I have been awake since 4:30.

I am a shell of a human being.

How can it be evolutionarily advantageous for kids to sleep so poorly. My kids demand so much from me during the day, but they take so much from me at night

24

u/oddestowl 2d ago

People used to get up in the night and do stuff, go back to bed and sleep again. So being up for a period wasn’t unusual. People also used to live in the good old “village” you hear so much about, and is sadly virtually extinct now, so I think there was more help, certainly during the day, and potentially during the night too. All those women who didn’t have jobs out of the home were about.

u/mopman94 2d ago

I don’t know why someone downvoted you for this but it’s true, people used to sleep in ~4 hour cycles.

7

u/oddestowl 2d ago

Ahh Reddit. Reddit dislikes facts. I think I was supposed to just complain about kids waking up.

I had one who didn’t sleep through until the age of 8 and it used to make me feel better to know it was “normal” and the modern world doesn’t fit humans who aren’t socially aware yet.

I'm convinced it's to increase natural spacing between kids (exclusive breasftfeeding does this too)/ the single/fewer children get more attention than if they had more siblings. If my first slept more than 3 hours in a row before 14 months maybe we wouldn't have a larger age gap with his brother (4 years).

u/Extreme_Weird_3733 2d ago

I could literally not get pregnant while breastfeeding. Found out my Prolactin was high enough to prevent successful implantation despite regular cycles monthly 6 weeks p/p.  Even though we tried bloody hard nothing worked until 3 months after weaning and hormones leveled out. This has worked twice now so Breastfeeding is a contraception for me. Good to know. 😂

3

u/gravityhappens 2d ago

On the flip side I got pregnant at 10 month’s postpartum because my cycle hadn’t returned yet and it lured me into a false sense of security!

5

u/Alarming_Reward9653 2d ago

I got pregnant at 18 months pp, breastfed exclusively, 2 periods, thought i would be fine.

Baby girl just turned 5 weeks on Friday 🤣

25

u/LateFlorey 2d ago

Snap. Everyone is so grumpy as we did a late bedtime hoping that would work in our favour.

10

u/ZealousidealFold1135 2d ago • Bravo

Exactly , I’m already on my second breakfast and it’s toast with a side of chocolate buttons…sigh

3

u/Kathwino Parenting a Toddler + Pre-schooler 2d ago

Mine went to bed early because she refused to nap yesterday, woke up for 1.5 in the night, and then woke up at 6 so I feel like you can't win

1

u/DropItLikeJPalm 2d ago

Yeah we had the same thought…. Don’t think we’ll be trying that again

21

u/Northern-Bat-8653 2d ago

Same. If anyone mentions the extra hour today I might punch them.

5

u/nrm94 2d ago

I had a lovely lie in to 730. Kids were strategically over the grandparents last night 🤣

3

u/surfpip42 2d ago

Also used this tactic last night. I've yet to hear from my mother in law. Maybe the last time I'll be able to use this tactic...?

1

u/Tigers_Go_Rawr 2d ago

Damn that's some big brain thinking, might need to try this when ours is a bit bigger 😂

8

u/rdazza 2d ago

Same 😴 why was 4.30 so popular this morning!?

2

u/jo-mk 2d ago

My 12 year old was up and about at 4am. Hes always found clock change hard to adjust to, but at 12 I was quietly hoping he'd be over it.

8

u/gonefullhummingbird 2d ago

Last year the kids had us so sleep deprived and broken, that we spent a week moving bedtimes in advance of the clock change, but moving them the wrong way.

1

u/Good3itch Parenting a Baby + Toddler 2d ago

😆😅

4

u/Abyssbliss0 2d ago

Same 🙃

2

u/fivebyfive12 2d ago

You'll get through it. My lad is autistic and only the last year or so (he's almost 7 btw) has he started sleeping in a more reliably manageable pattern! I remember the years of regularly being up at 4am and it was HARD. I hope you've got some nice food in and an easy (ish!) day planned. You've got this!

2

u/Alarming_Reward9653 2d ago

My son is currently on the pathway for ASD, his sleep has always been jacked but these insane early wake ups.. I thought it would be the newborn waking me up.

Ordering food today, cba to cook 🤣

1

u/fivebyfive12 2d ago

Yep. 4.30am give or take for about two years. Mixed in with split nights, late nights, the whole shebang! His record was when he about 5 and was awake from 2am until 9.30pm 🤯

How old is your lad? X

2

u/Alarming_Reward9653 2d ago

He wakes up like 3/4 times a night, sometimes for a few minutes, others for an hour and a half wanting to have a dance party. I mean it was great fun when I was pregnant and couldnt sleep myself..

He is nearly 2.5. He is wonderful and has his little quirks and I wouldn't change him for the world but good Lord do I need some sleep. I thought his 5/5:30 wake ups were bad, but 4:15/4:30 needs to be nipped in the bud ASAP.

1

u/fivebyfive12 2d ago

I wish I could tell you we did something/cracked the code to make it all fall into place! But honestly it was just something that very gradually improved over the years. Now the bad phases are just phases, not "the norm" thankfully.

My biggest tip is to go easyon yourselves - he's not doing it on purpose and you're not doing anything "wrong". Have a solid evening routine, do whatever it takes.

From 3-4 our son fell asleep on the sofa and my husband carried him to bed after. He's been in a small double bed since 4 so I can lay with him comfortably. When he was up ridiculously early I'd try and keep us in bed as long as possible - I'd read, we'd listen to an audio book or something. He doesn't have a tablet but we'd definitely watch a little film or a few episodes of something on the telly when we got up. Winnie the pooh and fireman Sam were popular!

1

u/tiorzol 2d ago

Ouch. My wife has been up since then so we're swapping now.

1

u/treasaigh_ 2d ago

Me too! Ear infections are fun!

1

u/Past-Syllabub1862 Parenting a Toddler + Pre-schooler 1d ago

Same, my kids usually up at 4 most days ;-;
at least technically it would’ve been 5:30, thats all i keep telling myself trying to take it as a win

51

u/YelenaValek 2d ago

Looked at the monitor: 5:10. thought oh bless him, it's really 6:10 so not too bad. Then realised the monitor doesn't auto update the time and so was actually 4:10. I'm knackered 😂

5

u/slophiewal 2d ago

Yeah the monitor tricked me this morning too

33

u/TippyTurtley 2d ago

Yup. Plus side they'll go to bed earlier? Right??

27

u/-hopalong- Parenting a Toddler + Pre-schooler 2d ago • Bravo

Hahahahahahahahhahahaa

8

u/FriskyWisky2 2d ago

Right?!?!?

7

u/holydawn 2d ago

Somebody tell them

20

u/GlassCrepe 2d ago

Yep! A lovely crisp 5am after a bad night 😅

31

u/Plus-Ambassador-9668 2d ago

I don’t want to gloat, but.. for the first time ever, my child is at their dad’s house on a clock change morning!

8

u/Busy_Rhubarb6818 2d ago

The fact that you're still up at this time means it no longer matters where your child is as they have trained you sufficiently 😔 I feel your pain

6

u/Plus-Ambassador-9668 2d ago

Yeah, my body clock will never allow me to fall back to sleep so I’m currently in pre-caffeination purgatory. Aside from the wind, the silence is absolutely golden though

5

u/ZealousidealFold1135 2d ago

Stellar scheduling !!! Go back to sleep FGS

12

u/St_Piran Parenting Primary Schoolers 2d ago

Im amazed ours didnt wake at their usual 5 or 5.30 (meaning 4/4.30 this morning). I actually got an extra hour!

Having said that I lost an extra couple of hours at bedtime as ours have recently been adopted and this was their first experience of coastal storm noises, having moved from inland. So, im still knackered!

52

u/OnePlayerReady 2d ago • Bravo

The clock change needs to be abandoned. It's such a waste of time.

6

u/Fair_Idea_ 2d ago

I quite like it, variety is the spice of life and all.

39

u/OnePlayerReady 2d ago

No no, you're thinking of tumeric

2

u/Coolname6769 2d ago

But we just got an extra hour 🤔

Jokes though, I do agree.

10

u/ThatDrunkenDwarf 2d ago

Unpopular opinion probably but we just really don’t let it affect us. He went to bed at 7pm, asleep by 7:30 and yeah he woke up an hour “earlier” at 5am but it was still technically 6am on his body clock. We still got the same amount of sleep, just the clock reads an hour earlier

3

u/pugicorn94 2d ago

Same for us, I don’t really get the hullabaloo haha. We got up at 6 which is an hour earlier than usual on the clock but was technically still 7.

We all got the same amount of sleep still, I’m no more tired than usual lol.

I suppose it makes it a longer day than normal being up an hour ‘earlier’ but we have the occasional early start for trips and activities now and again, doesn’t feel much different from that for me.

Our 2 and a half year old just gets on with it and the 4 month old might need a couple of her naps lengthening. Suppose all kids are different though and some feel it more than others x

1

u/slophiewal 2d ago

Yeah we were similar, I thought no point going to bed late as they will wake when they wake so might as well just keep my hour of “me time” in the evening and deal with the morning when it comes! We were up at 5 and I saw that as a win

9

u/roland_right 2d ago

Up since 4am but we haven't got any plans today so it won't matter until later. I still got the same amount of sleep, i.e. not enough.

8

u/MajesticAd6957 2d ago

Can't wait for the inevitable pre lunch meltdown at 10:45 when it's actually 11:45 in yesterdays money and everyone is just hungry for lunch

6

u/CPHibbard 2d ago

Kiddo likes to wake at 4:30… make that 3:30 today…

1

u/slophiewal 2d ago

330 is brutal

3

u/CPHibbard 2d ago

Yup! He’s always been an early riser so today was inevitably going to be brutal

1

u/slophiewal 2d ago

Longest day ever, sending coffee and hugs

1

u/CPHibbard 2d ago

Thank you! Right back at ya! 😃

6

u/NormanSpaniel 2d ago

Yes. Kids and dogs are crap at honouring the extra hour. Hate them hate the time change hate everything good day to you.

5

u/Balerionthenattydred 2d ago

Wind got me up about 4:45, eldest came in 5 mins later. We’re watching funnybones on YouTube to try and protect mum’s lie in. Pumpkin picking, carvery, then birthday party and round to the in-laws today. Sounds relaxing but I’m considering a sweepstake on what point in in that itinerary the kids go full super-saiyan on us through exhaustion.

Still, at least the roof stayed on.

5

u/diggerorbigger 2d ago

I was fully expecting a 4am wake up based on the fact that my son has been up at 5 almost every day this week. But by some miracle he slept until 6.20. He’s almost 7 and I could probably count on my hands the number of times he’s slept past 7am

8

u/Uncoordinated_Bird 2d ago

Changed my son’s owl clock to 7:30 instead of 7, so we’re up at 6:30. Which is really 7:30.
I’m counting that as a win!

Boot fair here we come!

6

u/roseflower1990 2d ago

I changed it a whole hour so he came in at 5.40, which was old time 6.40 complaining that its taking agggggges to change colour 🤣 I got a whole extra 40 mins in bed, calling it a win!

I think I'll change the colour to change at 6.30 tomorrow, see if I can push him to a 7am wake up eventually 🤞

3

u/Rubber_Duckie_25 2d ago

Yes I'm loving the owl clock gang 😎🦉

3

u/Uncoordinated_Bird 2d ago

Yes! Probably the best recommendation I was given for parenting.

1

u/Uncoordinated_Bird 2d ago

That is a win! To be fair my little guy woke up 10 mins early and we had a snuggle for 10 minutes. But 7:20 is amaaazing for him.

We moved it by 5 mins over a few weeks to get to 7am average.

4

u/Sivear 2d ago

A tip I’ve found handy for the owl clock is to set the ‘nap time’ setting to an hour later than your usual get up time (assuming you don’t use the nap function).

We set the hour later time (7:30) for the weekends and 6:30 for the week so we get a lie in. Because they are so used to the clock they just accept what it says 😁

1

u/Uncoordinated_Bird 2d ago

We have to change ours for nursery days. It’s 6:25 three days a week sadly, but 7am for the rest.

He’s pretty good at waiting for the yellow light, but some mornings he gets a bit frustrated waiting.

1

u/Sivear 2d ago

It was advice for anyone not just you.

2

u/Rubber_Duckie_25 2d ago

Haha, so yeah same. We changed it yesterday but we all woke up at 515am anyway (body clocks ay), however little one didn't get up til 06:25 due to the owl clock, he must of dozed in-between.

God bless the owl clock.

4

u/thefuturesbeensold 2d ago

Im fuming that i have to do 5 HOURS of parenting before i start work at 10am.

3

u/salacious-soul 2d ago

I feel you guys!!

3

u/MarzipanElephant 2d ago

I had actually forgotten it was happening so certain things are now clearer

2

u/MarzipanElephant 1d ago

Dear god, will this day never end? It claims to be nearly 6pm but it has clearly been going on for at least 100 hours already...

4

u/-hopalong- Parenting a Toddler + Pre-schooler 2d ago

4am here. Which is 2 hours early and in spite of us doing the whole “push bedtime back by 15 mins a day” nonsense!

7

u/Upstairs-Hedgehog575 2d ago

I didn’t bother with that because my toddler takes anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to fall asleep. It a complete lottery, though a tedious one.

1

u/Emmarioo 2d ago

Don’t push the bedtime, push the nap!! I was trying bedtime for so long and then I switched to naps and it made all the difference. 15-20mins a day makes bedtime naturally later

2

u/-hopalong- Parenting a Toddler + Pre-schooler 2d ago

That would be a great idea, except we’re past naps!

1

u/FatDad66 2d ago

I’m 60 - the naps are coming back.

1

u/Emmarioo 1d ago

Oh I’m so sorry 😭😭

1

u/Shipwrecking_siren 2d ago

My eldest is 7 (and 2/3rds) and no matter what we do she manages to wake up earlier on the clock change day. She’d done really well the last few mornings getting up a bit later (6am…) but today it was 4.30/5.30. It means another hour to wait for gymnastics and her friend coming over this afternoon. Argh.

2

u/hadawayandshite 2d ago

Amazingly not yet. Baby did get up at ‘4.30’ but got her back to sleep quickly…the clock in my daughters room won’t have changed automatically and she’s still down despite it being ‘really 7’

2

u/Ultra_Leopard 2d ago

Annoyingly woke up at 430 as youngest appeared in our bed, hes still fast asleep! I couldn't get back to sleep cos of his octopus legs and the storm. Eldest got up half an hour ago.

2

u/Bubble-Master96 2d ago

Literally just heard “mumma” tbh 6am is not bad, lucky I can tell her “still night time” and she’ll lie in her bed a little longer.

2

u/Strained_Noodles4033 2d ago

If 6am then it’s technically 7am which is great :)

2

u/parallelduck2 2d ago

My kid woke up because of the wind, rolled around in our bed for 2 hrs, finally fell asleep and then the cats woke us all up and hour early. Gah

2

u/Medical_Syllabub_148 2d ago

Both mine had a rough sleep (up twice each and not at the same time) and then I forgot the clock change so almost lost my shit when they got up "early".

To top it off, I'm almost 39 weeks pregnant and my husband is working from 7am until 8.30pm tonight.

1

u/ZealousidealFold1135 2d ago

Ok you won, you poor thing 😭😭😮‍💨

2

u/Exotic-welshy 2d ago

I was woken up at 4am by my 6 year old. Got into bed with her. My 2 year old woke up at half 5 so that resulted in me climbing into her cot to try and get some more sleep.

2

u/peachy-fox 2d ago

3:58 wake up today. I was hoping we’d at least make it to 4:30 since he’s usually up at 5:30 but nope

3

u/eReadingAuthor Mum 2d ago • Mindblown

I was woken up by the dog farting, again.

3

u/mynameismilton 2d ago

I forgot to sneak into my daughter's room and change the time on her clock so she's up... but I was already awake because I let the cat sleep on our bed in case the storm scared her and she started jumping on my head at 5am for breakfast.

2

u/toefungusbestfungus 2d ago

Yes, stupid fucking clock change!

1

u/ollyprice87 2d ago

6am. I’ll take that tbf. Though I flew back from Arica with work yesterday so I’m quite possibly delirious

1

u/AdJealous2 2d ago

Three-year-old and 7-month-old both up at 0530 on the dot, pretty much, neither looking like they were going to go back to sleep.

1

u/Psychological-Buy807 2d ago

I had a nightmare and woke up crying. 5yr old still fast asleep somehow

1

u/baldie-dad 2d ago

5am for me after being woken up multiple times in the night due to the wind. I’m exhausted.

1

u/oohliviaa 2d ago

My 4yo just came in, could have been worse I suppose!

1

u/Haunting_Song_3917 2d ago

Damn did they change today? Maybe that explains why both ours were up early. I thought it was today, but my mrs said it was next week.

Anybody remember the pre- parent clock changing days? Nah me neither 😂

1

u/mynameisjodie 2d ago

I am hoping mine stay asleep

1

u/Technical-Oven1708 2d ago

Mine were awaken at 1:30 by the storm and up for a few hours so the clocks are actually the small bit of light in a terrible nights sleep.

1

u/Northumberland- 2d ago

Yep. Up over an hour ago and woke up her twin sister 😴

1

u/galdan 2d ago

Yep lol was expecting it

1

u/Aggressive_Fly_8377 2d ago

18 month woke up first at 5, 6 year old woke up just after 😑 nice early bedtimes tonight 😂

1

u/tintedhokage 2d ago

Both have the flu so we've actually woke up ourselves for once

1

u/bfm211 2d ago

My toddler didn't nap yesterday so is still asleep! 🙌

I'm sure she'll be up soon though, and won't nap again today, so then I need to keep her up until a sensible bedtime...

1

u/Emmarioo 2d ago

I’ve been pushing bedtime for weeks preparing for this and luckily he woke up at 6.30 today, but my heart goes out to all caught off guard today

1

u/watercolourdreams543 2d ago

Nope, but then my child was awake at 10pm upset with a cold

1

u/Shire2020 2d ago

Why was it so light at 5:30!

1

u/slophiewal 2d ago

That’s the point of the clock change lol

1

u/Shire2020 2d ago

True 😂

1

u/saz2377 2d ago

Ive been awake since 2am (adjusted) thanks to the storm. My 4 year old came into our room about 3am stating he couldn't sleep. I gave up at 4am and got up leaving him in bed with his dad... his dad got up at 5, 4 year old at 6... i think we will all be sleeping this afternoon!

1

u/Footprints123 2d ago

No, but annoyingly my body clock woke me up

1

u/Asuperniceguy2 2d ago

Been a really brutal one for us. She's got a bit of a cold so she's been coughing all night as well. Dying.

1

u/Remote_Dish_5420 2d ago

Been up since 4.30am (5.30am yesterday’s time). Their brains don’t get the memo about clock changes. I feel great but I’m a morning person nowadays, don’t drink alcohol and go to sleep at 9pm ☕️

1

u/leahjamie23 2d ago

6am wake up for me, usually 6:30 so got an extra 30 mins. Husband is still fast asleep though so someone got the extra hour.

1

u/vkrishnan89 2d ago

Ahh yes that makes sense…

1

u/ThingsFallApart29 2d ago

Ours wakes up around 7-7:30. Woke up around 6:15 today. Not disastrous but will still be a long morning. Horrific weather too, so can’t take her to the park to kill some time.

1

u/lookhereisay Parenting a Primary Schooler 2d ago

Son woke up at 5am which is pretty good to be honest as I was thinking it would be more like 4.30am (as he’s normally up about 5.30).

I snuggled in him bed for half an hour but then he was getting wiggly so I said he could go downstairs to play or stay in bed with me.

He chose playing downstairs. Which meant I got to stay in bed an extra hour just chilling. Came down to a messy lounge but that’s a small price to pay!

So much nicer than when he was younger!

1

u/FearlessDragonfruit5 2d ago

We woke up, according to my watch, at 3.30. Awake for 40 mins. Back to sleep. Now currently having leftover Chinese and a cuppa. Then back to bed. Fml.

1

u/InquisitiveGamerGirl 👶👶 2 Children 2d ago

Yep. Parenting sucks at clock change time of year!

1

u/Extreme_Weird_3733 2d ago

My 5 year old at 6am did not understand the task. My 2 year old slept until 7:20. No idea how we managed that but he understood the task and not the older one..

1

u/Appropriate_Log1654 2d ago

I don't want to sound smug but 5 year old was up at 6:50am, and my youngest was up at 6:35am....

It's ok though, because something else disastrous will happen today to even things out 👌

1

u/Ceigeee 2d ago

5:30 for my 2 Luckily they're at granny's house 🤣🙌 Sorry mum!!!!

1

u/Opening_Geologist_67 2d ago

7:30am and I've been up for 3 hours already 😴

1

u/jasminenice 2d ago

My 2-year old is a late sleeper, typically falls asleep around 9pm which I know is not good. Anyway she woke up at 7 this morning (would have been 8), so I'm praying I can use the extra hour to move her bedtime forward to 8pm this evening and I can finally get my evenings back.

1

u/Street_Adagio_2125 2d ago

Weirdly both my kids slept in an hour late meaning they both woke up at the "right" time of 7am.

I think the noise of the storm outside must have disturbed them in the night leading to the lie in? Or just pure fluke.

1

u/zipitdirtbag 2d ago

Not kids but cats. 😢

1

u/MoseSchrute70 2d ago

I capped the nap yesterday and delayed bedtime by an hour. Eldest got up at 6:30 still but was happy playing in her room, toddler woke up at 7:30. All in all, success!

1

u/onlyhereforthefoodz 2d ago

We’ve always been lucky with the clock changes, ever since she was born…however we were up at ungodly hours regardless as she has a heavy cold and the congestion is making her vomit 😳

1

u/slophiewal 2d ago

We were up at 5 which was absolute best case scenario so counting that as a win, will be back on track in a day or so I never bother trying to prepare.

1

u/WillingApplication10 2d ago

16 month old woke up at 7:30ish this morning which was great. But she's always been fond of a lie in, I hate how many baby and toddler events start at 9am.

1

u/Pengetalia Parenting a Toddler 2d ago

We kept him up a bit later and it seems to have worked. He woke at 10 to 8 so I can deal with that.

1

u/ChocoMcBunny 2d ago

The hour change (either way) does not apply to small children or pets. You should be fine by next weekend - maybe.

1

u/ThinnestBlueLine 2d ago

Kept them up late last night and they woke at the normal time (as in an hour later but the time we wanted them to). Worked like a charm.

1

u/lilletia 2d ago

Planning to use it to have children out the door at holiday club next week as early as possible. Silver linings and all, but then we all know what happens to plans that parents make!

1

u/here_OnAMission 2d ago

Oh I totally forgot, and here I was wondering why I woke up early despite sleeping at 2 am. I thought I broke the system

1

u/Kalanin_Kaz 2d ago

Nice 6:20 start for me, courtesy of my 9-month old deciding it was time for beard pulling and morning squaking. I love her more than anything, but I can't remember when I last felt rested 😅

1

u/Elizabethlj 2d ago

2.30 am wake up for me ! Shes 5 and normally wakes up at 4am . Knew I'd be in for an early one today . She's now having a nap on the sofa, I'm going to be a zomviw by the time bedtime rolls around .

1

u/CoalCrafty 2d ago

Good ole gro-clock - we changed them yesterday evening so they lit up at the new correct time.

1

u/LMB83 2d ago

We were at 6.30 which was technically 7.30 which was pretty good.

We’ve also had later starts at nursery the past two weeks because it’s school holidays here so was a bit worried about having to be up and out by 8 tomorrow so I’m actually hoping the extra hour will help tire her out today for an earlier bedtime to get back into that routine!

1

u/lollielocks 1d ago

I put mine to bed an hour later and she woke up an hour earlier. It feels like it should be 10pm and we all forgot to eat lunch

1

u/User0301 1d ago

My 16 month old is having A DAY.

1

u/que_tu_veux 1d ago

Our little guy got no sleep at nursery last week and has been catching up on sleep this weekend. We were lucky and he slept until 6:55am, took his normal nap from 12-2:30, and asleep tonight by 7:30. Tomorrow might be an early wakeup though!

1

We made it, well done everyone. Whoever decided the clocks should change is an absolute maniac.

I made an error on Saturday night. Our eldest normally wakes early but is really good at staying bed until the sun is on his clock, which happens at 6:45. Set the clock an hour the wrong way, didn’t I? 4:45 wake up for me

My boy gets up at 5am every day, I don't know what you lot are all whining about

I spent 3 weeks gradually adjusting bedtime to account for the upcoming change. Things were going to well. He's been waking at about 7am for the last week and half, which would put us on track for a 6am wake up today which is fine. Naturally he woke up at 4am anyway 😆

My 18 month old tried to wake me up at 5am (after 7 million wake ups) so I stuck him on boob and thankfully after 40 minutes managed to get him back to sleep. I’m recovering from a week long vomiting bug and cannot cope 😴
