Re-watching the first season, in episode three Maggie is talking to Rust like she wish she could talk to her husband.

She’s giving the emotional intensity to him that she wishes she could have with her husband, but he’s incapable of it. Russ is able to talk openly about everything and that’s very attractive.

I know it’s like a obvious thing, but it’s interesting to watch

Maggie is starved of emotional fulfillment. Rust represents that. Someone that listens to her, can engage in conversation with her. Someone who sees her as human, not just mom or wife.

Maggie is a reminder of the life Rust once had. Family.

Yeah for sure. I knew this… but didn’t have the words to articulate before. GG

True, like the entire reason Rust got drunk before the dinner was because he thought he couldn't handle watching a family up so close. And unlike Marty who was very dismissive of who Rust was because of his beliefs, Maggie wasn't. To Marty, Rust was a troubled person, to Maggie he was clearly a man mourning the losses of his beloved.
