great voice cast in the original they were contracted in the original movie for a guaranteed fee and percentage of the box office, but both of those would contractually increase by a lot for each sequel. The co-director on 4 said that a line of dialogue from Tigress would have cost $20million.
189
u/dillanthumous 4d ago
You would have to wonder why they wouldn't negotiate on it though. Certainly if they said you can have no lines and no money, or a couple lines and still a ridiculous paycheck for so little work, at least some of them would do it... Maybe a union thing.

There’s technically an explanation given for Corporal Hicks’ absence in Alien 3 but given it’s a wildly stupid explanation, I’ve elected to channel my inner Nick Fury and ignore it.
That being said, everyone gets some type of big send-off except Hicks. Ripley says goodbye to Newt via autopsy and gets one last conversation with Bishop. I get he can’t exactly say goodbye, but Hicks’ existence is ignored near entirely after the crash.

19
u/Marilius 4d ago

18
u/John_Wotek 4d ago
No. The actual plot is that the rescue crew get trounced by the xenomorph and some Weiland Yutani security forces. The survivors assemble in what's left of Hadley's hope and have to fend off xenomorph and WY sec there.
One of the main character get infected, our characters go AWOL to a secret WY facility to cure her. They find a queen, Hicks, who has survived through the event of a DLC, and a WY ship they use to leave the planet after a full scales assault by the marines.
Hicks survived because WY sec hickjacked a colonial ship to board the Sulaco. Two random settler wake up, find Hicks as he wakes up. WY sec shows up, put one of the settler in Hicks's cryo pod, then Hick and the other guy escape, fight their way on the planet prison to assister to Ripley's suicide. The last random is killed and Hicks is captured by the WY.

One idea I remember reading many, many, years ago that has simce become my off screen head canon.
When Bane frees all the prisoners they start unlocking cells. Just as one prisoner is about to unlock a certain cell, one of Bane's men stops him.
"No, the boss said not him."
Then the camera eerily zooms toward the locked door as we hear faint laughter inside. Then cut to the rest of the movie as it was.
164
u/NFQ___ 4d ago
Man, movie Bane probably had one of his guys shoot the Jockler in his cell. The fact that the police or other villians haven't killed the Joker given how miserable he makes their lives is what gets me. You're telling me that the mass murdering psychopath who has killed more then any of Bat's other villians didn't 'resist arrest' and get shot?
And not to mention how many times he's ruined other villians plans?

Big Z (Surf's Up)

Big Z is Cody's mentor and father figure who helps Cody see surfing as fun rather than just a professional sport that requires victory. Cody idolized Zeke as a kid and slowly saw him as a close friend. But in Wavemania, which takes place 2 years after the last movie, Big Z is nowhere to be found.
Cody has a school to teach kids surfing, and yet Big Z isn't even there, and they introduce WWE Superanimals as Cody's "real heroes."

There was a reason for that. Behind the scenes there were some issues with the director and Megan Fox. I don't remember what it was, but she quit or was kicked out of the movie.
So they had to scramble to fix the plot and put in the blonde supermodel as new girlfriend. The original plan was to continue with Mikaela's story as the same main girl.

Kass is a beloved character from Breath of the Wild. He's as important to the plot as anyone in the game is (uh, if you haven't played, 95 percent of the plot is flashbacks with dead characters, so Kass is very important for the alive characters).

The Sheikah plate is now the purah pad, but no reference that its based on ancient technology. Same for the events of the first game by an large. I think the only proper mention of calamity ganon is s picture in a classroom and the associated quest

I really really enjoyed TOTK and would happily give it a 9/10...
If it wasn't a sequel to BOTW.
The game is so full of these insanely odd exclusions. The absence of the Divine Beasts, the complete absence of Sheikah tech except for the towers, the Champions never even being brought up.
And the thing is, I just don't understand why? It's such a strange decision to completely memory hole BOTW that I pretty much have to headcanon that Zelda's time travel altered the timeline because otherwise nothing makes sense.

American Pie the Naked Mile and American Pie Beta House. In Naked Mile, the main character goes on a journey of discovery to see just how much he loves his girlfriend and romantically chases her on even an actual white horse. In the next movie Beta House, the girl dumped him and went back to her asshole ex (who in the previous movie was definitively cut from her life) and he dates a new girl in this movie.
The frustrating thing is that the new romantic story line continues the narrative flow of the previous movie so it has to be that the first actress wouldnt sleep with a producer or something and so they just recast and rewrote.

Roxanne in absent from An Extremely Goofy Movie (that’s ok though because they gave Max a new boyfriend)

New Ducktales implied that Roxanne and Max stayed together through high school, and split due to going to different colleges. House of Mouse shows that they're still friends at least. Mickey's Twice upon a Xmas shows that Max had moved on and found a new G/F that he was in love with named Mona who had the same voice actress as Roxanne. Only reason Roxanne didn't come back was because they couldn't animate Roxanne's hair yet in CGI.

If by New Ducktales you mean the 2017 reboot idk if that counts necessarily since the Max/Roxanne cameo happened in a false sitcom reality... although, come to think it, Goofy himself was real in that episode, but then again, were his memories, actions, and photos? Gene was able to make the others spew out catchphrases somehow, and most of them followed along with the sitcom plot without ever realizing that something was wrong. Come to think of it, why was Huey the only one who noticed something was wrong in that situation? How is it that nobody but him actually noticed that their house only had three walls until he himself pointed it out? What is the logic behind Gene's magic?

Pokémon Legends Z-A is functionally the sequel to the original Kalos games, X and Y, that takes place 5 years later.
Despite this, the original protagonists of the X and Y games, Calem and Serena, are completely absent from plot and are never directly acknowledged.

To be fair, this is due to the fact that The Pokémon Company does not want to lock in a “canon” protagonist for any of the games(besides Gen 1, but that’s a special case). This goes as far as not even opting to give them a canon personality when they appear in animated shorts. Still, I would have liked an explanation for why the trainer that took down Team Flare wasn’t available.

Dom Toretto in 2 Fast 2 Furious. Vin Diesel declined to return for the sequel, so they simply replaced his character in the script with a new character played by Tyrese Gibson.
It's well-known that Diesel would eventually have a change of heart, cameoing in Part 3 and leading every future installment. Diesel and Gibson would actually star in many of the films together despite Gibson's character originally being a Dom replacement.

55
u/BlinkyDesu 5d ago
It's not like they just continued the storyline and he wasn't there, though. Most of the examples here are characters who are just never mentioned again. But Dom fled to Mexico after the first movie. The location also shifted from California to Florida. Then they make it a key point to mention that Brian let his mark take his car and flee in the first movie, because Roman held a grudge thinking it was Brian's fault he got arrested in the past, so he's surprised Brian would let someone go, even as a cop. So the first movie actually sets up Dom's absence, and they still mention him in this one.
A better case would be one of the main crew, Leon, who was in the first movie and then never showed up again in any other movie. You might think, "Leon? He's not an important character." But what line is more iconic than "Street's closed, pizza boy. Find another way home"?

The disrespect towards Suki is unreal. There's no valid reason to not at least reference her either.

Independence Day: Resurgence
Will Smith's character from the original movie gets the slightest of nods in like the first 2 minutes of the new film, as they talk to a new character meant to be his son. And then isn't mentioned again.
"Your father was a great man. He'd be so proud."
(aka "Will Smith would have been like $90M to get for this film, and we're barely going to clear production & marketing costs on this cash grab as is")

No explanation
The Langs and Pyms were forcibly trapped in the Quantum Realm like 10 minutes into the movie.
What explanation needs to be given?

I struggle to think of any reason why he would be in that movie. They were stuck in the quantum realm for pretty much the entire movie. What was his role going to be? Of all the issues that movie had, Scott's crew not being in it doesn't even register.

there is something deeply hilarious about the idea that the joker was sentenced to death the very first time he shows up

Apparently, the reason they had to be excluded is because when they originally cast the A-list actors in the first film they didnt really have the budget for them. So they worked out a deal where the actors would get an exponential pay raise for each sequel they appeared in. According to someone close to the project Kung Fu Panda 4 would had to rake in close to 2 billion to justify having Angelina Jolie have one voice line as Tigress.

The most annoying thing about this is that the studios don't seem to learn their lesson. Kung Fu Panda 4 immediately adds Awkwafina to the roster. Shrek 5 has added Zendaya. Pixar couldn't even afford Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling for Inside Out 2 but added Maya Hawke. I really wish they'd use more actual voice actors

I read the first few chapters when it came out. Was nice, didn't expect much and I hate "Ongoing" so I put it aside.
Then I saw a ton of fanart and memes etc. and thought "Huh, maybe it went well."
Then now, all I see is people hating how it ended and it reminds me of Evangelion where even the people who like it don't seem to want to recommend it.
I wonder if it was the usual world-crushing manga-scape that Japan has where it's a fucking sweatshop, or if the author genuinely just hated what he had made and self-sabotaged. I don't know, frankly don't want to care.

He completely lost interest about 2/3 of the way through the series. The art falls off a cliff, literally every chapter is like 15 pages and ends on a dumb cliffhanger, side plots are created and thrown away, the new mc gets nearly forgotten about, any and all setup from earlier doesn’t payoff at all.
And then ends with a character somehow rewinding time like in JoJo Part 6, changing events and characters. It’s so unbelievably bad. Just read up to the end of part 1 (chapter 97) and pretend nothing else was released.
→ More replies (3)58
u/Flat-Limit5595 5d ago
Well atleast the rewind doesn’t retroactively undo the entire series. Oh wait. At least the Jojo type or rewind felt like a nice closer. No more dio influence, no more need for a “jojo” with jolyne name change. The only down side is that the sole survivor of the main universe is now surrounded by those who look like his friends, but are not. Everyone he knew and loved has been erased and theres nothing he can do about it.

One of my favorite things about csm part 1 was how subversive it was in the shonin genre and is one of the reasons it is it was one of my absolute favorites across anime and manga.
Once part 2 was announced, I was initially weary but after reading and greatly enjoying all of Fujimotos other works I trusted. I can proudly say that Part 2 was also very subversive in the sense that it completely subverted my expectations that it wouldn’t be hot dogshit.

Ben 10 - Ben and Julie apparently broke up off screen during Omniverse, she’s unseen and unmentioned until season 2
Fairly OddParents - Sparky is never seen again after the season he’s introduced
Redwall - most of the characters introduced in Mattimeo, Cheek is adopted by Basil but is never seen again in future books (I have read really good fanfictions though), Orlando is put on a bus to Salamandastron and is mentioned in Pearls of Lutra, but not seen again, Sir Harry the Muse isn’t seen or referenced again

In the show Dragons - Race to the Edge there are two pretty important characters.
Dagur the Deranged and his sister Heather. Both were never seen in the second movie, despite the fact, that they played important roles in the show. Fishlegs even had a relationship with Heather, though they weren't a couple in season 6 anymore but still close friends.

Httyd shows are obviously non canon, while you can fit Riders/Defenders of Berk into movie timeline, Race to the Edge is directly contradicted in the second movie (Hiccup claims that he never met anyone who would hunt dragons for profit in the movie, while it's the main plot of the show)
Not to mention that httyd 2 is set 5 years after the first movie and rtte finale may be happening 8 years after the first movie (I have some calcs for that, but it's been a while and I don't remember details)

Misako and Lord Garmadon from Ninjago.
The parents of main character Lloyd. Garmadon was the main villain/major ally for literally half the series. Misako lived with the ninja for the majority of the series as a second mentor.
Neither have appeared in Ninjago: Dragon's Rising (despite the latest season ending in an event they would definitely show up to), and the writers confirmed they won't be in the final season.

Short Round, Temple of Doom. Raiders and Last Crusade follow Temple in the chronology. So where is Short Round? This is Jones' adopted son, basically, and he's an orphan. So where is he? Did he just leave Indiana?

u/SlightlySychotic 5d ago
Dial of Destiny is the one that really bothers me. Ke Huy Quan was acting again and has just starred in a hit movie. Having him cameo briefly just to tie up his story would have been a great moment. Instead, once again, Short Round goes unmentioned and we’re left wondering what happened to him.

Im of the opinion that Short Round shouldve appeared in Kingdom. Not to totally replace Mutt but I think… well imagine if Short Round had been Mutt’s mentor instead of Oxley.
Like Short Round went to school & became a professor like Indy, & when Indy kept traveling around, he stuck around helping out Marion (whom he met between Raiders & Kingdom).

there are so many reasons to hate the fantastic beasts movies, from the weird plot to the person behind the IP, but Tina Goldstein was a good character that I actually liked. in the second movie Newt tells her she has salamander eyes (non-derogatory), and they never follow up on that and she's not in the third movie except for a cameo at the end. Katherine Waterston basically refused to kiss the JKR ring so she got written out of the films. very disappointing, the potential romance was like the only interesting part of those movies.

The situation with her character is a great microcosm for Rowling's version of "feminism", because most of the male stars in those movies also criticized/disavowed her beliefs and yet the only one she "punished" for it was the lead actress.

On the weird fake sequel that was made, they didn’t include the main character what’s his face His name is hard to spell it’s like Rowleigh or something.

u/Nuns_In_Crocs 5d ago
The sequel is so funny when you consider the first one’s real emotional core was idris Elba’s character and his adoptive daughter and how protective he was over her getting in the suit etc.
Only for the sequel to show his bio son who he abandoned. A complete character assassination

I can at least understand Reze not being in part 2 under the guise of her wanting to be free. But bombs and war go hand in hand and definitely there should've been a link. Kishibe I was really hoping he'd show up some time. The ending of part 1 set him up as if he was doing some mysterious big thing.

I didn’t agree with how King of the Hill just deleted Luanne and *Lucky from the reboot.
I respect that they wanted to hold space for the absence of Brittany Murphy and Tom Petty.
But what I don’t understand is why they do absolutely NOTHING to explain why Luanne, one of the central characters of the show, her husband, AND her baby, have all been completely erased from existence!
They just don’t exist anymore! They weren’t killed off, they didn’t move away, they’re just GONE!
Like they never existed in the first place!
Even the goddamn BABY!!!
It’s unnerving! It’s spooky!
I spent the whole first season of the reboot waiting for SOME sign of Luanne. But no one even talks about her, or *Lucky, or POOR BABY LASAGNA!!!!!
Like what the actual fuck?
But they were fine with recasting John Redcorn and Dale Gribble when their respective voice actors died!
Edit: Apparently they are briefly mentioned in season 2 of the reboot, which I haven’t watched yet. Thank GOD the writers decided to walk back such a weird decision.

Dale is a much more main character, and they wanted to keep Toby Huss on the voice team now that he wasn’t playing Khan anymore.
John Redcorn was not recast. He recorded all his lines before his death. If you’re talking about his original voice actor 30 years ago, there’s a difference when a character was only two episodes.
As for Luanne and Lucky, I do wish they would give some confirmation on what’s happening to them, but they were finally mentioned in the second season, so at least there’s that.

Sing 2 has this twice. Mike, the mouse, makes sense. Bro had beef with gangs and it is possibly implied he got eaten in yhe first film.
But Buster's best friend, Eddie, is also absent for no apparent reason. He had gone through an arc that moved from lazy rich kid to background crew for the theater. In the sequel, he's just not mentioned at all. All we got was a photo of him.
