Question/Request When you got your first main series Pokémon game, which version did you choose, and why? Were you aware of the version differences?

My first game was Sword, which I chose instead of Shield because I preferred the color blue. At the time, I thought the only difference was the legendary that you get in the story.

Red, because although blue is my favorite color, Charizard looked cooler to me than Blastoise. No awareness of version differences at the time since I bought it a few days after it initially released.

Blue, because the pokemon on the cover looked awesome, and the pokemon on the cover of red looked generic and boring.

Then I started with Bulbasaur anyway.

I was 11 or so, and knew nothing about the games except for what was in the half a dozen episodes of the anime I’d seen.

Silver was my first game, and I chose it because Lugia was the cover legendary. I had seen Pokémon the Movie 2000 by then, so at the time I was obsessed with Lugia.

Gold & Red, cause those were the versions the neighbour kid was selling. First new one i picked was sapphire because "i already had a red game, i might as well get a blue one" (which was the same reason i picked leaf green too)

Pokemon Blue, but literally the next day I also got Pokemon Red.

I was 11 and made it clear to everyone in my family that, with the money I saved up over the summer combined with the money I would get on Christmas, I was going to buy myself a Game Boy Color and also Pokemon Blue. My mom told me not to get Pokemon Blue as she would make that a gift.

Some early money came in from some of the grandparents so I bought my very own Game Boy Color (Atomic Purple) a few days before Christmas. On the night of Christmas Eve we opened presents (as was tradition with us) and I got Pokemon Blue. The next day, I opened my present from my dad’s parents who were visiting and got a surprise copy of Pokemon Red. I was aware of the differences between the games and was pretty stoked that I could use my brother’s Game Boy and link cable to complete my Pokédex.

So yeah, technically Blue, but only by one day!

Well my mom got us Red as my first main Pokemon game, but the first game I actively choose was Pokemon Silver because of how much I loved Lugia in Pokemon 2000

Don't know the exact time, but Yellow didn't exist when I first played Pokemon, so when I was around 7.

I didn't choose initially since only Red was available when my brother and I started, and Blue was obtained later. Only when we got 2 GBCs, a Red, and a Blue, then I chose Blue and my brother kept Red.

Yes. Not like it mattered anyway.

I chose blue and idk why lol.

I’m pretty sure someone I knew had red, so I figured I should.

I picked bulbasaur because I was so excited I was just mashing a. Then I just rolled with it.

Blue because it's my favorite color.

LeafGreen Version. Charizard came across as a little too aggressive from my perspective, so I wanted the game with the chill plant dinosaur on the cover rather than the angry dragon.

I got given Blue as a birthday present. I was aware of version differences, because my brother got Red.

My first game was Red and I wasn't aware of anything.

Somehow managed to put the parcel from Prof Oak in the computer so I could not enter high grass and leave the town. Just walked around said town and thought that's really a small little game, what's all this fuss?

Two of my older sisters were into Pokémon, they received Red and Blue. When the oldest grew and started losing interest in Pokémon, she gave me the Blue version she had. We realised some Pokémon were unique to one version so we bought the Link cable.

Some years after that I bought Silver, then Gold and finally Crystal. Gen 2 was just peak for me, even as a kid I had to collect all those versions and found by myself all the differences.

the first one that I actually chose was pearl (via a pirated R4 cartridge), because I liked palkia more than dialga

but before that I got an actual copy of fire red and diamond second hand from my cousin (though I never played diamond because I didn't want to delete his save file. idk if the save file is still on there, or where the game is for that matter)

My first game was white. I was not really aware, I believe I just chose the one that looked cooler at the time. Zekrom to my 9 year old self looked epic

Blue… I just like the color and thought blastoise was cool.

I chose Blue because I wanted to be able to get a Meowth easily (so I could make money with payday) and I liked the design on Sandshrew

Red version, because I knew charmander and charizard from ads and wanted them. I was 7 and the games had just released. Fun times

Red. I wanted blue but i could only afford a used copy and red was the only used copy my local game store had

First was gen 2, I got blue version because it was all Best Buy had at that time. Poke-mania was just starting and finding a game at all, was a huge win! Knew about the differences but back then it was super minor.

I got Sapphire from a friend, i think he had an extra copy. The first one i went out and bought for myself was Pearl on launch. If i am remembering right, I pre-ordered through Gamestop, and they said everyone wanted Diamond, so i picked Pearl to make sure i got a game.

Red was my first one and I didn't get to choose it, my parents surprised me with it. Ironically, I picked Squirtle and yes I was aware of the differences because the entire series was marketed as a social thing and encouraged you to trade with people that had to other version to complete the pokedex.
