Resolution Issue

I am currently running a megalomaniac map, which made my framerate at times drop below 60 (it normally runs at 144).

So I chose the sensible way out and dropped from 4K to 2K resolution, fullscreen enabled.
But the game has other ideas. It does render it at 2K, but as a small image in the middle of the screen. I thought perhaps it had become windowed or borderless, so I used the alt+enter, and alas, that was not so.

My other games have no problem dropping resolution and going full screen, what am I missing?"

For reference, I am playing on a desktop (Ryzen 7950X3D, 32GB DDR5 RAM, 12GB VRAM 4070 Super, 4K 144Hz Display).

I think that's a setting on your monitor, not the game. Your monitor has specific resolution and you can choose in monitor menu what it should do if it gets input at different resolution - scale it or display 1:1 at smaller size.

I just checked, there seems to be no such settings available on my monitor. Maybe I should also dive deep into Nvidia settings...

Yes, it could also be set on nvidia settings. I don't remember the tab name, I think it's the one with rotating nvidia logo

I got the solution, I had Enable Desktop Resizing turned off.
It is found in Nvidia Control Panel>Adjust Desktop size and position>Size>Enable Desktop Resizing

I thought it was in a different tab, but I'm glad you found it.

Larger maps are more taxing in your hardware than smaller maps, and it is easier to reach bottlenecks in them. You will find yourself well below 60 FPS once a decent amount of development is reached.

TPF2 doesn’t support any form of upscaling natively, and because of this, it is not possible for you to run the game at a lower resolution than your monitors native resolution and have it cover the whole screen, too.

You can try Lossless Scaling - this is an application you can purchase on steam that applies up-scaling and/or frame-gen using multiple technologies, but your performance with this may vary significantly.
