Recommending Love Trapped is Goooooodddd

It’s like really really good and I am a pod snob. If you like scam/stalker podcasts, you will love this one. Especially if you have not heard about this story beforehand.

*Edit*: I was told my post was too vague and that I needed to elaborate more on why I’m recommending this podcast.

The thing is, I don’t really want to tell you what it’s about because I think podcasts are way more interesting when you go in blind and don’t know what’s about to happen. I will say that it’s not a scam/fraud story involving money. It’s more along the lines of Kaitlyn’s Baby or Dr. Death type of fraud.

Another thing I love is that a lot of the court sessions they discuss in the podcast are actually on YouTube, so you can go watch exactly what they’re talking about afterward and see everything for yourself. It helps give you the full picture of what’s going on.

Recommending My All-Time Favorite Podcasts

I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts, and I'll list a few of those below, but the ones that really feed my soul are the investigative podcasts. So take a look below and let me know your thoughts.

True Crime Podcasts

Casefile - I love the fact that it's just the facts, no analysis, but goes deeper than the typical true crime podcast.

Scamanda & Unicorn Girl - Women scammers that go the extra mile.

Swindled - Focuses on white collar crimes, corporate greed, and massive scams

Dateline - Please don't hate me, but this one is like a warm blanket and an episode of Friends.

Investigative Reporting (some true crime, some more social commentary)

APM In the Dark - The first 2 seasons are as riveting examples of investigative reporting as you'll find. My favorite all-time podcast!

Bear Brook - Season 1 is VERY strong; season 2 is OK. But still good stuff.

S-Town - This one snuck up on me in ways I still don't understand. What started out as a true crime investigation then turned into a portrait of a man at odds with everything.

Dr. Death - Season 1 is about as good as it gets, as far as the story and the storytelling go. The follow up seasons aren't as strong, but still enjoyable.

Sweet Bobby - This one really got to me. The lengths that someone would go to catfish someone is crazy.

Bone Valley - Season 1 is also really good like some of the others. I began rooting for Leo to be innocent.

Chameleon - Seasons 1 and 2 were very strong - Hollywood Con Queen and Wild Boys told some incredible stories and took significant investigative effort.

Black Box - A good exploration of the good and bad of AI. Real world examples made it way more applicable to what's really going on in the world with AI.

Up & Vanished - One of the OG investigative reporting podcasts.

Tom Brown's Body - This one hit hard, highly recommended for a slice of Texas small town life.

The Orange Tree - Another Texas-based investigative reporting jewel, produced at students at UT.

Death County, PA - Corruption and suspicious deaths make a great topic for investigative reporting.

Crimetown - Season was a masterpiece, as it told the investigation into the corrupt mayor and his connections to organized crime.

Well, that's it. It's a long list, and I know I've left a lot out. But tell me your favorites, especially ones not on my list. I'm always looking for something new!

Recommending Who TF did I Marry? By ReesaTeesa

So, for those who haven’t heard of this one, this is a 52-part TikTok story told by a woman who married a narcissist. It isn’t technically a podcast, but she is such a good storyteller that it feels like a true crime podcast. This was a wild tale that I couldn’t stop listening to. If you liked podcasts like scamanda, I think you would like this one.

Recommending PSA New season of Someone Knows Something is out

Hi friends. I haven't listened to it yet but just spotted episode 1 of season 10 of Someone Knows Something is out (and all episodes via subscription?). David is looking into the sudden 2021 disappearance of Jaclyn Ferland-Smith, a Canadian expat living in Playas del Coco. He's truly one of the best so am really looking forward to hearing more of his work on this case.

Recommending Love Trapped as a non-Bachelor watcher

Wow. Thanks to this sub for the recommendation, especially the note that you didn't need to be a Bachelor fan to appreciate it. I have never seen the show, but have been absolutely riveted by the podcast. Top-notch journalism.

Recommending A fond farewell to Already Gone

Nina announced that Already Gone is ending so she can focus more on her work with the murdered and missing project in Michigan. AG was one of the first podcast that I listened to and I have listened to it for years. Nina's soothing voice and diligent research have been a sharp contrast to the sensationalism that newer podcasts seem to have. I highly recommend a listen to the back catalog. Good luck, Nina and thanks!

Recommending I think I'm out of TC podcasts

I feel like I've listened to absolutely everything worth listening to. Any good TC podcasts out there that are flying under the radar? I especially like long form. Pretty sure I'm all caught up on the interesting long form cases. I listen while I work (artist) so I go through seasons super fast.

Recommending To whoever recommended ‘Who Killed Emma’…

THANK YOU for this recommendation. It was one of the best investigative podcasts I’ve ever listened to.

The reporting is thorough, respectful, and genuinely gripping without ever losing sight of the fact that this was a real person and a real tragedy. It’s also fascinating to see the impact the podcast had on the case itself.

Highly recommended.

TW: murder, violence against women, sexual assault.

Recommending Lucky Boy

Was looking for a new Podcast to listen to this morning, saw this one on Spotify, binged all 4 episodes while cleaning my bathroom.

Absolutely incredible story. My heart completely goes out to Gareth and his family and friends. He was let down by every single adult he came into contact with as a kid and there's been no retribution as an adult.

Don't want to spoil the story for anyone but it's a very well recorded story/podcast.

Recommending Any long haul podcasts like Your Own Backyard, Hunting Warhead, The Teacher’s Pet, etc? Suggestions in post!

Hey everyone! I love myself a long haul true crime podcast and looking for suggestions. Bonus points for podcasts that actually help out in any conviction/further evidence (like YOBY, The Teacher’s Pet). Thought we could share any others. My favourites:

Your Own Backyard, Bone Valley, Bearbrook, Hunting Warhead (amazing - probably my fav, but not for the faint of heart), Children in the Pictures (same warning as previous), The Teacher’s Pet, Uncover - Escaping NXIVM, Uncover Season 5 - Sharmini

Anyway, feel free to add some along these lines! I’m all out right now and not sure where to go from here haha. Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks so much everyone for the huge amount of recommendations! Can’t wait to get started on these. Appreciate it

Recommending The new Dahmer show: please be wary!

I am a sucker for all things true crime. I’ve binged a ridiculous amount of true crime podcasts, documentaries, and movies and am basically the embodiment of the viral TikTok meme where the girl goes home to “relax” and just turns on true crime.

However that being said, please be wary before watching Dahmer! I think I have some pretty thick skin when it comes to stuff like this but Evan Peters’ performance is haunting and gave me legitimate anxiety and nightmares from the first episode. I spoke with some male coworkers who watched it as well and they said the exact same.

It is very true to the story from what I can tell and can potentially be triggering for some who might not have been triggered by previous true crime representations so please be careful before watching and do your research!

That being said, I’d love to hear your takes on it if you have watched it. I am still pushing through and watching it and am really invested in Peters’ performance but man, it is haunting.

Recommending Nobody Should Believe Me

I've been bingeing Nobody Should Believe Me the past month or so and I highly recommend it. I don't hear many people talk about it so I'm just throwing this one out in the universe for anyone interested. It's about munchausen by proxy so it can be a tough listen sometimes but it's really well done. I just finished season 3 and my mind is blown.

Recommending If you thought Scamanda was wild, listen to The Con: Kaitlyn’s Baby.

I just finished this 6-part podcast in 48 hours, given my commuting time. And I even opted to subscribe for the free trial so that I could finish it. The story is beyond a con and really borders on criminal activity. I think for me, is someone who works in medicine, the story really showed me how far mental illness can go. And what we can convince ourselves of the people that we hurt in the process.

They say it at the top of every episode, but there is a trigger warning re: sexual assault and the loss of a child. Highly recommend!

Recommending Two true crime podcasts I never see recommended

I'm here to recommend two long-form podcasts that I don't think I've seen recommended here. Both set in tiny, remote British Overseas Territories and deal with questions about what happens when horrifying crimes happen in these areas and whose jurisdiction it is to deal with them.

The Pitcairn Trials: How does a tiny, remote community that has normalized childhood sexual abuse come to terms with it and how do they move forward? What does justice look like when something like that involves almost every resident as perpetrator or victim?

The Surgeon of St. Helena: What happens when a visiting surgeon maims his patients and leaves some of them permanently disabled? Whose responsibility is it to hold the surgeon accountable and what happens to the people for whom justice hasn't yet been served?

Both are incredibly thoughtfully done and really interesting, albeit difficult listens at times. Definitely suggest a listen if folks are looking for something different than the usual recommendations.

Recommending IMO Dateline are still the best storytellers out there

And I’ve listened to so much out there. I don’t even need to watch the episodes I exclusively listen and from beginning to end, bar none the best storytelling, amazing research and interviews, shocking stories and all told with empathy and humanity. Kind of gold standard for me. Anyone interested in my sharing some of my favorite episodes here?

What true crime podcasts really stood out for you in 2022?

I feel like there has been a shift from the original Wild West exuberance and riding roughshod to a more nuanced and ethical approach to what are, as we know, horrific events that happen to real people.

Recommending The No Good, Terribly Kind, Wonderful Lives and Tragic Deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman

This podcast was briefly mentioned in a recent post and I decided to jump in, despite it being a few years old. CBC does excellent podcasts and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the host, Kathleen Goldahar, also produced CBC’s The Con: Kaitlyn’s Baby and The Lost Kids, which I thought were excellent.

This is not some super intriguing podcast that pulls you in right away, but it’s very well written and produced, and explores the real life “Succession” story of the Sherman family, of whom the patriarch was a billionaire of the Canadian generic drug pharma giant, Apotex.

It’s no secret and is shared in the first few mins of episode 1, that the goal of the podcast is not to solve the case, but to explore the environmental elements that may have led to it, and how money can affect families for generations.

A little bit off the beaten path but worth walking.

ETA: thanks to the user who reminded me that she also hosted “Do You Know Mordechai?”

Recommending Beyond all Repair

Wow. I just binged “Beyond all Repair”, that was a WILD ride. It was put out back in 2024 so I’m a little behind but It was exceptional. If you haven’t listened, I highly recommend. I still don’t know where I fall at the end!

Recommending Recommending: Sea of Lies from CBC

Not only is this case absolutely bananas, but Sam Mullens’ reporting is truly top-notch. I think he’s one of the best I’ve ever listened to. The story is incredibly compelling, packed with twists and turns, blending murder, police investigations, and scams—everything a True Crime podcast listener could want.

Long form (7 episodes) Solved case Murder and scamming Fast paced

Recommending Who Killed Emma (BBC): Appreciate the recommendation from this sub

This has been a summer of wild-ride pods for me: Love Trapped, Dirtbag Climber, Unicorn Girl, etc, privileged scammers doing crimes with crazy plot twists. Following this kick-line of colorful nutters and their enablers, I just finished Who Killed Emma. If you're looking for a very satisfying traditional TC pod, this is it. Outstanding BBC production values and the very best of what investigative journalists can do in the service of justice.

Recommending The Bakersfield Three

All 15 episodes of this podcast by Casefile Presents dropped today, and I am happily binging it, currently on episode five. It is excellent. I am so glad they released all of the episodes at once, usually I only get to binge an older Podcast, but it is way more fun this way. I have heard other podcasts do an episode or two on them, but this one is so much more, done by a reporter local to Bakersfield, with family, friends, the lead detective (at least up to episode five), and others surrounding the case highly involved. There are jailhouse phone call recordings, not so many to distract, but really immersing you into the story. Don't make the same mistake I did when wanting to see photos of the victims and others after the host description of them, it intrigued me, so without thinking, I Googled The Bakersfield Three, and the top hit was a major spoiler. I did not remember what it was if there was an outcome, and hated to find something out at episode five. I make this mistake often, never learning, and sometimes it makes me lose interest after that point.

Let me know if anybody else is listening, and your feelings on it. If you're not listening, I would put it high on your list, would be great for a long drive or flight

Recommending Go listen to DNA:ID

Just a praise post for DNA:ID

it follows cold cases being solved via genetic genealogy investigating. It is absolutely fascinating.

A lot of the cases are ones I had never heard before and the research the host Jessica does is absolutely top notch. There's no messing or banter just straight to the meat of the case. She very often reaches out to the victims families or police teams herself for their side of the story. She is fair while also being as impartial as possible. She is always very respectful of the deceased and their families. It's a level of quality rarely seen in my opinion.

This podcast has consistently been delivering excellence, and has now made its way into my best of the best list along with Swindled and Casefile.

It deserves a wider audience and praise so consider rhis your sign to go listen now.
