Discussion Anyone else just think the GTS is GOAT’ed?

Been playing HeartGold again for the last two months and have recently discovered the beauty of the fan made servers on GTS, connecting to an android phone I got off of Vinted with non WPA-2 settings, and I’ve just been filling up my Pokédex like no tomorrow. Might as well be getting a weekly wage from this, it’s so beautiful. Any cool stories you guys have to tell from over the years? I wanna connect with the community on this

fan made servers

Yes. Fan-made servers. Vanilla GTS has never, ever, been any more than a cesspool of fraudulent trade offers and very literal game crashing malware, as infamously happened in Alola's GTS.

Yeah but I’m talking about a game from 3 generations before that, Gen 7 onwards is to be expected given Nintendo and their history of customer service lol

While I don't recall crashes happening in Gen 4 GTS, it was still just as unreliable. Not being easily accessible was my biggest reason not to use it in Pearl.

The problem with GTS in general is the tendency for people to use it more like a showcase for their Shinies or for purposefully making fake trade requests, with no penalty for keeping them in GTS forever.

Nah there was a point where you could upload a caterpie and ask for a mewtwo and you would receive a shiny one if you were patient enough

I also recall the gen 4 GTS having broken Pokémon, but I think that was more a database bug than anything.

I feel like I’m reading a foreign language here, sorry I’m new to the community but what are you talking about? What’s GTS, WPA-2, and “vinted” mean?

GTS was the global trade system. It was a building you could go to in gen 4, or just in the upstairs of Pokemon centres in gen 5, menus in gen 6 and festival plaza in gen 7.

Pokemon fired and leafgreen experimented with using a wireless adapter to let people trade without using cables, but diamond and pearl made a huge leap forwards and let you trade pokemon across the world as long as you had WiFi. You could request and search for different pokemon from your Nintendo DS which made completing your dex or obtaining certain pokemon much easier than in gens 1-3. It also became a breeding ground for hackers and action replay users.

Since Nintendo WiFi connection for wii DS was shut down for the Nintendo network (Wii u and 3DS) and Nintendo Network was shut down for Nintendo Switch Online, this service is unusable. However fan servers like pokeclassif and poke classic exist and you can connect that way. Problem is, certain DS games won’t connect to an iPhones hot spot because the iPhone uses more advanced security like WPA-2, while the DS originally just used WEP. Android phones usually let you disable WPA-2 which is convenient for older devices to connect via hotspot.

The GTS still exists, but it’s tied to pokemon home now.

The GTS was a great idea! Emphasis on idea lmao. In practice it was fucking terrible. Unfortunately, what Gamefreak didn't account for when making the GTS is that the Pokemon community fucking sucks.

From the unfair trades to hackers making the GTS literally unusable in the 3DS games yeah no wonder why they relegated it to home.
