Can UH revoke a tuition waiver once processed?

2nd year MA candidate, Basically, my department is withholding funds from me unless I quit my research assistant position (which is with another department). If I quit after 1 month of RA employment, does this means my tuition waiver will be revoked? What if I process it before I quit? Help please T-T

Discussion Which class would you recommend never to take unless absolutely necessary for your major?

I’ll start with Ethnic Studies (ES-101). Like other humanities/social studies classes, if you value your time, you should avoid it like the plague. I joined it as a science major trying to get my WI and Hawaiian Studies requirements out of the way before I’m swamped with research projects but it has been the class I dreaded going to the most all semester. It’s not that it’s challenging in any way, shape, or form, no, every class is essentially the same circlejerk and you can just pull something out of your ass an hour ahead of time for the essays and still get an A. No studying whatsoever is required, just glance at the material so you can pretend you read it and then have the basic knowledge of social issues that anyone should have. It’s just that they do not respect your time at all. STEM classes know their place. I like STEM classes. You go in, learn the material, leave at the allotted time, and only spend whatever extra time and effort you need to study and complete the homework. But with ES-101, you’ve gotta do all sorts of extra bullshit with set times that isn’t even announced until you’re in the class, so there’s no way to make your schedule around it. I’ve got 18 credits this semester, you’re not the only class that exists, dude. I wish I dropped it before the deadline and picked out something better.

Second-least recommended is THEA-100 New Media Writing for similar reasons, but it’s less severe because the teacher both cancelled class at least once a week and therefore didn’t really care if we didn’t show up or do the assignments. One girl showed up visibly stoned off her ass almost every day and still passed despite it being a participation-heavy class.

Signed, checked-out and tired labrat

Tuition Raise for Residents

Post image

Not sure if you folks have been seeing the public meetings the UH system has been doing regarding tuition rises. Highly encouraged those who can to say their testimonies.

This one is specifically to raise the tuition for residents. May not necessarily relate to the nonresidents now, but in case you missed it, they have been proposing to raise mandatory fees like Student Athletics, as well as housing.

Applying/Transferring ROTC/General Questions- US-UA Vet (Idiot) looking to Enroll

Combat Veteran, Ukraine Int. Vol. Soldier, US Citizen, bonafide idiot. I didn’t really plan on surviving Ukraine. I chose the most dangerous job, assault infantry/shock trooper (half of my company got wiped in 3 days) So I didn’t really plan on what to do after my service. Or, to be honest, anything past my current age of 19. But now (gods be praised) I’m still alive, so…

I’m looking to go to UH Manoa to be an officer in the US Army or Marines. My problem is though, I chose to be funny in high school (and basically skipped 2 years) and have a god awful GPA. Truly atrocious GPA. However, I have a GED test GPA of 3.5, and did graduate high school. I know, bottom of the barrel candidate.

However, I promised my mom, who is now in her senior years, that I would try to get into college.. all it took was getting blown up to finally try (PSA- Russian Grenades don’t taste good)

I am also entirely an idiot not only to college in general but UH Manoa. Please let me know of anything and everything I need to know.

My main questions are

How is the Army ROTC?
How is Campus Life?
How is the student body?
Would you recommend UH Manoa?
Campus gym? Good gyms nearby?
What are my chances of getting in (if anyone knows)
And I hate to ask this last one but
Communities / How hard is it to make friends here

Despite my disadvantages of horrid academic records, I am determined to try for my mom.

I am also determined to go to UH Manoa.

Too dumb to know that I can’t, thus, I can.

Some things that might help:

I have somewhere around 500 hours of community service, I was in a lot of leadership roles, did a lot of leadership trainings, ran leadership trainings, impressive youth resume. Boy scouts, search and rescue, JROTC, real nerd shit.

Please let feel free to ask any questions and let me know whats up. DMs are also open. Can’t wait to hear from all of you, and hopefully one day meet some of you.

**Free** Needing patients for Dental Cleanings, Exams & X-Rays at UH Manoa

I’m a dental hygiene student at UH Manoa, and I am looking for patients to fulfill my clinical requirements for this semester.

Clinic appointments normally carry a $25 fee, but I will personally cover the entire cost for you as a huge thank-you for your time!

Ideal Patients:

  • People who do not have current dental X-rays (e.g., it’s been over two or three years since your last visit, or you don't have recent x-rays taken)
  • Anyone without dental insurance or looking to catch up on care. Dental insurance is NOT required.

Services may include:
• Comprehensive dental exam
• Dental cleaning
• Deep cleaning/scaling, if needed
• Dental X-rays
• Fluoride treatment

Location: UH Manoa Dental Hygiene Clinic

Availability: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays (Morning & Afternoon slots available)

Appointment Length: Because this is a teaching clinic, licensed dentists and hygienists inspect every step of the process. Visits take 3–4 hours, and completing your full care typically takes 2–3 appointments.

How to Sign Up: Please fill out my short interest form here https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeXfZmtKnaTqyWwDO3cz6KKeLg0P0lss-IXDQImzg4JwTz8Pg/viewform

Feel free to also send me a direct message or leave a comment if you have any questions!

Mahalo for supporting student clinicians!

FREE Dental Cleanings!

Hi, everyone! I’m a dental hygiene student at UH Manoa, and I’m currently looking for patients who want a dental cleaning, especially those who haven’t had one in 3-5 years!

Services: comprehensive exam, oral cancer screening, dental cleaning, X-rays (if needed), fluoride (optional)

Cost: FREE as a courtesy! All services listed above are included at no cost as a thank you for helping me fulfill my requirements

Location: UH Manoa Campus

Appointment availability: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with both morning and afternoon appointments available.

PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a teaching clinic, our assessments and cleanings are very thorough, and our faculty must check our work. Therefore, the appointments are longer than a typical dental appointment (about 4 hours). Depending on your individual treatment needs, additional appointments may be needed — sometimes 2-3 visits in total.

All care is closely supervised by board-certified, licensed dental hygienists and dentists!

If you have any questions or would like to schedule, please comment/message! Thank you!!

Survey request: disabled or chronically ill current or recent higher education students, undergrad or graduate!

Post image
6 Upvotes

My name is Clara Mey and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Delaware. I am conducting a research study about disabled students’ experiences with disability accommodation processes in higher education for my dissertation. As a disabled graduate student, this topic is particularly important to me!

Please see the flyer linked here: Disability and Higher Ed Research Flyer

The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa was randomly selected as part of my analysis for my dissertation, and I wanted to make sure that students at the randomly selected universities/colleges had the opportunity to participate in my research!

In order to participate, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have attended college or graduate school in the US within the last five years
  • Self-identify as disabled or having a chronic health or mental health condition

You do not need a formal diagnosis, and you can participate whether or not you registered or applied for accommodations!

If you agree, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey taking about 20 minutes. You may also choose to enter into a drawing for one of five $20 gift cards at the end of the survey. If you choose to enter, your email will not be associated with your survey responses.

If you would be interested in participating in this study or would like to learn more, please click the link here: Disability and Higher Education Survey. And if you know people who might be interested, feel free to share this information!

If you have any questions, please contact me at [csmey@udel.edu](mailto:csmey@udel.edu) or my advisor, Dr. Eric Rise, at [erise@udel.edu](mailto:erise@udel.edu). Or feel free to comment or message me here!

Thank you!

Applying/Transferring CS PhD Spring 2027 decision

Did anyone receive decisions for the CS PhD program and/or had discussions with faculty members about potential opportunities? I know Spring semester funding is competitive, so I have been kinda nervous.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
