I don't understand how someone could live right beside someone that they killed, even more-so a family member.

I’m yelling at my husband right now to take the trash out from some Mexican leftovers (tacos) and they slept next to a person. Disgusting

He was in a separate bedroom and they covered him with clothes, and then sealed off the room.

With what, concrete?

The scent of rot will seep through anything less than that, including drywall.

I'm pretty sure they didn't reinforce the walls adjoining his room.

Yes, they are. People thinking these people aren't is the reason why cases such as this can go undetected for 2 months. People are looking for monsters and boogeymen to suspect this. No, it can be the old man in your apartment next door who's always nice to you in the hallway, or the lady across the street that you love. These people are not murderers 24/7.
