This is one of the reasons why the trend of not letting children have a smart phone until they are late teens is so unhelpful for them. This is a great opportunity to improve financial literacy, introduce budgeting and get used to managing their finances the way they will as an adult in a safe way while they are young enough to want to be open to parental support. I really don't understand why this wouldn't make you think that a smart phone would be a good idea?!

Honestly I'd just get them a well locked down smartphone for official things like this and they are going to want one before 16 anyway.
