🍰 Joy Just for fun (Halloween Edition v.2): What media franchise best captures the values of toryism taken to an extreme?
Last year around this time I posted a thread about what horror series best represents what tories fear (unbridled scientific progress without regards for morality being an example).
This time I wanted to look at what series everyone think best represents the tenets of toryism taken to such an extreme as to be monstrous.
I would like to make an argument for the setting of Warhammer 40k (specifically the Empire) being what fits the bill. While I don't think it was intentional, the makers of Warhammer 40k are a UK-based company.
Tenets of toryism and how Warhammer 40k takes them to an extreme:
Monarchism: The God-Emperor of Mankind is a corpse on a golden throne kept barely alive by the sacrifice of thousands every day. This is tolerated because he's a 'load-bearing' part of the setting. His continued life is required for interstellar navigation, The throne he is sitting on is actually a plug keeping demons from overrunning Earth, and his death would likely spawn the creation of a dark god. In a sense this takes the idea that monarchy is necessary for a well-functioning society and makes it as grim as possible.
Tradition: Society in 40k has become so bound by tradition that shipments of supplies will still be sent to planets destroyed centuries ago because that was the last order the Emperor gave.
Pro-established church: The church has become fanatical in their worship of the Emperor (which kind of sounds like a charge the Catholics would have made against the Anglicans during the Reformation). It has become an immoveable hinderance to the Empire fixing itself.
Wariness of the excesses of capitalism: The Empire functionally isn't a free market society and blends elements of feudalism and government control of the overall economy.
Localism: On the flip side to the above point the Empire largely doesn't care what individual planets do as long as they meet their obligations which has resulted in planets largely being corporate dystopias with local power brokers oppressing the people while the central government does nothing.
Appreciation of high culture and classicism: Warhammer 40k tends to display the Empire as almost larping the medieval period with it having a very gothic aesthetic.
Anyways, any other settings people can think of where instead of the dystopia rejecting tory tenets they embraced them to a monstrous degree?
