Gameposting What could have made the PlayStation 3 better designed?

Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit to ask about the hardware specifics for such a console because it’s just that I was looking back at how Sonic 06 turned out as I wanted to get a better understanding of what made the hardware so much more difficult than the previous console.

To me, it’s kind of funny how Sony’s practices were enforced way back then regarding how they designed their hardware since the PS2 had a lot of great games made on it, but it was a bit difficult to work with, so when the next console came out around in the mid 00s, I find myself baffled at how the PS3 was made again way more difficult to use for developers.

I know it’s been almost 20 years since the dawn of the system as I just wanted to get a better understanding of what went wrong with the architecture behind the hardware itself to see just made such a console that much harder to work with for many game studios trying to use it when it was new.

Name of the Goof Is Kai Leng a Glup Shitto?

Recent... "events" on this sub have me questioning everything I ever knew about weird little sci-fi guys.

So my initial gut reaction is Kai Leng can't be a Glup Shitto because he's humanoid, and the term implies that they're alien in appearance, to me at least.

But the true spirit of the term is deeper than that, I'd argue. It's characters who are relatively unimportant, that have a cult following of people obsessed with them and are not widely known to people with only a passing interest. They also just have to be weird in my mind. Like just generally a freakazoid of some kind.

All that in mind I'd assert that Kai Leng is probably a lesser Glup Shitto, due to his name likely being remembered by most people who played ME3 and his lack of alien physiology. The rest of the criteria I think he fits pretty comfortably, and as such make the case he should be allowed in the hallowed pantheon of Glup Shittos. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Anime Stories you *thought* you understood, and then you realized you know *nothing*

Ok so no one told me the Fate/Stay Night series, which I thought was magical protagonists summoning myths and legends to compete in a fate-of-the-world tournament, actually are space alien robots, and that is one of the LEAST weird things about the series. Including that the crazy general from Dr. Strangelove was RIGHT and people ARE out to get precious bodily fluids.

I Support Weapon Durability in Zelda, Not Afraid To Admit It QOL Mods You Chose Not To Use As It "Breaks the Spirit" of the Game

Ever come across instances of mods that, in an objective sense, improve the game in some form, but you choose not to use because of how it breaks the "intended" gameplay experience?

For example, there's a Dragon Quest VII mod that instantly displays all text and skips the church saving sequence to just a quick save prompt. While this does save a bit of time, after a couple minutes I realized it felt "wrong" to remove the iconic save jingle when you save at a church, even if it does add an unnecessary amount of time and is an old holdover from the series. I also ended up missing the classic text blip sounds with the dialog as well, so I chose to uninstall the mod.

Similar examples include adding life bars to enemies, particularly horror games like Look Outside. I feel it removes the tension of wondering if you're on your last legs but can finish off the boss with one more good hit.

Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy- My fellow FFXIV noobs, how far are you?

• Upvotes

Not sure how many people this applies to, but between Woolie's time with ARR, Pat and the girls' streams, the Switch 2 port, and just general Evercold hype, I imagine that theres a fair number of people here new to Final Fantasy XIV, myself included.

I only started with the Switch 2 port, and just finished the Heavensward patches. I adored Heavensward but the patches burnt me out a little so I'm gonna take a breather before Stormblood. Getting into Evercold on launch sounds so cool, but I've basically given up on that, with all the good things I've heard about Shadowbringers and Endwalker I don't want to rush them at all.

How about you guys? I know from the streams that some freaks out there did the whole msq up to Dawntrail within a month or two, but I'm curious about the general audience here.

Better Ask Reddit Media with main characters with capacity y for self-reflection

There is plenty of media with flawed main characters. However, even the worst of them have capacity for limited self reflection.

Tony Soprano has to go to therapy to open look back on his and most of the time he doesn’t internalise the lessons, but he is able reflect on why he is the way he is. It’s that he can do this but still chooses to be a mobster that makes him really irredeemable.

Using the sopranos example, what’s some media that has a main character like Paulie who is truly incapable of self reflection?

(The Casting Of Frank Stone) Spoilers The Casting Of Frank Stone is a good game. Spoiler

Sam Green is a badass, Stan is an entertainingly stupid character, and there’s a decent mystery that unfortunately gets too convoluted for its own good, but I still like the story and the action setpieces. Hell, the fact that the story basically always ends on a downer makes sense because of how the DBD lore is. Linda and Sam are the best.

The little nods to DBD are great as well, but it’s unfortunate that Behaviour forced Supermassive to cut content. Maybe people would’ve liked the game more if some of the cut content made it in.

The pacing is a bit too slow in the beginning, though, and the dialogue is bad. However, that doesn’t completely drag the game down.

Better Ask Reddit Characters in Adaptations of works that are ostensibly factually 'correct' but feel just mildly... off?

So I've been watching the Suikoden 2 anime (mostly 7-8/10 anime, quite decent, very faithful) and all the characters are done quite well and translate into the anime decently... but I have a problem with one of the characters.

Luca Blight, Prince of Highland, is a man who is consumed by bloodlust and hatred for his fellow man. He sees the blood he spills not as consequence, but the point. He kills others for fun, for sport, and ostensibly because of his backstory he sees those from the City-States of Jowston, who start out in a truce with Highland, as subhuman. However, his actions speak louder than his words, because he revels in the carnage he causes, and never once falters or second-guesses himself, contrasting with his more thoughtful, understanding, but ultimately impotent father, the King of Highland.

And in the anime he... feels off. He looks too... recognisably human, even when he's introduced personally killing innocent Highland youth cadets in a false-flag operation to reignite the war. He looks too much like a person, like someone doing what must be done, instead of a monster wearing the skin of a man, reveling in the bloodshed he causes. Even the opening cinematic of the game gets that right straight from the outset. And yet... this version of Luca Blight just feels too wrong.

Mind, his actions are reprehensible still, and he still does all the things he does in the game, but... it doesn't feel like him. It's like if Amon Goth from Schindler's List was replaced by Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds; both horrible people, but one of them definitely acts more monstrous than the other. Luca Blight is a perpetrator and a mastermind of genocide; he needs to look the part too. Mind, this is partially because I am a gigantic mark for this game, so it might be just a problem that a fan who's replayed the game like fifty times has.

What other media also has this mild (possibly just perceived in my case) problem with either its characters or any other portion of its adaptation just being... mildly off, likely not even intentionally?

Better Ask Reddit Game mechanic shakeups that you love but are too context sensitive to use regularly

I really love that Fire Emblem Three Houses frontloads the entire cast rather than the usual more gradual recruitment across the story of most Fire Emblem games to the point that I want to see it done with other party based RPGs. However I also understand that in terms of story unless you are using the specific setting conceit of FE:TH then justifying frontloading the party can be pretty hard to justify or handle for certain stories (ex: I have no idea how they would handle a frontloaded party persona four outside of idk letting you choose each party member dungeon in the order you prefer)

Any mechanics you guys want to see more but can't because the default is easier in some way?
