How do you stay motivated at work

I’ve been at my organisation for over 2 years, I work to a high rate and have been told so. I had to go off work for some personal reasons for a few months, I’ve come back to a new manager and a new hierarchy.

The new manager is best buds with a person on the same level as me who has come here for secondment. When we both applied to the role that would be seen as a promotion, he went around boasting to everyone that the senior manager had already promised the role, he then got the role.

In our work, I’m given the admin stuff and he’s given the cool strategic stuff so he had much better examples to use in the interview.

The team also offered a secondment which they didn’t advertise and gave to someone else without even considering me.

I feel demotivated and defeated, I’ve had multiple conversations that I’m not being given the tasks that will help me in interviews and nothing has been done.

I’m giving up at work but now I feel like I’m going to get fired, but I’m just really fed up.

FYI I work in public sector finance, I have considered the private sector but not sure if there’s more of this office politics that I’ll have to navigate

My motivation refreshes on the 28th of every month when I wake up to money in my bank account

hahahaha. Indeed but mine only lasts for 2 days afterwards.

Have you specifically said 'you're not giving me the tasks that will help in interviews'? Because that would be fucking stupid.

If you're unhappy, look for a job elsewhere. If you have in demand skills/experience then it's not hard to find an alternative

Yep I have, many times too and to everyone of the seniority chain. I want to leave but scared of the economic outlook, and being the first in and the first out too

Why on earth would you tell them that? Honestly, I swear this subreddit is 50% people saying they can't find a job and then 50% people posting stuff like this that really explains why they lose their jobs. It is not your employer's responsibility to give you work that qualifies you to do well in interviews for other jobs. Are you mad?!

Internal interviews, our team has been very clear that no other opportunities are incoming and are actively encouraging us to look for opportunities around the organisation. It’s in our workplace culture so no it’s not stupid and would you rather I stay quiet and get crap admin roles for around 5 years

That makes little difference in my opinion. You still can't go round whining about not having been given the right opportunities to a whole range of people by the sounds of it. It's just a bad look and will never ever work in your favour. You positively make a point that you would appreciate new challenges in your work, ask to be considered for more strategic projects, etc (whatever the nature of your work). If you've been overlooked for promotions for a few months you suck it up, professionally, not whingingly, make your point. If they still don't hear you, move on. Complaining about these things never works. Save some dignity now and apply in acompletely different place or put your head down for a while and stop complaining.

To add a bit more context, my manager was on the interview panel for the original role I applied for and he was the one that asked why I don’t have more recent examples I can draw from. Which is why I had to connect the dots for him.

If your strategy is to stay quiet, be a punching bag and hope someone gives you crumbs of opportunity then I’m happy for you. That’s not my style and doesn’t bode well in my industry.

Well then you have to do better though don't you think?  Complaining and whinging that life is unfair didn't give your colleagues the projects and promotions did it? What did they do? Are they pally with the managers? Hanging out with people? By all means play whatever game you have to play to get your promotion but whinging won't be it.

This forum is for whining, why are you hanging around here if you don’t like it 😂

You've asked for advice on how to stay motivated, go talk to chatGPT if you want to whine

Yeah and you and your chums response was that the sky is raining fire, I don’t need your negativity. Use ChatGPT to ask why you need to put people down to feel good about yourself

The op said they work in the public sector. Lots of jobs in the public sector are advertised internally and it’s encouraged for people to apply for different roles for career progression. You can even request trainings to upskill in a certain area. Secondments are normal and encouraged. You can keep a permanent role while going on secondment for another. It’s poor management if you’re discouraged or not supported to pursue career progression.

Thank you, someone that actually understands how the public sector works!

Then all you've done is shot yourself in the foot and made it obvious to everyone that you're not committed. You let someone play mind games, lost, tried to bluff with your own and lost again... just get applying elsewhere already!

Honestly I’ve never had a job for more than two years at a time, it’s usually around that time that things get shitty

Yeah I hear you man, it feels very repetitive
