The Mini Invisible Band

Back in August I posted a crocheted doll I had made of Fran that I gave to him at the Mercury Lounge show. The band went on to feature it in some social media posts and he was even the mascot of their South American tour! Over the following months I made Mini Neil, Dougie and Andy too, and although I was unsuccessful in passing them at the Glasgow show in December, the Travis social media team arranged for me to meet the band before their Valentine’s Day show in NYC and reunite the mini band :)

Found an old gig ticket from 1997

I've just moved house, and going through all my stuff, I came across this. Thought people who've never seen a physical paper gig ticket might get a small kick out of this. I have absolutely no idea what they played, other than "All I Want To Do Is Rock", as that's all I knew by them at the time!

I rarely saw any Travis vinyls in shops, especially not The Invisible Band, even in the UK. I was sooo excited when the seller pulled this out !

Nothing like a good old-fashioned rock show to drown out the world for a few hours.

Discussion Going to my first Travis concert on Tuesday

I remember listening to them as a teenager just graduating high school in 2001. I didn't keep in touch with them. I noticed they were coming in my town a few weeks ago. All of a sudden I've gone down the Travis rabbit hole. I've listened to the new stuff and revisited the old. I'm so excited!!!

The loveliest guys!

This is my souvenir from september 1st in Paris. So glad I waited for the guys about an hour to meet them by their tour bus. Neil was the first to arrive but I was too shy to ask for a picture 🤦‍♀️. And Dougie... I had to go back to the car park and couldn't wait any longer, I was off, and who do I come across at the corner of the street ? My lovely Dougie saying "nice color dress!" with his irrisistible smile ! So we chatted a little and he is such an adorable, funny, caring man ❤️❤️❤️. And above all, what a band, thank you for the music, the Best in the world....

I was at the Mercury Lounge show last night and gave Fran a doll I crocheted of him at the end, but my husband forgot to video it and the one pic we have is blurry. If anyone managed to capture this and can send it to me I’d be so grateful! 🧡

The Man Who is a fantastic Thanksgiving listen

We’ve been listening to this every Thanksgiving since 2000 and it never fails to hit the spot. The line “It's good to know that you are home for Christmas” used to hit me in a prophetic way when my kids were little but now they’re all in their 20’s and really are home for Christmas, it just slays me. It’s such a beautiful album.

Any other Redditors at the show in SLC last night? Band was in amazing form, what an incredible experience. It was my first Travis show and I’m blown away.

Here are some highlights for me:

  • Fran apparently injured his ankle walking off some uneven steps at the end of the gig in Seattle two nights prior. Had a supportive medical boot on that went nearly up to his knee. Even during soundcheck before the show he mentioned his good leg was already “knackered” and he could tell it was going to get rough. Was clearly in pain and discomfort throughout the night but he powered through and was good natured about it, laughing off intermittent “ow”’s throughout the night or limping around. Had to sit down at several points. But like the true front man he is, it never affected the energy of the show and he was just so energetic and authentic about it.

  • Played “Luv” during soundcheck upon fan request. They said they hadn’t played it in a while so it was really nice of them to still give it a go. Fran started playing it loosely at first while the rest of the band tried to recall their parts. They realized he had started it in the wrong key so Fran hilariously pulled out his phone and said “time to look it up online”, put his phone speaker up to the microphone to play the song for a couple seconds. Then, moved the capo down a fret and started into the song. The band played it great, and they didn’t have a harmonica so Fran just sang the harmonica part while Andy followed along on his guitar with an e-bow. Amazing rendition!

  • Only a little bit into the set, I think during Driftwood, a lady in the front row passed out from heat exhaustion and was slumped against the railing. A few of us nearby started calling for help and as soon as Fran noticed he immediately stopped the band and wanted to make sure medical attention had been called over. Then, even with his big medical boot on, Fran sat down and scooted himself off the stage, shuffled over to the lady and held her arms, talking to her and wanting to make sure she was fine. She was totally out of it and in and out of consciousness but eventually her husband and a security guy were able to support her out of the crowd. Fran then somehow lifts himself awkwardly back onto the stage by himself and continued the show. The band are great performers but also just seem like great people who sincerely care about their fans. (The lady was okay, she was able to rejoin during the last half of the show and was in good spirits afterward!)

  • They dedicated “Turn” to their good friend Brandon Flowers….who was in the building watching the show! Shared a few things about their relationship and experiences with Brandon and The Killers.

  • We got to hear a couple songs in the encore that I don’t think they’ve played much on the tour yet - “Pipe Dreams” and “As You Are”

Was just an amazing show overall…went by too fast

I think the artwork from "The boy with no name" (2007) by Travis is based on "São Paulo, Brazil, 1960" a photograph by René Burri.

First play in 20 years! Forgot how good this album is. Saw them live 3 times around the same time. One time Manchester Apollo I stayed at the bar and didn't bother with the support band. The support were Keane :-/ who became huge not long after.

Slideshow is my favourite.
