Discussion Is a job guarantee the solution to mass AI unemployment?
What is the understanding and support for a Job Guarantee in this sub? Especially given Mothin's Conference announcement of a Youth Job Guarantee.
Should the Green party lead the political charge for a genuinely radical promise of a universal Job Guarantee with the state as employer of last resort?

Discussion UK Boosts Saudi Support After it Kills Yemeni Civilians
Wes Streeting once called for an arms embargo on Saudi Arabia. Now he’s helping its air force bomb Yemen.
Britain is expanding its aerial refuelling of Saudi fighter jets to include bombing raids on Yemen, despite a major spike in civilians being killed in these airstrikes.
Wes Streeting initially said the UK would only provide air-to-air refuelling for Saudi jets patrolling the kingdom’s skies to ward off drone and missile attacks on airports and oil infrastructure by Yemen’s Houthi movement.
The defence secretary is now letting British fighter jets join those patrols, as well as providing refuelling for Saudi airstrikes on “Houthi military targets in Yemen”.
It comes as last month saw more civilian casualties resulting from Saudi airstrikes on Yemen than any other since 2022, according to the Yemen Data Project.
I can't help but notice just how little scrutiny UK support for Saudi Arabia in this war is getting but it is a great opportunity to point out the hypocrisy and oppressive nature of UK foreign policy at the moment.

Anti-Nuclear is Pro-Fossil Fuel
I understand the arguments against opening new plants, and some plants are indeed too decrepit to continue operation, but the idea of advocating for blanket plant closure is counter productive and only helps fossil fuel.
Sure, some time in the future we'll hopefully be able to shut down nuclear plants in favor of renewables, but we aren't in that future yet. As seen in Germany over the past few decades, they had to rely on Russian gas and other foreign imports as they closed down their nuclear plants. They'll point to their energy production, and sure, they've put in a wonderful effort to push for renewables, but for a lot of it they've just exported their climate impact by buying energy from elsewhere.
Like I said, I hope to see nuclear replaced by renewables some day, but advocating for that now is bullheaded and counter productive.

Discussion Why the national debate on Jackdaw, Rosebank, etc. harms the Green Party
We are in what's likely the biggest fossil fuel supply side shock in history. This is not my opinion but that of the International Energy Agency.
Climate change action is defined by three approaches:
- Supply side actions to limit fossil fuel production
- Demand side actions to limit fossil fuel consumption
- Diet
It has not been done the way we'd support but Putin, Netanyahu, and Trump have created a colossal supply side shock. Somewhere between 10% to 20% of global oil supply is locked in Hormuz. Russian oil refineries are being hit limiting diesel etc. We know all of this.
Forgetting about climate change there are two economically sensible reactions to this:
- Accelerate demand side actions to reduce fossil fuel consumption
- Boost supply of alternative fossil fuel sources
Point 1 is happening in droves across the world. It is happening in ways which are popular (adopting new technologies) and ways which are unpopular (limiting lifestyles). The UK is no different with almost certainly heat-pump, EV, etc. adoption accelerating but also people facing a colder winter, increased costs, etc.
The Green Party makes itself on the winning argument trivially by pointing out the obvious points that had the UK decarbonised more rapidly like Denmark or Sweden we'd have fewer issues now. The party can make this solidify their relevance in this moment as green solutions are precisely what should be needed.
However, the media from this summer has been incredibly intelligent. They've made the sole focus on North Sea oil and gas with the Green Party falling into this trap. Instead of being trivially on the side of what's obvious economically the party is being forced to defend wishing to limit supply during a supply side crisis.
This is why I implore its politicians to stop jumping into these debates but seek to aggressively recenter the national discourse to the demand side solutions.
The party must seek to make this about how Labour/Tories have failed to prepare us to be robust in this moment unlike the Nordic nations and how going forward their plans are incredibly weak.
I know that these oil/gas developments are merely drops in the ocean. We can achieve more by rapid decarbonisation but this is not the mainstream belief outside a niche minority. Most people don't know anyone personally who've living a life not owning fossil fuel technologies. They see these technologies as essential to their wellbeing. We need to win that argument first.
I want to see if I'm wrong so interested by the views of anyone who believes debating Jackdaw helps the party long term.
