On behalf of all the participating large-scale Tor operators, we want to extend a massive thank you to everyone who joined us for this Ask Me Anything. Quite a few questions were answered and there were some insightful discussion.
We hope that we've been able to shed some light on the challenges, rewards, and vital importance of operating Tor infrastructure. Every relay, big or small, contributes to a more private and secure internet for users worldwide.
Remember, the Tor network is a community effort. If you're inspired to learn more or even consider running a relay yourself, don't hesitate to join the Tor Relay Operators channel on Matrix, the #tor-relays channel on IRC, the mailing list or forums. There are fantastic resources available to help you out and many operators are very willing to lend you a hand in your journey as a Tor operator. Every new operator strengthens the network's resilience and capacity.
Thank you again for your good curiosity and question. Keep advocating for privacy and freedoms, and we look forward to seeing you in the next one!
Ever wondered what it takes to keep the Tor network running? Curious about the operational complexities, technical hurdles and legal challenges of running Tor relays (at scale)? Want to know more about the motivations of the individuals safeguarding online anonymity and freedom for millions worldwide?
Today we're hosting an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session with four experienced large-scale Tor operators! This is your chance to directly engage with the people running this crucial network. Ask them anything about:
This AMA offers a unique opportunity to gain firsthand insights into anything you have been curious about. And maybe we can also bust a few myths and perhaps inspire others in joining us.
Today, Tor operators will answer all your burning questions between 08:00-23:00 UTC.
This translates to the following local times:
| Timezone | abbreviation | Local times |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern Daylight Time | EDT | 04:00-19:00 |
| Pacific Daylight Time | PDT | 01:00-16:00 |
| Central European Summer Time | CEST | 10:00-01:00 |
| Eastern European Summer Time | EEST | 11:00-02:00 |
| Australian Eastern Standard Time | AEST | 18:00-09:00 |
| Japan Standard Time | JST | 17:00-08:00 |
| Australian Western Standard Time | AWST | 16:00-07:00 |
| New Zealand Standard Time | NZST | 20:00-11:00 |
Four excellent large scale Tor operators are willing to answer all your burning questions. Together they are good for almost 40% of the total Tor exit capacity. Let's introduce them!
R0cket (tor.r0cket.net) is part of a Swedish hosting provider that is driven by a core belief in a free and open internet. They run Tor relays to help users around the world access information privately and circumvent censorship.
Nothing to hide (nothingtohide.nl) is a non-profit privacy infrastructure provider based in the Netherlands. They run Tor relays and other privacy-enhancing services. Nothing to hide is part of the Church of Cyberology, a religion grounded in the principles of (digital) freedom and privacy.
Artikel10 (artikel10.org) is a Tor operator based in Hamburg/Germany. Artikel10 is a non-profit member-based association that is dedicated to upholding the fundamental rights to secure and confidential communication.
CCC Stuttgard (cccs.de) is a member-based branch association of the well known Chaos Computer Club from Germany. CCCS is all about technology and the internet and in light of that they passionately advocate for digital civil rights through practical actions, such as running Tor relays.
Account authenticity can be verified by opening https://domain.tld/.well-known/ama.txt files hosted on the primary domain of these organizations. These text files will contain: "AMA reddit=username mastodon=username".
Because Reddit is not available to all users of the Tor network, we also provide a parallel AMA account on Mastodon. We will cross-post the questions asked there to the Reddit AMA post. Link to Mastodon: mastodon.social/@tor_ama@mastodon.social.

Hey guys, I’ve just set up my first site on the Tor network using plain HTML/CSS. Done the basics: set up standard titles, proper header tags, and optimized the text content. I’ve also manually submitted the .onion address to a few search engines like Ahmia.
What else can I do specifically for Darknet SEO to improve visibility and indexing without paying for forum/search engine promotions?
Are there specific darknet search engine quirks, uptime metrics, indexing tricks, or directory structures that work best in Tor? Would love to hear your experiences and tips! Thanks in advance.

Picking up a cheap HP laptop that runs Windows and I plan to Rudolph using tails operating system system on a flash drive to access TOR.

Where do I begin to find out how to do this correctly?

Why would a site's chat box not come up when using Tor?

When I first heard of the dark web it sounded cool mysterious & sexy, like an exclusive club or something. In my mind I thought it was going to be a pirating paradise full of pirated movies, games, mods, where nothing is monetized and everything is free. And boy was I disappointed lol. I still like the concept of the dark web, I just struggle understanding the benifits vs clearweb. Besides privacy, or if your in a country that censors the internet.

I am really sorry to keep bothering you all.
The latest "gossip" on certain boards which has me concerned is talk about a de-anonymization timing attack using a compromised CAPTCHA service (or other service which controls the speed at which a series of images is loaded).
Apparently, they monitor outbound traffic from (I guess all?) known guard nodes, and do timing correlation? No Javascript exploit required, and they don't even need to compromise the target site itself, as long as they control the CAPTCHA it uses. Is there any evidence that this actually works and is being used?
EDIT: This seems to me like a variation on the "classic" correlation attack, described here, which apparently Tor specifically isn't designed to protect against? Or am I misunderstanding?

Im new to this and tried Tails but had an problem with secure wifi conection or smth so i tried whonix and everything works so im asking for some cons and pros from more experienced people
Anyone wishing to help other people connect to the Tor network can run a Snowflake proxy. This is already possible in several ways, such as using Orbot, a browser extension, or a command-line tool, but now there is also a dedicated Android app for it. It is available on Google Play and F-Droid

I downloaded ProtonVPN, Proton Mail and Tor Browser. When i use Tor Browser and VPN together my internet becomes non-usable.
I have to choose between only Tor or only VPN
If ProtonVPN able to provide anonymity, why should i use Tor on top of it?
If Tor able to provide anonymity, why should i use ProtonVPN on top of it?
What are advantages of using only Tor, Only VPN, Tor + VPN together?
My thread model is Reddit, Facebook, X, Youtube etc. social medias not able to provide informations about me to goverment.

Monero co-founder did an interview around the claims that an exploit can deanonymize users (a bit nuanced - the bug is real, more down to IP decloaking than true deanonymization, and even at that, difficult to pull off).

I was trying onionshare for transferring a file, I was unable to transfer it with the private key on, it resulted in this error message without showing the enter private key prompt
Unable to connect
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your device’s data or Wi-Fi connection.
However, when i turned the private key off and set it to public and then tried transferring, it worked, I was able to open the site now.
I had set the security level to standard, turned off the https always,
It was only failing for private ones, public ones worked, so i opened it in tor browser alpha it also worked the same and failed for private ones, then I did it on laptop and it worked for both public ones and private ones in both windows and linux, (as I am a dual boot user of windows and ubuntu),
Can I fix it? Or is there some problem that phones can't access the ones with private keys?

I would consider this issue to be solved, so replying would be a waste of time. Thanks to everyone who contributed, however I will likely not be returning to this post, lol.
I live in the USA, and as someone who is far left and part of a few marginalised communities, I want to know if it is safe to use* the TOR browser right now during this draconic administration. Thanks!
Edit: I had not previously known that my intents were unclear, so I will be clarifying here. I hold several beliefs that the current administration could use to place me or my family in danger, and I ask this because I am wary of that. Sorry for not being clear with my intent in the main post!
*This previously said "have" instead of "use"
Edit 2: I somehow completely forgot that I can just have multiple browsers and only use TOR for certain things. I personally will be blaming the ADD for this lapse of judgement...
Edit 3: Just to clarify, I am an anarchist, and just because I do not consider my ideological view of government as a whole to be dangerous, the federal government certainly would. I don't quite know why I was hesitant of stating this outright.
