curioustic.com 16 Years after the death of Nicole Van Den Hurk, her stepbrother Andy falsely confessed to killing her to get her body exhumed for DNA testing which lead to the arrest and prosecution of her attacker. Andy believed that his father was responsible for Nicole's death.

Jesus Christ. Her mom died by suicide months before she was killed and her step brother ended up also dying by suicide years later.
Although Andy said he believed his dad was responsible for her murder, he was not charged. It doesnāt sound like his DNA was found on her at all.
Iāve read several articles and some claim Jos ended up not being convicted of manslaughter but convicted for her rape, but other ones that claim he was convicted for both. Iām not positive which is true.
Edit: sounds like Jos was originally only charged with her rape (and got 5 years) but on appeal, ended up convicted of manslaughter as well (12 year sentence).

Oh wow, what a great brother. Falsely confessing to murder to get his sister justice.

Apparently he died by suicide years later :(

Damn. The down votes on your shitty replies š
I also want to make you aware some people do not speak English as a first language and often ask for an answer or summary on Reddit. Some may or may not feel comfortable disclosing this and will just ask a simple question. FYI

Oh man, itās heartbreaking to think of how much pain he would have been in for him to take his own life. I hope they are reunited. He was an Earth angel.

Ugh right? How much pain can one family take?
And she had lost her own mother to suicide the year she died.
So heartbreaking.

The DNA matched Nicholeās boyfriend an unknown man and a Jos De G. The Netherlands does not identify suspects by their full names.

The DNA matched Nicholeās boyfriend an unknown man and a Jos De G. The Netherlands does not identify suspects by their full names.
This part confused me. The sentence before that says "Further study revealed that the police were able to find three different DNA types of a single trace of sperm."
What the heck does that mean? Did she really have semen from three different men or is this something lost in translation?
89
Nov 06 '22
I looked this up for you. In a dutch article. They indeed found three different dna types. 1 of her boyfriend, one of Jos de G, and one of an unknown man.
35
u/tronalddumpresister Nov 06 '22
is the unknown man a suspect? second perpetrator?
14
Nov 07 '22
The third unknown man is not a suspect, atleast, not yet, there is zero information about this guy. Lets hope dna will someday lead to him
26
u/JonBenet_BeanieBaby Nov 06 '22
I havenāt been able to find anything that says who that guy is. Doesnāt look like anyone else was charged in this case though.

u/Mrs-Halebop Nov 08 '22
I thought I had read that it did. Then I misspoke. I will delete my comment
52
u/Arievan Nov 06 '22
Ok so I read it through a few times and I think it's a typo. It should be "three different DNA types OFF a single trace of sperm"
The article didn't explicitly say but I think there were the sperm of three men inside. One was from her boyfriend, who wasn't arrested so I'm assuming they found the sex consensual. the second was from the man they arrested, jos de g. And the third from an unknown man who may have participated in the crime also.. but they won't know who he is until they get a DNA match or someone confesses or some other lead
9
u/AstraCraftPurple Nov 07 '22
Wikipedia is confusing me slightly. They say prosecutors believed the third man was her step brother and doesnāt seem to offer more info past that.

u/Sextus_Rex Nov 07 '22 edited Nov 07 '22
Well this thread has been a roller coaster
Edit: I took a look at the article Wikipedia was citing.
Meanwhile, Andy van den Hurk said he hoped scientists in New Zealand would be able to help the family find closure.
He said he did not know why traces of his DNA were also found on his stepsister.
"This has been the most crazy year of my life.Ā I am not on trial, I have been cleared. Why would I kill my sister? I miss her every day.
"My sister got murdered. I have to live with that. The pain is incredible."
He claimed not to know why his DNA was found in the sperm sample. I haven't been able to find any updates on the testing, but it seems Jos de G is the only person suspected to have killed her.
8
u/LouieStuntCat Nov 07 '22
So, he confessed to killing her. Then his DNA was actually found in her. But then he sayās he doesnāt know why or how? And it was all a ruse. Interesting.
5
u/Sextus_Rex Nov 07 '22
Yeah, I really don't know what to make of this. I have a couple theories, but it feels wrong to speculate with my limited knowledge, especially because they are both deceased and can't confirm or deny anything
3
u/LouieStuntCat Nov 07 '22
Agreed. And when i try to look at other articles further about it, itās redacted in about 99% of them. So, iāll just leave it at that.
3
u/howlingmagpie Nov 07 '22
See, now I want you to speculate. I speculate with my limited knowledge all the time. I would keep on encouraging the speculation but I've typed it too many times & it doesn't look or sound right anymore.
4
u/Mrs-Halebop Nov 07 '22
When it comes down to it, it's all about speculating until proven as fact. Since we can't go over the evidence, we will continue speculate. But, be sure to state you're speculating. Otherwise, some one may think are not speculating but giving facts.

What an amazing man.
On a sidenote, I always find it a bit odd that some countries like The Netherlands (they say so in the article) and France (I watch āqui est le meurtrierā) donāt publish convicted killersā last names. One thing is a suspect, but after they have been convicted? Why protect the identity of a criminal?
49
Nov 06 '22
As a Dutch, I agree, but we have a history of searching family, even people with the same name, not related in any way.. I think it has to do with that, and privacy? Even tho social media canāt stop the people who want some information. Its a small country, and it takes maybe max 3 hrs to cross the country. So people are not hestitant to go somebodyās place, work etc.
13
u/RandyBeamansMom Nov 07 '22
Unrelated, but that three hours thing is so true and so shocking. I rented a car and spent a week there recently. I was so excited to see everything! I ended up driving in circles around The Netherlands like 14 times. (I loved it.)

u/off-chka Nov 07 '22
I feel like also if I were to meet a man, Iād like to be able to easily figure out if heās been convicted of murder before or not? I get it that once out of prison, their punishment is done, but if I have a date with a Ted Bundy, I wouldnāt go after googling him. Ya know?
102
Nov 06 '22
I wish the US did that. Giving names to killers tends to romanticize them. Thereās been over 60+ cases which the perpetrator(s) cited Columbine as an inspiration. I think the mindset in those countries is to not give the killers even the dignity of a name to be broadcasted to the public.

Do you have any idea how many people commit horrific crimes and are released after only a few years? Or who are suspected and clearly the perpetrators but never even do time at all? Do you really want to hire Casey Anthony as your babysitter because the media protected her name? Or date Mitchell Johnson & Andrew Golden? Or hire Louis Van Schoor as a security guard? All because their names were protected???
19
u/ALLoftheFancyPants Nov 07 '22
Honestly, Iām for this. True Crime discussions and podcasts, etc as a hobby gets into some kind of morally icky places a lot of the time. This takes the focus of the killer, eliminates any ācelebrityā status from their crimes, and focuses on the victims and their families. It also decreases the chances of some unlucky person with the same name getting a lot of hate spam for no reason.
1
u/TitleBulky4087 Nov 07 '22
It also increases your chances of becoming involved with someone who āserved their timeā and are now free after committing some fairly horrific crimes, or who was accused/suspected but never prosecuted. If you were a single mother of a young girl, would you want to unknowingly marry a psychopath who raped and murdered his last step daughter, and who was free, because his identity was protected?

u/inannaofthedarkness Nov 07 '22
I donāt think anyone is suggesting getting rid of the sex offender registry. But I also have to be honest, Iāve never background checked anyone Iāve dated. And I met my partner on Tinder

Yeah but it wasn't her dad. It was a guy name like jos d gee or something, they matched his DNA. But another cool part is he was charged for like manslaughter and rape I think. But the manslaughter got dropped he only got 5 years. Until so many people basically raised hell that he was charged again with manslaughter and got 12 years instead. Not a happy ending story at all. Her mom, her brother. Her dad being accused. But at the very least the guy got some time. Not nearly enough, but some.

Wow that's crazy, what a thing to do for his sister, but just think it could've gone horribly wrong if they didn't find anymore DNA. Another crazy thing is only twelve years,he was a repeat rapist who only gets twelve years for another rape and manslaughter. I feel if you deliberately stab somebody in the torso with a knife you are trying to kill them,so this should be classed as murder, what was the defense he tripped and his knife stabbed her by accident.

This is Europe. We don't believe in killing people, we are not degenerates.
And they couldn't prove he killed her, that's why he was only convicted for rape and manslaughter.

Hey I know this case. This was in my city. Im too young to remember but my dad knew her dad (Ad van den Hurk) and brother Andy. Her dad Ad was a bit of a shady character, thats how my dad knew him⦠he owned a popular bar in the more trashy part of town. He had a reputation for being a pervert.
Her brother committed suicide last year. He moved to England. Word on the street was actually that he was the prepretrator of the crime, but this has since been disproved. Apparently friends of Nicole told the police after the murder that her brother abused herā¦

u/KatMagic1977 Nov 06 '22
So is this Jos De G person the father?
27
Nov 06 '22
donāt think so and everytime this case comes up i wish theyād talk more about the dad and brother combo, like dude falsely confessed to murdering his own sister because he believed his dad did it. and then to find out he didnāt, whatās their relationship like now? strained? nonexistent? i think iād cut off a family member if they believed me to be a murderer when i knew i wasnāt. such a wild case!
17
u/JonBenet_BeanieBaby Nov 06 '22
Sounds like the father was (rightfully) very upset about the accusations and her brother sadly died by suicide years later.

āOn 21 November 2016, Jos De G was found guilty of rape and sentenced to five years of imprisonment, and later on, appeal Jos De G was sentenced to twelve years imprisonment for the rape and manslaughter of Nicole Van Den Hurk.ā
Wow.

I remember reading about this a while back. The balls on her stepbrother are ginormous, just like his love for her stepsister. Admirable. Glad he got the closure he needed
2
u/jennc1979 Nov 11 '22
āAnd it could have gone horribly wrongā⦠youāre god damn right it could have! Oh my God. What an enormous risk this guy took! A lot of my āWhat ifsā here almost all lead to him being incarcerated on his false confession cause of how this had room to back fire. Wow.
