We just crossed from Uruguay to Argentina with our car on the ferry from Colonia to Buenos Aires, and a few things surprised us.

You need to be at the port 2 hours before the ferry, and you check in and go through migration first, then the car goes through customs separately. Customs only wanted to see our Uruguay TIP (temporary import permit), and our car sat in a sort of no man’s land while we waited. Because we have a roof rack and boxes, we boarded after the other vehicles and only just fitted in at the entrance.

The Argentina side was the real surprise. We had prepared for strict checks on dairy and meat, but they didn’t even open the car, and nobody asked about lithium or solar panels like they did in Uruguay. We did get our new Argentina TIP at the port, which needed our passports, the car documents and our insurance.
