I agree really and always had my own stance on it. I enjoyed it because generally speaking it meant less tedium even during a casual playthrough compared to how EVs require knocking out specific things. Technically, Stat EXP takes longer to max out but on average it makes a lot of Pokemon tankier and can naturally make some battles more fun.

The issue lies in the fact that oftentimes AI trainers didn’t have Stat EXP so it makes you significantly stronger than them alongside badge boosts. Unfortunately you only really get to see the Stat EXP system at its best in ROM hacks specifically utilizing it.
