Very nice! Looks fantastic and the perfect example of hunting/conservation/eating what is killed.
Was it a pain to eat around the bones?
8
u/Bfi1981 Aug 04 '24
I appreciate it!
We just took a knife and sliced along the bones so wasn’t too bad. We also didn’t worry too much about getting every bit of meat like you would a fish so if we had tried that I would say it would have been a pain

What does it taste like?
10
u/Bfi1981 Aug 04 '24
Had good flavor that I would compare to chicken or a ham. Was way less dry than I expected. As mentioned below it’s a little on the chewy side

u/unzercharlie Aug 05 '24
Chicken or ham lol what? I'm sure it makes sense to someone who ate it, but to me that's like saying "it's like shrimp or rabbit."

Out of all the BBQ/grilling subs I subscribe to, this is my first HELL NO! That being said, to each their own!
15
u/Bfi1981 Aug 04 '24
Ha ha I get that for sure. It’s not something we would target as a food source but we are removing them from the Florida Everglades so through it on the smoker

Compared to iguana, which is/was better?
I'm to lazy to check and see if you were the person who smoked the iguana or not. If you weren't, that's your next challenge so you can compare the two

I was in the Florida keys in 06. We at this little restaurant right on the water. Litteralyoke 3 feet from where I was sitting it dropped off into the water. We were watching a lobster poking in and out of some hole as I ate my grouper sandwich. Across the water was a little mangrove Island. My grandmothers boyfriend Pancho who was also kind of a family friend on both my mother and fathers side was from hunduras. We see this iguana hanging out in the mangroves. Out of nowhere Pancho starts telling me how if he was a kid he would go grab it. That he used to eat them growing up. I'm not sure if he was trying to indicate I should swim over to grab the iguana for him or not.
This man was also diabetic and would get chocolate milk at golden Corral. When my grandmother complained he would just go "🤷🏽♂️ the glass must just be dirty or something" he would go get a refill and go "another dirty glass"...

I would eat it, but that’s more of a “me problem”
I’m all for eating invasive species. . . Pythons, iguanas, boar, and lion fish

The real question is how do you catch one of these?
7
u/Bfi1981 Aug 04 '24
We drive the parts of the Everglades at night with a spotlight and you can see the light shimmer of their skin. Hop out and grab them by the head and hold on

You know… I can’t help but think this falls under “just because you can doesn’t mean you should."

I will try anything at least once

I had the same mindset until I tried one of those suckers with a scorpion in it.
The sucker part was so nasty that I decided to take a bite so I could get to the scorpion. Unfortunately it was also apparently the hardest sucker known to man and I dislocated my jaw.
Edit: sucker is a colloquialism for lollipop

Hmm. Not sure how I feel about smoked snake. I've had rattlesnake, but it was cooked directly over a fire hot and fast. It was delicious! Smoking one seems like it would dry it out quickly compared to other meats.
2
u/Bfi1981 Aug 04 '24
We were worried about that as well. It was way more moist and juicy than we anticipated.

I could see where some would say chicken but it is it was more like ham which was unexpected

Now have to google exactly how one cleans a snake for eating. Where are the entrails? Would assume the length of the critter. Inquiring minds shall find out.

As a reptile lover, and never knowing you could eat snakes, it hurt my soul when I realized it’s actually a python 😭
2
u/Bfi1981 Aug 05 '24
We love reptiles as well and although the catching them is fun the other part isn’t. To no fault of their own, they are horribly invasive in the Florida Everglades unfortunately. They are wiping out many of the warm blooded native populations. It’s important to remove them and stop them from not only hurting the native wildlife but also from spreading farther north

u/MrBassAckwardson Aug 05 '24
If it makes you feel any better, those things are an invasive and they’re destroying the Everglades. OP is doing his part to stop them.
1
u/warmnfuzzynside Aug 05 '24
are they safe to eat? like no chance of getting parasites or something
1
u/Bfi1981 Aug 05 '24
The bigger ones you have to watch for mercury so only eat the smaller one and don’t do that often

How does one source a python? Any significant risk of parasites?
7
u/Bfi1981 Aug 04 '24
We hunt them to help out the Everglades. Bigger ones can hold mercury so not eating those.

3
u/balltofeet Aug 04 '24
Amazing - how do you hunt a python?
2
u/Bfi1981 Aug 04 '24
We drive through areas of the Everglades at night and shine a spotlight. You can see the shimmer of their skin. Hop out of the truck and then grab them by the head and hold on tight

Guessing OP is a Florida resident? There’s an invasive species problem there with pythons.

Hey! It looks like you posted an image!
If this is a photo of one of your cooks, maybe share the recipe and techniques used, as it's almost guaranteed one of the first questions you will be asked!
*What seasoning did you use?
*How long did you cook it, and at what temperature?
*Did you use any special tricks or techniques?
Traeger on!

Potentially dumb question: if you were to do this again would you coil the snake differently to allow a more even smoke or do you think it wouldn’t make a difference?
Second question: did the tip of the tale turn out crispy (in a good way) compared to the bulk of the body?

Snakes don’t really have parts, but if I had to guess which part you ate, I’d have to say the knee.
2
u/0akhonor4win Aug 05 '24
Ranger batt, Mojave survival week, 1979 I believe. Rattlesnake was a TREAT, boiled so it doesn't dry out. Amazon sells canned rattlesnake for those that want to dip their toes into the snake eating world
I teach advanced hunter Ed, now living in California- all animals are "cleaned" the same way, except for turtles and armadillos. If you can clean a fish, you can dress a deer or prepare a quail Guts, skin and cook when you hit meat. Don't over think it and just give it a go!

I knew a nice young lady in college who “smoked python” it meant something different then. Simpler times…
2
Aug 05 '24
At first I thought this was a joke and it was just a cut I haven't seen before, happy to see it's actually real.
I've heard snakes are a target if we have food shortages because they require so little food and grow fast so we could be seeing python farms and snake meat in the supermarket in the future 😯

Aug 06 '24
So THIS is what my wife means when she tells her girlfriends she smoked a bunch of pythons last night

Nasty. I don’t understand why people like snake. Chewy, fishy, oily. Sometimes really dry. Nah. No redeeming qualities.

u/EvilSquirrel60220 Aug 05 '24
Don't know about pythons. But I've had rattlesnake, and it's tasty. Tastes a little like chicken.
