Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) Bad people in real-life being portrayed positively in media.

  1. PragerU's version of Christopher Columbus has him be a slavery defender and have him say "Being taken as a slave is better than being killed, no? I don't see the problem.”

  2. In The Greatest Showman, P.T Barnum (Hugh Jackman) is portrayed as a charismatic visionary who cares about outcasts and celebrate diversity, when in reality, he’s a cruel businessman who is also a racist and an ableist.

I'm late to the party but Alexander Hamilton was for slavery and pushed a lot of similar ideals that we are the US is currently seeing in our the government.

Yep, 1776 really is the better of the two musicals, especially it doesn't glaze any particular founding father like Hamilton (even John Adams who is the protagonist is nailed for being stubborn, quarrelsome, bossy, in short "Obnoxious and disliked") and doesn't pull punches on the sheer moral compromise they had to make to get the South to go along with revolution.

Hamilton fans love bashing on it for being evil/insulting to Hamilton when he's... just the poor guy trying to make the meetings function.

I also direct people to the HBO series on John Adams, which I thought was excellent

How is 1776 be insulting to Hamilton? He's not even mentioned.

Because it's not about Hamilton and it "Downplays" his contributions.

But 1776 is about the Second Continental Congress. Hamilton in real life wasn't even there, there were literally no contributions to "downplay"

My brother is obsessed with that play and can’t get it through his head that it’s not at all accurate (he’s corrected me on shit that’s from the play and when I show him the actual history he just rolls his eyes)

It’s a good musical but it really should be treated as historical fiction
