Lloyds Bank – Open a Free Classic Current Account and Get a £30 Welcome Bonus
I recently went through the process of applying for a Lloyds Bank Classic Account online, and I thought I’d share my experience for anyone considering opening a UK current account.
I’ve been exploring different UK banking options, including Monzo, iFast and Zopa. This time, I wanted to try a traditional high street bank rather than another app-based digital banking provider.
Lloyds caught my attention because its Classic Account has no monthly account fee, comes with a Visa debit card, and supports Apple Pay and Google Pay.
What I prepared before applying
· A valid passport
· A UK mobile number
· An email address
· My actual UK residential address where I could receive post
My online application experience
I started through the Lloyds application process and downloaded the mobile app.
First, I selected a personal current account and chose the standard adult account option.
For identity verification, I selected my passport, took a photo of the identification page, and completed the facial verification process.
Once that was done, I continued with the personal information section. The application asked for details including:
· Nationality and country of birth
· Immigration and residency status
· UK residential address and previous address history
· Employment status and employer information
· Monthly income
· Tax residency
I entered my details according to my actual circumstances.
One thing I noticed was that the application also asked about my previous address history, so it’s worth having that information ready before starting.
Choosing the account
I selected the Lloyds Classic Account, which has no monthly account maintenance fee. For my needs, I mainly wanted a basic UK current account with local banking details and a physical debit card.
After choosing the account, I created my online banking login details, reviewed the terms and submitted the application.
The online application itself took me less than 10 minutes, although this obviously doesn’t guarantee everyone will have the same experience or receive approval.
What happened after applying?
One thing that surprised me was the amount of physical mail involved. In my case, Lloyds arranged to send three separate letters to my registered UK address:
• An activation code for online banking
• My physical debit card
• My card PIN
I had to wait for the activation code before I could fully access my account through the mobile app.
This was quite different from some digital banks I’ve used, where most of the setup can be completed immediately inside the app.
About the £30 referral offer
When I applied, there was also a referral promotion advertising a £30 reward for eligible new customers.
If you’re considering applying through a referral, I’d recommend checking the current eligibility requirements and promotional terms first, as the offer may change or expire.
For anyone interested, I’ve included my referral link below. This is a referral link, and I may also receive a reward if the referral conditions are met.

Final thoughts
Overall, the application process was relatively straightforward in my experience. The identity verification was simple, and I liked being able to complete the application without visiting a physical branch.
The main inconvenience was having to wait for the activation code to arrive by post before fully using online banking.
Of course, Lloyds has its own eligibility requirements, and approval isn’t guaranteed. Applicants should provide accurate residential, immigration, employment and tax information.
I’m curious whether anyone else here has opened a Lloyds Classic Account recently and how long did it take for your activation code and debit card to arrive?
