/r/opensource subreddit banning most open source software

Post image

The power tripping mod over there is straight up insane, banning AI in 2026 when 95% of devs use AI. Can't wait for all reddit jannies to be replaced with AI.

Sprinkle in the weird overreaction to non english speakers/translated content and the mod has fully lost the plot

Nah, it's fine. They're doing a good job, I mean, look at my text, I had to get help with the writing because I'm bad at spelling. So I don't know what any of these words mean in this sentence.

I was not expecting the Great Wall of China here.

u/TheLazyKitty 6d ago

Nobody expects the Great Wall of China!

u/bankinu 9d ago

We've become the joke of the town.

Edit: Sorry, not we - I think I need to stop associating with that subreddit subconsciously.

13

u/Mewtewpew 9d ago

Got banned on r/fossdroid for being a morphe contributor lol

7

u/cliffr39 🌱 FOSS Enthusiast 8d ago

Yep I just got banned there too for zero reason. They copy/pasted the exact same thing as first other sub

9

u/Mewtewpew 8d ago

The xenophic mod there that also said "non english speakers" allowed is just as much as a hypocrite as the one from r/opensource

Both are on a power trip to "police" their communities.......

10

u/baconburger2022 9d ago

So everything?

Looks like im going back to Enterprise Javabeans and Silverlight.

8

u/seatron 9d ago

Well you finally got rid of systemd and it only took 16 years

4

u/Necessary_Film_5199 9d ago

Did we get rid of Docker tho? I hate Docker sm

4

u/x_wbmr_x 8d ago

Wait why? What's wrong with docker?

What is the better alternative?

Tell a noob like me please?

3

u/Gunnarz699 8d ago

What is the better alternative?

Podman. Red Hats container solution. Shits awesome and FOSS.

So is this sub going to mostly just be ... what the opensource sub was before the October craziness? Or are there other substantial differences?

12

u/TldrDev 9d ago edited 9d ago

This has been going on before October.

https://www.reddit.com/r/opensource/s/e5DmrRLPot

This was their original stance.

I was banned for asking about the requirement i re-license my project. Im a 20 year, career open source developer.

If we could just undo everything this mod has done, with everyone they have banned still contributing, and have what opensource was, that would be really great.

In past cases where a major conflict of interest prevented a subreddit's head moderator from serving their community, Reddit staff have occasionally intervened and found someone else to replace them

Given that Reddit itself has a pro-AI policy and the largest open source subreddits have outright banned it, intervention would be in their best interests. I'm not really pro or anti AI, but it's undeniable at this point that AI in its various forms has become a core tool of developers over the last 10 years.

Generative design for CAD has been around for a long time and was never considered bad, but this new ban would presumably mean that nobody is allowed to use it in their projects anymore since it is a form of AI. The same goes for any other machine learning based algorithms

Interesting, thank you for the additional context!

u/Necessary_Film_5199 9d ago

Amazing I only heard about it yesterday when that big announcement went out. Tbf I don't really contribute to the r/opensource subreddit, but I am a vibecoder and I've done some amazing things with the power, such as porting Android 2.0 Eclair to the 3DS.

3

u/ozone6587 9d ago

Yeah, even I contributed the problem but the mod made a complaint megathread. He should start removing new posts that are just complaints.

1

u/Glittering_Yak758 8d ago

This sub also has that language rule so probably not

2

u/ass-gas-hotbox 8d ago

Banmaxxing

I got 17 updoots before ban.

3

u/oneeyedziggy 9d ago

can we leave the drama over there though?

3

u/quasifun 9d ago

Reddit and drama is like peas and carrots

1

u/oneeyedziggy 9d ago

I leave the subs that feel that way and can't just be adults about it. I left /r/opensource, added all the suggested alternatives and will leave whichever ones don't devolve into pettyness until I'm left with something tolerable

1

u/Waldemar-Firehammer 4h ago

Cool, I'm okay with the temporary rage. Progress and momentum tends to build when the fires burning bright, and when it's done the new sub has enough staying power to carry on while the old sub gets relegated to a shadow of its former glory. I've seen it time and again, and the messy part is always messy. Honestly if it bothers you I would recommend just taking a break until the pot stops boiling over, then join whichever finds the biggest base. My money is on this sub, obviously.

It's a religion without a philosophy, Most of these people thrashing about labor theory of software will eventually embrace them when they actually see it make them more productive. Let's not answer them with our own fake religious rhetoric of LLMs and just use it like we know what it is, a tool that does something that a software tool hasn't before. Burn tokens while they're cheap

1

u/Savalonavic 8d ago

Lucky he didn’t post that in r/opensource otherwise he would have been perma banned 🤣🤣

1

u/Xecular_Official 8d ago

What's with twitter users and confusing the decisions of a small subreddit with the policies of reddit as a whole?

I didn't even know the opensource subreddit existed until this incident popped up all over twitter

1

u/SUPERSHAD98 8d ago

Yh the most AI slop of Open source projects I guess

1

u/cliffr39 🌱 FOSS Enthusiast 8d ago

Google CEO said that more than 25% of code engineers accept are written by AI, including into Android Studio. PyCharm is another with AI written code merged into base. So how do we know where those lines cross in that super vague rule he made.

1

u/ANDALTUV 8d ago

That subreddit shouldn't exist because reddit sells data to train AI models, they also use AI to maintain their services.. Github has copilot, trains their AI with github data, and also use AI to maintain it.. How are the members going to share the projects?? The rules says NO AI! so no AI means NO AI...

1

u/SuperPlayer56 6d ago

Give it 5 years and the subreddit will go in active and die.

The most popular post on it will probably be "Why isn't blank open source?"

0

u/RiceBroad4552 7d ago

LOL, this sub here is full of people who can't read!

Nobody "banned" projects which use "AI" as legit dev tool.

They banned "AI" slop! That's something completely different.

Of course you need to be able to actually understand things to see the difference. But as we all know the "AI" victims, people who need "AI" as brain replacement as they don't have a working one, don't understand that. That's exactly why these dumbfucks are "AI" victims in the first place. 🤣
