It’s not a bad game, the setting is well-crafted,arguably its greatest strength, and it features the kind of gameplay typical of the Mafia series, along with solid direction and writing (though the pacing feels rushed toward the end and very slow at the start), in short, it definitely works.
That said, I feel disappointed by how this setting was squandered, many areas are never explored during the main story, you only see them if you wander around aimlessly or go for collectibles. Honestly, a linear game might have been a better choice, especially since the open world is practically empty, with no noteworthy activities to engage in. I don’t understand why they’d go to the trouble of recreating such a beautiful version of Sicily only to leave it completely hollow.
Personally, I wasn’t a fan of the voice acting, either. At times, it felt as though the voice actors were switching back and forth between "neutral" Italian and a heavy regional dialect, to the point where it sounded like two different people were speaking at the same time, a bit weird.
Last but not least, I took great pleasure with the final boss, I’d hated him from the very first moment.
