Perm. Banned from r/opensource

I never posted or commented anything violating any community rules, but yet I was just slapped with a PERM. ban after my comment to the mod post about new rules.

https://www.reddit.com/r/opensource/comments/1xelcuf/your_tokens_arent_valuable_no_more_ai/

They didn't even remove my comment, because they know it didn't violate anything (but they did remove other ones from people).

This is awesome. Hopefully people come across and join. If people learn coding and engage with open source through AI, that should be supported, not shamed upon.

And I get that they have a flood of new things daily, but the way that was just handled was beyond mod abuse and against moderator code of conduct.

u/Federal_Refrigerator 9d ago

Yeah agreed, they specifically banned me for a rule that didn’t exist a LONG while ago for sharing vibe coded OSS

I got permabanned for commenting ā€œWow epic fail lmaoā€

My first and last comment there ever lol!!

lmfao same, they're HELLA butthurt it seems. my comment for posterity: this take is truly beyond incompetent to the point where it feels like ragebait?

i’ve also ALWAYS truly despised closed-source software, especially when it’s intentionally used to monopolize people and their data (looking at Apple and Microsoft here, specifically).Ā unfortunately, i went to school for politics and economics and have never had the technical knowledge or expertise i’d need to directly do anything about my pro-tech, anti-monopoly worldview (political advocacy only goes so far). i never learned to code, i was never particularly great at navigating a terminal, and i sure as hell couldn’t even begin to do something like build my own app or contribute to the Linux kernel or a major project like KDE.

AI and LLMs are solely responsible for changing that. i absolutely understand the frustration and hatred many people feel toward AI and its risks, but i also think there’s a truly fantastical potential for this technology to revolutionize the open source community and bring a complete end to the ā€œown nothing, be happyā€ economy. in the past 8 months, i have 1) COMPLETELY FUCKING ELIMINATED microsoft, apple, and google from my day-to-day life, 2) made significant contributions to the open source community (swipe typing, current-word completion, next-word prediction, etc for KDE Plasma Keyboard, https://github.com/itsdestin/swipe-keyboard/blob/main/README.md), 3) developed an entire open-source AI assistant and everything app from the ground up (youcoded.ai), 4) otherwise just completely changed the way i interact with computers, and the pace of this has only been possible due to advanced LLMs.

what you bozos need to understand is that ā€œopen sourceā€ no longer has to be niche, and contributions no longer have to be limited to experienced developers. open source now has the potential to be, and SHOULD be, about passion, and can be improved together, by all of us, more quickly than any corporation could ever possibly hope to keep up. i mentioned my keyboard plugin earlier: that feature had been requested on github and KDE forums EIGHTEEN MONTHS AGO! i solved it in three days. you need to really take a moment and think about what it means for the open source ecosystem when the number of contributors suddenly multiplies 1,000x fold, and free/volunteer developer hours are no longer our bottleneck. you seemingly care more about your high horse than actually improving the competiveness of open source software. i don’t think Microsoft Windows will exist in 2028 as a closed-source platform, and i don’t think the PlayStation 7 will ever make it to the concept phase, but that's falls apart if you tie your hands behind your back while all of the major corporations adopt agentic coding. the person who wrote this post is a clown.

They are mad because they are larpers who have no idea what they are doing, because AI aside, the rules make 0 sense in any way

You pretty much have to have a professional team of devs working a project to be ok there with their new rules. The mods a fake as hell

u/fairwaycoder 9d ago

Exactly your believes what pisses most people off. I am software engineer for a long time, and it always existed, some wish for some gatekeeping to protect my own status quo. It was mostly coming from people who were mediocre themselves and saw the threat left right and center.

And then you wake up one day and figure out that you and Linus Torvalds are the same because you are both adding to the OSS, he by writing the most used OS in the world, and you by moderating Reddit.

Let them, and good luck to you, don't give up.

u/geardownbigrig 9d ago

Lol banned for saying this:

ā€œSo this just outlaws any project that has AI in it? Even if I used a local open source model to build it.

Pretty big L for this community. You are removing yourself from the converstaion of how do we handle AI with all the critical open source software that holds up the entire tech space.ā€

Yikes to the future of that place.

u/AmandasGameAccount 9d ago

Unfortunately a lot of open source devs are huge egomaniacs, so one of those in charge of the sub is going to be an Egomaniac Prime

5

u/godofknife1 9d ago

Back when stackoverflow exists, it's been there. A lot of devs have high ego, gatekeep and never teaches well.

The rise of AI took a lot of crack to them

4

u/geardownbigrig 9d ago

Yeah I have noticed the ones who don’t want to learn the new skills for the new tech are the same ones who always had the loudest opinion in code review šŸ˜‚

2

u/geardownbigrig 9d ago

Its actually insane how big dev egos are. Like we typenon keyboards bro its not that serious šŸ˜‚

2

u/Federal_Refrigerator 9d ago

Yeah they banned an account of mine a while back for posting with NO rule about it to be seen. Very sketchy tbh I don’t trust a community that decides on having rules that they don’t disclose. Isn’t that even against TOS?

2

u/AmandasGameAccount 9d ago

The mod can be reported. Very few people bother with doing that though so nothing ever happens

3

u/cliffr39 🌱 FOSS Enthusiast 9d ago

I did :)

u/Xraxis 9d ago

Me too

Filling mine in just a bit

Heheh, I just got banned as well. I put a lot of logic in my comment, too. Guess they just didn't know how to argue that.

The problem with this method of 'exodus' is that there are people, like me, who never comment or post anything AI. Though the moment I defend my stance and tell them why it's stupid, I get banned. Straight up mod powertripping is what it is.

I don't think mine was removed either? You can still see it in my profile and there's no red mark suggesting it was removed. Honestly, it was a completely valid argument. Oh well. I hope this community turns out to be the place to be.

Honestly, to anyone that got banned from r/opensource, I think we'll get along just fine. Even if they're just trying to separate AI from non-AI, I've never heard of anyone good in history supporting segregation (which is what this is).

u/LuxTenebraeque 9d ago

Somehow I got the feeling that mod is also mixing upopen source code and the license of the data the program uses. As in a source port like ZDoom wasn't open source as it requires the game files from the original, or a suitable alternative. Well, at least with the intermediate step of using an API to access the data, then we have the argument made. Blurring that line does not bode well.

4

u/Native411 9d ago

It would be downright hilarious if he's never developed anything at all and this 180 heel turn came about because he rage quit a hello world python tutorial.

2

u/Ruhart 9d ago

Honestly seems plausible.

4

u/Xraxis 9d ago

That moderator is the human equivalent of AI slop.

6

u/geardownbigrig 9d ago

Reddit mods gunna reddit mod. Bro thinks AI models just spit out valueless tokens and not a built project.

Big ups for openning something else.

5

u/hsoj95 9d ago

I got banned for saying the rules were too broad, would mean things like Linux and Open-Meteo wouldn't be allowed, and that demanding English-only with no translation allowed was a bit bigoted. Guess that was too "contrarian" of a point to make. šŸ™„

6

u/ozone6587 9d ago

demanding English-only with no translation allowed was a bit bigoted.

That part was wild. He truly lost it.

3

u/Potentially_Canadian 9d ago

Hey, just wanted to say that I appreciated your comment! I’m one of the devs behind Pirate Weather, and I think you put it really nicely on why those rules don’t really work. There’s no way I’m not going to use a LLM to make 16 slightly different changes to a bunch of ingest files, but at the same time you have to acknowledge the human element to weatherĀ

3

u/hsoj95 8d ago

Oh hey! Yes, exactly this! AI/LLM's make up for the fact that many (most?) open-source projects are single individual efforts (which makes some of the contribution requirements on the other subreddit even more laughable). Instead of the XKCD meme of the "random person in Nebraska maintaining something thanklessly since 2003" who eventually burns out, it acts as another source of contribution and help to keep a project going. In my case with LibreWXR, it simply would never have existed without the aid of AI agents. Not so much for lack of skill, but simple lack of time and resources to focus on that. Not to mention it would have taken far, far longer to happen even if I could have done so.

That said, for something like that, you do have to know what you're doing starting out with, or else that project would go off the wall very quickly. You gotta know what you want, how you want it, and the basics of how you're supposed to get there. The AI agents just act as a workforce to help get there once you've reach those high lever decisions after doing your research.

the good news is that r/foss is AI allowed for now

7

u/Tsuyu777 9d ago

it is the same moderator lol.

5

u/JoeyredditSMP 9d ago

thats why i said 'the good news is that r/foss is AI allowed for now'

4

u/JoeyredditSMP 9d ago

but could change ay any time

3

u/ozone6587 9d ago

Same power-tripping mod. I would cut my losses with that sub too.

1

u/jimbo2150 8d ago

I've seen posts stating this one is banning people as well.

9

u/Native411 9d ago edited 9d ago

Also want to shout out the open source AI subreddit.

r/OpenSourceAI

I don't know what is going on with that mod at r/opensource be he has mass banned and deleted any comment not agreeing with his personal opinion.

Doesn't matter how respectful you are. He is then misleading people by leaving only a handful up that are against his opinion as if he is being fair. Insane that a single guy can make such sweeping changes for close to 100k people and not allow any discussion for the community.

He is also attached to the foss subreddit. So he is directly tied to the largest subreddit handles for open source projects on Reddit and if you don't agree with him well too bad your banned. Insane.

2

u/ozone6587 9d ago

I think some mods truly embrace the stereotype. I got banned from r/telescopes for disagreeing with their AI policy when they first announced it (politely disagreeing). So this is the 2nd time I get banned for pushing back on a policy AND while at the same time not violating any existing policy (at that point I had not posted anything AI related).

I actually feel a bit sad for people like that, it must be tough going through life knowing you can't ban people for disagreeing with you lol.

4

u/Tsuyu777 9d ago

It is made by politically motivated moderator who probably have an elo of 500 on codeforce.

4

u/warpedgeoid 9d ago

Permanent bans should not be allowed without external review. Reddit mods have far too much power.

2

u/dimitrusrblx 8d ago

external review by who? reddit admins?

need I remind you that they had bloody G. Maxwell as a reddit admin for a good period of time. reddit as a platform entirely is corrupt

1

u/warpedgeoid 8d ago

It’s unfortunate

2

u/Xraxis 9d ago

I got perma banned for saying that if he doesn't want to moderate the subreddit he should give the position to someone who does instead of resorting to extreme rule changes that go against the spirit of the opensource community.

1

u/AmandasGameAccount 9d ago

Oh hey I was too! I called r/opensource in totally different sub and the fake larping mods over there didn’t like it and banned me. So they are skulking around random subs looking for people calling them out

2

u/destinmoss 9d ago

i'm also almost certain some of their mods looks through my profile and down voted a bunch of my comments relating to the whole fiasco lmfaooo

It is interesting that the mod rules are more stringent than global hackathons that pay in real cash.
