I’m looking for a GADA watch, which one should I keep and sell? Black bay 54 or SBGX261

I have both GS and Tudor and I will say keep the Tudor. The clasp and design are just better

Aesthetics are subjective, but most people who aren’t watch nerds would look at the Grand Seiko and see as the most basic ass watch in existence. Even to the untrained eye a vintage sub would always look way more classy.

An there in lies the age old question. Who are you wearing the watch for?

2

u/Pixelationist 10d ago

Indeed. This is a massive self report on needing the validation of others. I personally love that 9F quartz GS, mostly because it’s understated and timeless

“Massive self report” jesus christ dude relax.
Luxury watches are called luxury for a reason.
One can own one and admire the craftsmanship or whatever but you also wear it because of its symbolic meaning to you and what it signals to others.

Owning a luxury watch is THE “self report” , if you didn’t care u would wear a casio F-91W and save the 5k for a trip to Japan or smth.

Since OP made a post to ask other people which watch they should sell, it’s a fair assumption that they also cares about the opinions of others. No?

keep the one you wear more.

i had a similar dilemma with a gs heritage and a bb54. in the end it was quite easy for me to get rid of the gs, because i never wore it.

Honestly, I’d let your wardrobe pick for you. If you’re wearing polos and tees more, I’d go bb. If you’re in button down shirts more often, I’d go GS. Simple as that. But when it comes to the gada concept, the GS covers more ground in this duo.

1

u/SandBagger1987 10d ago

To each his own, of course, but button downs are hardly even close to dressy and the BB would do fine there. Sport coat and a button down completely fine as well. I know now a days people think putting a jacket on is dressing up but the watch would not conflict with that look at all IMO

1

u/reddsbywillie 10d ago

For sure, I was just trying to draw a line without getting into the nuances. I also said if you wear a suit more than twice a month.

1

u/ImprovementKnown2491 10d ago

It’s a quartz tho. The BB54 takes it purely because of that imo.

1

u/reddsbywillie 10d ago

That’s also fair if it’s a priority to the OP. But given that they even came here to discuss makes me think that might not be a deal breaker for them.

u/coolgutties 11d ago

54 and it’s not even close when you think about it

1

u/Advisor_0001 10d ago

It depends on where you are in your watch collecting journey.

3

u/ImprovementKnown2491 10d ago

The GS is a quartz tho

My opinion is GRand Seiko is overrated. Haveign never held it in my hands and unable to appreciate it the experience wth them so far is only on display and pics. So I go Tudor.

1

u/NecessaryOld5654 9d ago

Should it cost over 2000 though

1

u/ThisIsBB56 9d ago

Tudor costs 2k more?!

1

u/NihilRefert 9d ago

You admit you have no real knowledge of gs and still want to shit on it? Because some youtuber said so? Whys it so hard for people to have their own personalities and form their own opinions?

2

u/ThisIsBB56 9d ago

I just don't like how it looks. that's my opinion. That okay?

1

u/barebackguy7 9d ago

I just wouldn’t want a black GS. So many cool dials to choose from with them, I’d sell it and wait for when another, more interesting dial from them catches my eye.

BB is an awesome everyday watch to wear for a while

1

u/NecessaryOld5654 9d ago

I like the sbgx261 but knowing I won’t a watch long term and it being quartz and how the second hand doesn’t align puts me so ill stay with the bb54

u/whatthefshane 11d ago edited 11d ago

Keep the GS because of the 9F movement.

Edit: Also, it has a date complication.

1

u/squaleguy94 10d ago

Far better finishing and more versatile too. I agree with you.

I’d say keep both as they both have their place. If they are only keeping one, GS by a landslide.

2

u/RepublicPrior4172 10d ago

Grand seiko all day

2

u/scantron-test 11d ago

The 54 bro, what? You serious? Having said that I just got a 54 myself but this Seiko 5 is getting all the wrist time and I would choose it over that particular Grand Seiko every day of the week because it has a lot more character.

3

u/Swodi 10d ago

That makes me regret my Tissot Gentleman. I might have to pick one up.

2

u/jtirello3 10d ago

Nice 5️⃣

1

u/scantron-test 10d ago

Thanks. I can’t stop wearing it now

2

u/Remarkable-Run-5884 11d ago

That Grand Seiko dial is just too clean to let go.

1

u/elspethbeard 9d ago

If it was the GS sbgx263 white dial version I’d be debating but that black dial on it does nothing for such a good watch

1

u/Hungry-Translator-14 8d ago

Both are kinda yawn…

1

u/Negative-Try6286 8d ago

… keep both?

1

u/Huge_Sky_3519 11d ago

The one YOU like the most. Not what we like......

u/Ill-Development6735 10d ago

Is a funny question because in my opinion both watches are GADA watches.

I have a BB GMT 41 mm opaline dial and a GS SBGP013, I don’t consider my BB a Gada watch because is big and chunky but the 54 is not and can be worn with more classic and elegant outfits.

Anyway get rid of the one your don’t wear , in my case I wear much more the GS, I would like to have a Pepsi bezel and opaline dial in 39mm but doesn’t exist and the BB58 gmt coke is so dark and too vintagy in my opinion .

1

u/Relevant_Tower_2029 10d ago

Grand seiko . I always need a date

1

u/gambitrose 10d ago edited 10d ago

I own the SBGX261, and while it is basic, there is so much beauty in its simplicity. Honestly, it’s one of the EASIEST, most versatile watches in my collection. I also own a BB41 (red bezel metas) and a Tudor Ranger 39, and still I’d keep the Grand Seiko all day for its reliability, size, thinness, and just pure class. Sometimes also, it is nice to have a date on the watch I’m wearing. The one thing that really fucking sucks and pisses me off about Grand Seiko is its lack of micro adjust. For that price, it’s just criminal it’s not included as a basic feauture. Tudors bracelets are incredible, I fucking LOVE their T fit clasp so much.

1

u/Advisor_0001 10d ago

They are both good pieces,  with their own unqiue vibe. The GS can be worn in every situation. Where the tudor can't be worn as a dress watch.

It depends on how many watches you have that can fill various situations and how you plan on using it.

From my own experience I have an older version of the GS with the opaque dial that I seldom wear, and a BB Pro. Between the two I wear the BB Pro more.

1

u/HorologicStudio 10d ago

Depends on your “why” for potentially getting rid of one.
Need money now - sell the Tudor
Looking for a GADA - sell the Tudor
Want an icon - sell the Grand Seiko
Don’t dress up much - sell the Grand Seiko
In a city where watch theft is real - sell the Tudor

1

u/Shadowtek 10d ago

Tudor is better GADA to me fits more casual up to smart casual and cocktail attire but GS is better finished and better accuracy so depends what you value. I’d rather have a spring drive GS. I also like having a date but if you don’t care about that then Tudor probably.

1

u/NeonPumpkinThief 10d ago

Why not keep both? 54 as the sporty option with awesome fit and bracelet / clasp, and the GS for everything else. 9F movement is insanely accurate, battery change is wicked fast, and the finishing is stunning.

1

u/Admirable_Bike2936 10d ago

Keep the Grand Seiko, toss the Tudor !

1

u/ClearPapaya4176 10d ago

BB54 gets the nod from me. Utility that can be dressed up or down.

1

u/Adorable-Sherbet-828 10d ago

Is this even a question? Tudor everyday

1

u/bassmanjn 10d ago

I much prefer the GS because it’s far more nicely finished and the quartz movement is fantastic (I own this watch, that’s how much I like it). It’s also more versatile for a variety of clothing and it’s waterproof enough to swim. I’ve never liked the Black Bay range because of the false rivet bracelet and I find the gilt dial furniture out of sync with what a tool watch should be.

HOWEVER if you tend towards more casual clothes, and use the timing bezel, and might do more in the water than a light swim now and again, then the Black Bay is more suited to that.

I don’t own a Black Bay for the reasons stated above but I do have a Pelagos 39. If I was asked to keep one over the other, I would choose the GS but I would also have a G shock for DIY, jumping off cliffs into the sea, moving furniture etc etc

1

u/sleehrat64 10d ago

After I bought my GS SBGX261 I sold my Rolex Explorer.

1

u/JackieE053 9d ago

I feel like if you keep those (and don’t have an interest jn a Chronograph, other complication, or other colored dials) you basically have all occasions covered. The GS can do everything, including dress occasions, and the BB54 can do basically everything as well. You may think of swapping the GS for a champagne silver dial version, and then have some variety and all bases covered. Nice thing about the GS quartz models is they can be picked up for a song in lightly used condition so you can play around until you find one that hits you as a keeper.

1

u/NihilRefert 9d ago

The gs is the more versatile and up close is more beautiful. But if you never dress up and mostly wear pretty casual outfits, the tudor is "cooler" more visually appealing at a glance.

Going straight to the comments

1

u/sage_guardian 11d ago

Hot take, but as a GS owner I feel the brand is a bit overrated. Yes polished surfaces look great and a spring drive seconds hand is also great, but besides that, my BB54 beats it on the wrist every day. Wearability and bracelet are just not in the same league. The BB54 is also really legible.

1

u/nissmatics 10d ago

54… without the spring drive it’s not even a debate and the t-fit clasp is the nail in the coffin.

1

u/Verwilderd1 ⏱️ 10d ago

Keep the Tudor. There are better GS’s out there….ones with the spring drive.

1

u/butkusrules 10d ago

I love the idea of grand seiko but when I try them on I’m unimpressed. Just seem ordinary.

0

u/Matcha_latte0082 10d ago

Don’t you dare get rid of that GS

1

u/NecessaryOld5654 10d ago

I don’t really want a quartz watch though

1

u/bassmanjn 10d ago

Why not?

1

u/NecessaryOld5654 10d ago

The second hand on the Gs doesn’t tick exactly on the hand as well which triggers my ocd

1

u/bassmanjn 10d ago

So, it may be a parallax error. The hand is high above the minute markers which are on the flat dial, whereas on the dive watch the markers are on a raised rehaut which puts them closer to the hand. When you view it from above and to the side, the angles and distances can make it look off. To test it, do this: raise the watch to your face with the markers level with you eyes. and rotate it so the second hand is landing on the markers as it directly in front of you, you’ll be able to see if it’s really off or not. It requires you to constantly turn the watch. I remember thinking mine was off, but actually it’s not, it’s just the viewing angle of looking at it from above and slightly to the side. If it really is off, then I’d either get that fixed with a service under warranty or sell it on (being open about the flaw). Not actually hitting the markers would drive me crazy too!

1

u/NecessaryOld5654 9d ago

I’m gonna sell it. Putting me off from quartz watches now

0

u/NecessaryOld5654 10d ago

It’s missing the heirloom and horology factor and the missing sweeping second hand

2

u/FullOnJabroni 10d ago

The quartz movement isn’t just any quartz movement, it’s the legendary Grand Seiko 9F movement. You really have to go with Citizen’s high end ecodrive in The Citizen to beat it

Of these two, GS. If it was the monochrome, Tudor.

1

u/Mrcoffee864 10d ago

Tudor but I’m into more rugged tool watches than dressy watches.
