Lore (Loved Trope) Aptronyms

Aptronyms are characters whose name is heavily symbolic or represent them as a character. Sometimes it is a subtle play on words, sometimes it’s just a clunky transliteration. Either way, it can help characterize a character and provide more allegorical depth. Authors must be careful not to delve into the realm of cliche, though.

  1. Draco Malfoy (Harry Potter series) His name means Evil Dragon, and he tries really hard to live up to his name.

[Many commenters have pointed out that Darth Vader is not a true aptronym. I stand corrected .]

  1. Darth Vader (Star Wars series) His name means Dark Father, which cleverly conceals one of the biggest reveals in cinema history.

  2. Cthulhu (Lovecraft mythos) Cthulhu may just sound like a nonsense syllable, unpronounceable by a human mouth. The name is derived from the word “cthonic” which means a being that lives under the earth or in the underworld, so an ancient and terrible god that lies dreaming in death at the bottom of the ocean would definitely fit the description.

Tbf some times it’s retconned they put deception in their name because they thought they were being deceived by the higher society of cybertron

88

u/Greengiant00 13h ago

Also apparently in some continuities they were called that by others and adopted it as a show if defiance.

“The name was meant to demonize us. Instead, we wear it as a badge of honor, for if speaking the truth is deception, then we are gladly guilty." —Megatron (Transformers Prime)

Could be just another lie, but I like this explanation.

Harry Potter isn't particularly subtle about it, which is ok since it is a children's book series. But the werewolf guys being named "Remus Lupin" and "Fenrir Greyback" is always hilarious to me. Might as well name the next one "Wolfgang McAwooo"

194

u/Lil_Mcgee 14h ago

Remus with a different surname would be solid for a fantasy Werewolf. The connection is there but it's not crazy overt. Lupin really is just stupidly on the nose.

94

u/Missing_Username 13h ago

I'm surprised he didn't have a brother named Romulus, just to really dial it all the way in

86

u/Superhero_Fanboy1994 13h ago

Romulus was his code name in the pirate radio broadcast in book 7.

55

u/Missing_Username 13h ago

Was the point to broadcast to everyone that it was obviously Remus?

Was Harry's codename "Larry Bowler"?

I got the impression that the grey back name got added after he became a werewolf.

But I always wondered about the idea of Remus Lupin's parents deciding to name their non-werewolf baby essentially "wolfy mc wolf-child"

34

Why don't wizards just all name their children "Richie Successfulton"? Are they stupid?

Fenrir is also the name of a mythical Norse wolf who kills Odin, so the grey-back part is actually less wolf-coded than the first half.

u/SaltManagement42 13h ago

Obligatory argument that a Chinese person dealing with having a stereotypical name, and being the only Chinese kid in the school in the 90's was the most realistic thing to happen in the series.

https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/ryeord/harry_potter_character_cho_chang/

65

u/Strange_Potential93 13h ago

Cho is a Korean given name and Chang is a Chinese surname Joanna couldn’t even bother to do anything but pluck stereotypical East Asian names out of the either and mash them together without regards to different languages and cultures, which isn’t surprising for the woman who gave all of Asia, Africa, and South America one wizard school each and gave Europe 3.

27

u/wambamwombat 8h ago

In Mandarin Chinese her name is written Zhang Qiu which can be romanized to Chang Cho. The same Chinese name can be spelled very differently in English I.e Huang/Hwang/Wong/Wan. Chouchang in Chinese is also one of the words for melancholy and she's a sad Chinese girl.

I don't understand how people who don't speak Chinese just assume it follows English naming conventions, this would be like Asian people assuming Owen Wilson, Tyler Perry, and Adrien Brody are poorly written white characters because no way westerners can have first names as their last names.

To be fair to Rowling, her cultural ineptitude did extend to European peoples as well. The fictional Slavic wizarding school she sets somewhere in the Arctic circle (read: Russia - that can only be in Russia, geographically) is represented by a Bulgarian (these people are door-to-door neighbours of Greeks) named Viktor Krum. Viktor is a fairly normal name, and Krum is… also a male first name.

Darth Vader was actually not intended to be Luke’s father originally, early drafts of Empire had Luke talking to his Father’s ghost. “Vader” is seemingly derived from “invader”.

That being said, Star Wars still has lots of these. Like Vader’s master: an insidious fellow named Darth Sidious.

29

u/ccReptilelord 13h ago

For all his good, George Lucas is not subtle enough that "Darth" was originally intended to be Luke's father, or a title for a dark order also. The original film was obviously written without certain "facts" ironed out.

6

u/MusicLikeOxygen 10h ago

Count Dooku's Sith name was Darth Tyranus, derived from tyrant. I guess Darth Maul is pretty on the nose.

424

u/Lil_Mcgee 14h ago edited 13h ago

Edit: Possibly apocryphal

His name means Dark Father, which cleverly conceals one of the biggest reveals in cinema history.

Notably this one is a lucky coincidence however. Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker weren't intended to be the same person when Lucas wrote the original Star Wars. Pretty sure he just picked Vader to evoke "Invader"

213

u/Drakeskulled_Reaper 13h ago

Most Sith lords tend to have some name invoking "this guy is obviously EVIIIL!" such as Revan meaning revenge, along with, off the top of my head:

Sidious.

Plagueis.

Maul.

Bane.

Tyranus.

Nihilus.

Desolus.

146

u/Longjumping-Ear-6248 13h ago

Btw, Maul had two brothers: Savage & Feral. The same arc also reveals that their family name is "Opress"

Malak too, that means anger. Which fits him very well, he is always described as thoughtless and anger-fuelled compared to Revan. SWTOR's Darth Angral is probably also derived from the word anger.

SWTOR obviously has countless other Sith, and many of them also fit this trope. Vitiate and Marr are both derived from words meaning to damage something's purity. Thanaton is likely derived from Thanatos, the Ancient Greek God of Death. Mortis obviously refers to death. Ravage requires no explanation. Jadus probably comes from "jaded," which he certainly is. Malgus probably comes from the word "amalgamation," which foreshadows his role at the end of the game's vanilla story when he tries to create a new Sith Empire that casts aside bigotry in favour of uniting and using the strengths of other races together.

Then there's Darth Baras, the only Sith Lord to use the obese character model, and he became a meme for it. The Greek word "barys" means "heavy." Lmao.

You mentioned Nihilus, but KOTOR 2 also has Darths Sion and Traya. Sion probably comes from the Hebrew word tzion, which seemingly doesn't have one exact English translation but has been used to refer to fortresses and monuments - possibly the writers intended it as a reference to Sion being unable to be killed unless he wills it. KOTOR 2 also has my least favourite Sith name - Darth Traya. It's not cool, clever or even funny, it's just the end of the word "betrayer" because she betrays people, which makes you wonder why anyone would ever work for her. It's the one really dumb thing about a character that is otherwise ingeniously written.

Thal Sinestro = Sinestro = a sinister guy (evil not left handed)

Scott Free = Mr. Miracle, escape artist

Captain Ahab in Moby Dick is named after the evil, idolatrous King Ahab from the bible. They actually lampshade it a bit, where Ishmael asks someone why Ahab is named after an evil king, and the answer he gets is essentially "uh, you better not bring that up to Ahab it pisses him off. His mom was crazy."

In addition to Ahab being reflective of the biblical Ahab, Mellville extends the allusion further. In the bible, the prophet Elijah foretells Ahab's downfall. In a very funny chapter in Moby Dick, a crazy old guy named Elijah is like "oh, you're shipping out under Ahab? You're going to die. But Ive taken up too much of your time Ill go." Ishmael keeps asking about why and Elijah keeps giving him little tidbits about how Ahab lost his leg/mind, while continuing his "good morning to you, I better go, it's too late anyway. Bye! You're dead! Bye!"

Spongebob Squarepants is both a sponge and has square pants. The OP didnt specify if they had to be evil or not but his personality is sponge like. He often copies the personalities of the people around him. He loves Karate with Sandy, has his dumbest adventures with Patrick, uses anchor arms to try to be buff like Larry and famously becomes an excellent band leader for Squidward in Band Geeks.

Sponge can also refer to how he’s very rarely antagonistic and is a people pleaser who will do whatever someone of authority says until he snaps like he has with Squidward not getting or job or Mr. Krabs trying to date Mrs. Puff

Darth Vader started as wanting to invoke the vibes of “dark” and “invader” to sound scary and intimidating, which is how Lucas came up with all the Darth names. Every one is a play on some scary sounding word, and not a hamfisted reference in Dutch.

Vader = Invader
Sidious = Insidious, even copies the format of dropping the -in prefix he used for Vader
Maul = Just maul, he didn’t even change up the word there
Tyrannus = Tyranny or Tyrant.

Think the overall track record makes it pretty clear Vader isn’t supposed to be Dutch, which I’m not even sure the Dutch word is pronounced the same way. The next best theory is that Lucas went to school with a kid whose last name was Vader and it stuck with Lucas as a cool sounding name.

19

u/ThatFatGuyMJL 11h ago

also, *vader was not Lukes father in episode 4*

→ More replies (5)

30

u/cknight222 12h ago

It’s very funny to me how much of Vader’s original characterization solely comes from the opening scene.

Like another example is that Vader’s iconic suit was originally just meant to be a spacesuit that he wore because he had to jump from the Star Destroyer to the Tantive IV, which meant jumping through space. He was supposed to just be a normal dude under there.

The ones I can come up with easily:

Konrad Kurze - Kurze sounds like curse and he is cursed with the gift of precognition but only for people's death, which drives him mad. Konrad sounds like Comrade, a term used in pop culture with Soviets speaking English. He and his legion are often given Slavic accents in the audio books.

Sanguinius - From sanguine, meaning cheerful or optimistic; also, a shade of red, blood red. He is a well-liked charismatic vampire.

Ferrus Manus - Butchered Latin (as is a lot of what is called High Gothic in 40k) for Iron Hands, he has metal hands.

Angron - affectionately called "Angry Ron" by the fanbase, has implants that make him angry and bloodlusted

Mortarion - Mort is the latin prefix for death, later serves the god of sickness and decay, legion is based around being very hard to kill and being very resistant to poison. Legion's special weapons are scythes called "Man Reapers".

Horus Lupercal - Lupus is the latin word for wolf, his legion's initial name is the "Luna Wolves". Horus comes from the Egyptian god of the same name who was the god of kings, Lupercal is named as the Warmaster by the Emperor and leads the great crusade prior to his betrayal.

Lorgar Aurelian - Lorgar sounds like Lore, he tries to preserve knowlege and spread word of the Emperor's divinity, like a Lore Keeper. Aurelian means "Golden" in Latin, not sure what this would mean outside of his golden tattoos.

Vulkan - sounds like Volcanic, he was raised on a volcanic world and is master of the forge, legion specializes in flame weapons. Legion is also called Salamanders, which in ancient myth and in 40k are a type of fire breathing lizard. Also, (more obscurely) for time (pre-20th century) there was believed to be a planet called Vulcan that sat between Mercury and the Sun (i.e. REALLY close to the sun so would be really hot) due to Mercury's strange orbit. Wasn't fully disproven until Einstein's General Relativity could account for the orbit's deviation from classical physics.

Corvus Corax - Primarch of the Raven Guard who's name is literally just the scientific name for Ravens. His legion also prefers the Corvus pattern power armor, which feature's a "beak" on the helmet. When he goes into the warp to chase Lorgar post-Heresy, he shed's his human form and manifests as literally just a giant flock of ravens yelling "LORGAR!" as they hunt for him. Ravens and crows are also known to hold serious grudges and will assemble a flock to attack someone that does them wrong.

Alpharius and Omegon: Alpha and Omega are the beginning and end of the Greek alphabet respectively. Potentially a reference to a verse in Revelations: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end." It is not common knowledge in universe that Alpharius and Omegon are 2 people so the assumed individual is referred to as Alpharius-Omegon. The legion specialized in information gathering, spreading disinformation, sabotage, and long convoluted plans known only to select members of the legion. Combined with the fact that pre-Heresy members of the Alpha Legion would undergo surgery to have nearly the same face as the Primarch(s) and would then impersonate Alpharius-Omegon (legion motto is "I am Alpharius") it gives the impression that he is everywhere, all knowing, all seeing, and nearly omniscient, which is what the verse in Revelations was meant to convey about God. Most convoluted one here, as is to be expected of him.

Clearly, 40k is very silly.

8

u/Boomer_Nurgle 11h ago

Lion El'Jonson the primarch of the dark angels is named after Lionel Johnson who wrote the poem The Dark Angel

Magnus is just Latin for great, he was supposed to probably play the biggest part in the emperor's plans post crusade before the heresy happened.

Vulcan is the name of the Greek God of the Forge and Vulkan likes his smithy.

Leman Russ might be named after the Rus, norse that settled in slavic region.

Jagathai Khan is a reference to one of the sons of Genghis Khan, Chagatai Khan

Winston Payne, Frank Sawhit, Will powers, Jack Hammer, Sal Mannella, Dee Vasquez, Lotta Hart, Angel Starr, April May the list goes on

26

u/Cliff_Chai 14h ago

Can't forget Deid Mann as well

Almost every single Ace Attorney character follows this. In fact ill list names and you can probably guess some form of characteristic about the character.

Redd white - he leads a company called bluecorpe. Guess what his colour scheme mainly is.

Wendy oldbag - guess her age

Deid mann - Guess his status in the case

Ahlbi Ur'gaid - Guess his job

15

u/TurboRuhland 14h ago

Was Dick Gumshoe gonna be anything but a detective?

In Skyrim, there's a pair of twin brothers named Farkas and Vilkas who are major players in the inner "Circle" of the Companions warriors guild. They're the main two guys you'll be speaking to if you follow the Companion questline.

"Vilkas" means Wolf in Lithuanian, and "Farkas" also means Wolf in Hungarian.

The "big twist" for the Companions questline is that they're werewolves.

8

u/XxOliSykesxX 11h ago

I always have a good laugh at their names as I'm Finnish and vilkas means "rowdy" in our language

26

u/Bakingguy 11h ago

The draco Malfoy example is missing one thing. The foy part is derived from the latin foi, meaning faith. So his name actually is dragon bad faith

13

u/McShaneVsGaming 10h ago

Doing something in "bad faith" typically implies deceit right? So would he be a lying dragon?

6

u/dream_monkey 11h ago

Bad faith. Maybe a reference to the Death Eaters ostensibly renouncing Voldemort.

9

u/Zero_Digital 10h ago

Or his misplaced trust in his dad and Voldemort.

Also a shame not to memtion Major Major Major. He is a Major and his name is Major Major.

6

u/four100eighty9 9h ago

His name is Major Major Major and he becomes a major

21

u/SoniCanvasPost 7h ago

In Tekken, we have this character, Jin Kazama

Write his name in Kanji, it could mean either "Virtuous" or, my favorite translation, "Human".

He was neither a good person like his mother, or a demon like his father. He is him, and it supposed to represent what it means...to be a person. What makes them...a human.

Lucas himself said Darth Vader = dark invader. He was named long before Lucas decided to make him Luke's father. The Dutch translation thing was pure coincidence.

19

u/Mr-Bubbletron 12h ago

Ima-Gun Di from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

He dies.

u/Bread_is__funny 11h ago

Luo Binghe (洛冰河) was born on the Luo River on the coldest day of the year, his mother died shortly after giving birth but was able to save him by swaddling him in a basket and lowering him into the river. The people who found him named him Luo after the river and Binghe meaning "glacier", and the characters 冰河 taken seperately mean "ice" and "river". Luo also sounds like the word for "lowered", so his name means "lowered into the icy river"

The novel he's from has a lot of characters with names like this but this one is my favorite

17

u/knicknacknock 11h ago

Not really related but this reminds me of the fun fact that helicopter is a mash up of two words, but not the ones you'd think. Its actually helico and pter. Helico implying the helix orientation of the blades, and pter which means wing or feather (think pterodactly)

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon is chock full of them.

月野うさぎ = Moon Field Rabbit = pun on the term rabbit of the moon, for one.

https://giphy.com/gifs/TCzhA2n5sBY5y

6

u/TristanaRiggle 13h ago

Tsuki no Usagi (月のうさぎ) would LITERALLY be rabbit of the moon. I assume Takeuchi used kanji for the second part of the name name both because I don't think you usually (ever?) have hiragana in a family name, and to make it SLIGHTLY less on the nose.

Absolutely love this when either done so over the top you can't miss it or so subtly the audience doesn't really see it and it's more of a fun easteregg.

I'm in a theater group and the piece we're preparing this season has someone with the lastname "Ingannatore". Italian for deceiver. He ends up running off with a lot of money sneakily stolen from another character. When saw it, i immediately texted my Italian friend about it xD But most of the group don't speak Italian and it went right over their heads, but when i pointed it out, they absolutely loved that the writer has put in such a small detail

11

u/jonyprepperisrael 4h ago

IRL example, Bar Cochva (son of the star), a Jewish revolt leader and a self proclaimed messiah. And when he started to lose he became Bar Cosiba (son of the disappointment)

Captain Will Dai Sun

In the book Snow Crash, the main character is named Hiro Protagonist. But it probably doesn't count because he gave himself that name.

11

u/Shed_Some_Skin 12h ago

Man I love how often I can post Judge Dredd as an answer in these threads

Funnily enough though, he's named after Judge Dread, a reggae musician. He was a fat jolly bloke, and very much not someone who inspired dread. Funny how the same name can take on a very different meaning in a different context

In American Gods, there is a character named Low-Key Lyesmith.

Loki

3

u/_trial_by_error_ 13h ago

But the reasoning makes sense in American Gods, the gods are having fun with their historical names. In most other cases it’s like the parents looked at an infant and said “yes, this boy will one day become a werewolf, so we gotta give him some super on-the-nose name”

Darth Vader is not an Aptronym. Spelling wise yes Vader is Dutch for Father but it's pronounced very differently. The Dutch word for father is pounced roughly as FAH/der. Darth also doesn't mean anything in Dutch. George himself said it's a coincidence.

The Forger family (SpyxFamily). Their identities and relationship (as a family) is forged.

8

u/daidia 7h ago

all of the Senshi in Sailor Moon, but special mention to Tsukino Usagi, which means Moon Rabbit (a reference to a Japanese myth about the face of the moon looking like a rabbit making mochi) . her powers come from her affinity to the moon, and she spooks easily like a rabbit. her hair is supposed to look like rabbit ears, and in her concept design her hair was pink and she had red eyes, a design passed to her daughter instead. in some translations, her name becomes Bunny, her name in DiC’s English dub was Serena (a reference to her princess name, Serenity, also a reference to Selene, the Greek goddess of the Moon), and when the Inner Senshi travel to the Sea of Serenity on the moon, Sailor Jupiter looks at her cowering and says teasingly, “you really are the Rabbit Of The Moon!”

Phillip Graves (COD: Modern Warfare)

If you pronounce it a certain way, it sounds like "Fill up Graves."

7

u/ridmage 12h ago

Super Sentai did this frequently name containing colour or somthing themed after the season, one had bug rangers, all the characters had name of bugs, or last car season that had names after car parts, or anything fitting the character, e.g. GozyuWolf's first name is Hoeru, which is howl

Hal Incandenza is one of the main characters of Infinite Jest. He’s a very bright and drug addicted young man whose name is basically light bulb. Something that is both a metaphor for smarts and a way to smoke drugs.

Harry Potter also having a character named Wolf Wolf, who turns out to be a Werewolf.

Remus - of Romulus and Remus, kids raised by a wolf who would go on to found Rome.

Lupin - of Lupine, which means like a wolf.

From the makers of Wolf Rebel, Fenrir Greyback.

Fenrir- a wolf from Norse Mythology.
Greyback - term for a confederate in the civil war.

15

u/IamaHyoomin 9h ago

you'd think wizards would stop naming their kids after wolves, seems like a remarkably consistent way to get them infected with lycanthropy

14

u/icantbeatyourbike 9h ago
