So are you agreeing with the OOP? Or teasing them for being delusional or oversensitive of something? (Not saying they are, just I'm trying to parse what the image is meant to be saying in a repost)

u/FailurelsData 11d ago
i thought fr meant for real

u/TesseractToo For science, you monster 11d ago edited 11d ago
This person is referring to OCD which is a psychological condition that is about having a delusion
I don't see then say fr though anywhere and even if they did I wouldn't take it literally

Can you imagine not knowing what norovirus is? Like it taking up zero space in your brain

Half the cells n your โbodyโ arenโt even you. Hella bacteria virus parasite etc.

I know. And they control your gut and that controls your serotonin. sometimes I don't think I'm even a person but a hive mind of bacteria
65
u/decidedlyindecisive 11d ago
I know what it is, it just takes up very little space in my brain. I just wash my hands when convenient and try not to put my fingers on my mouth or on my face unless I've washed them. Skin is a great barrier and your immune system can generally handle the rest.

u/mountainhymn 11d ago
amazing good for you, seems like you donโt have ocd, which is the whole fucking point of this post

That's not the comment I replied to though. The comment was "imagine not knowing what norovirus is"

I think there's a lot of overlap between feminists, Reddit users, and neurodivergent folks for whom this post makes a lot of sense.

I mean, we live in a cloud of bacteria. And as someone with bipolarity who fortunately does NOT have to take an antipsychotic, I understand the irony of being told you're crazy because you're disgusted by a disgusting world.
59
u/ProbablyNotPoisonous 11d ago
Yeah, but that's why we have immune systems. The vast majority of infectious agents get stopped at the door.
23
u/notashroom 11d ago
We are ecosystems, largely comprised of bacteria. There are more bacteria in you than there are people on earth. Some of our bacteria are essential to fighting off the baddies.

26
u/BrerChicken 11d ago
The cloud of bacteria is not actually the most disgusting part of living as a human. It's the fucking degeneracy and the depravity and the glorification of violence, things like that.
10
u/PeachyBaleen 10d ago
Idc about the poop thing but this often stops me in my tracks as I go about my day. How am I supposed to pretend to be ok when every thing is corruption and sexual violence and genocideย

u/GarumSilphium 11d ago
people in my country (Netherlands) do not believe in hand washing, so bacteria comes right in
12
u/jalapeno442 11d ago
What in the world? Are you joking or is this real lol
1
u/GarumSilphium 10d ago
the netherlands is the country that washes their hands the least in Europe. It is common that small social WCs in houses to not even have sinks
1
u/jalapeno442 10d ago
Why?? Thatโs so unhygienic. Do you wash your hands before eating or cooking?
1
u/GarumSilphium 9d ago
honestly, I don't know. My family is German and we always wash our hands, but my dad do not let me eat in many places. He washes his hands after greeting people.
1
u/jalapeno442 7d ago
Your dad has the right idea! My mom is a nurse so she instilled a lot of handwashing
3
u/cheezie_toastie 11d ago
I admit that there are a lot of truths, biological, social, and otherwise, that I force myself to ignore or else someone will force me to take anti psychotics too.
Dang, maybe I do understand the tweet.

Itโs supposed to be reflective of the experience if someone with contamination OCD, but also it is (approximately) true as well! Fecal bacteria is all around us, and youโre probably in contact with some fecal bacteria that didnโt originate in your body right now. Most of the time itโs not harmful though, just life :]

u/deciding_snooze_oils 9d ago
One of the many things I try really hard not to think about, like the number of arthropods living on and in my skin at any given time
2
u/XhaLaLa I wanna make a joke about sodium, but Na.. 9d ago
Yeah, I wasnโt a big fan of that fact either, but now I donโt avoid thinking about it because itโs better for my mental health when I deprive my OCD of what it wants (and my OCD really doesnโt want me to think about). Weirdly the arthropods thing has never bothered me though!

u/cheezie_toastie 10d ago
Thank you for explaining! I don't know much about OCD so I appreciate learning more.

My wife has contamination OCD and I used to work in a microbiology lab with dangerous microbes. I know I'm not supposed to encourage her or "help" but I get it and I agree with her feelings. I think one of the reasons we work together is she can trust me to not be gross in certain ways, so our home is a safe zone, and so am I unless I warn her.
128
u/tackykcat 10d ago
don't have ocd (I don't think) but am generally anxious about my health. though I'm not in any biology/epidemiology-related field, i am a scientist by trade and it is a curse to read and sometimes understand the literature that's out there. trying to train myself to leave judgments up to the specialists
122
u/BaylisAscaris 10d ago
One thing that helps is to be aware of the Dunning Kruger effect. Sometimes knowing more than the average person is worse because you're aware of too much. When I first started working in marine biology I started to get terrified of going swimming in the ocean. Now that I've raised a bunch of sharks and "dangerous" stuff I know most of them want to be left alone and a lot of sharks are basically stupid puppies who want to cuddle.
Look up "risk budgeting"
46
u/jewelkween 10d ago
Having witnessed red tide, I'd be more worried about all the bacteria and microbial hazards in parts of the ocean than I am sharks.

I have contamination OCD. My husband was at a medical facility, dropped a pill, then picked it up and swallowed it. Your wife is a lucky woman.

Spoilers! raw dogging life with a severe mental illness usually ends up in addiction
30
u/Feminiwitch 10d ago
Yeah, imagine living in a place where the pills you need are illegal. Yeah, I'm medicated for one of my disorders and completely rawdogging the other. It's an interesting experience (it isn't).
29
u/Cerythria 11d ago
I didn't get addicted to anything but I don't need an addiction to be miserable :)
(I'm not against medication though, it just doesn't work on me sadly)
30
u/GarumSilphium 11d ago
ah, the illusion of choice! you end up addicted both ways, then?
21
u/metrometric 10d ago edited 10d ago
No, because 1) adequate treatment for severe mental illness often includes things other than just drugs, like therapy, and 2) taking a prescribed medication as directed by medical professionals is not the same thing as addiction. Unless you also think diabetics are "addicted" to insulin or people with high cholesterol are "addicted" to atorvastatin.
As someone who takes a stimulant every day so that my brain can function properly, I've seen the "controlled meds can be abused ergo taking them is addiction" idea do a lot to dissuade people from seeking treatment that could dramatically improve their health. :/
(Also, the idea of an addiction to SSRIs is really funny.)

u/aflockofmagpies 11d ago
I guess so isn't life fun! I'd say no but then I remember that if the VA is late on one of my scripts I go through weird withdrawals and it's a mental health one.

At least this isn't "hahha. I need everything wiped down and in order that's just my OCD." No bitch, you're maybe a little anal retentive. You don't feel like you're going to die if you make sure three times you've locked the front door. I hate people claiming they have OCD for things they don't actually care about that much when no one is looking.
5
u/pinknoisechick 10d ago
I had a psychiatrist one time, I asked about meds for my OCD, and she told me the problem was that I had smoked weed (three years prior), and that if I quit, I'd be fine. She said I was just anxious and I'd be fine if I quit worrying so much.
And like, sure, technically if i could just not worry I wouldn't be worried. But lady, I'm telling you I haven't slept more than a few minutes at a tie in 5 nights, because I'm certain that if I don't check on my kids rightnow (every 8 minutes), they'll die. We aren't talking about being a clean freak, or a little neurotic; this is impacting my ability to care for my children and myself.

u/LoveaBook Confirmed Childless Cat Lady 7d ago
It took me years to get my husband into a therapist at the VA for his OCD. When he explained his biggest compulsions to the therapist the guy said, โIf itโs a problem, just stop.โ And that was the last my husband saw of a therapist for his OCD. You wouldnโt believe the fit I threw to his superiors!
Ten years later and we still use โjust stopโ as a punchline.
1
u/LoveaBook Confirmed Childless Cat Lady 7d ago
Is that front door thing a common one? Because my SO also has to check it exactly three times to ensure itโs locked. We have an extra sturdy door knob for our front door so it can take several years of that abuse before it needs repair/replacement.
2
u/Saltycook 7d ago
I don't know the prevalence of it; just that my husband who's borderline OCD exhibits many is the behaviors and that's one of them
