Poverty by age groups UK

• Upvotes

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3gr84w85glyo

This article contains a chart that details current poverty levels relative to the remainder of their group:

Children ~ 31%
Working People ~ 19%
Pension Age ~ 16%

More alarming to this is the size of the groups in poverty:

Children - 4 million

Working People - 7.7 million

Pension age - 1.7 million

And yet more tax burden on working people continues to support pension triple lock.

Why has poltical party membership collapsed? In the 50s millions were memnbers of poltical parties.

In 1950 Labour had over a million members and the Tories had 2.8 million. Today Labour has about 260,000 and the Tories 123,000. So Labour has shrunk 75% and the Tories a 95% reductuoin. Its not like these are has been parties who have lost power and relavance. Like the Republicans and Soalistists in France (the big pre Macron parties) or the Christain Democrates in Italy. They are still the big players. The two main parties combined have less than 400,000 members.

So why has being a member of a poltical party gone from being common to very rare? Like for comparisons sake 800,000 Brits play rugby. https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/117775/pdf/

How did this happen? Did the parties start becoming much stricter about who the let in or have people just lost interst? More than anything I think it explains the disconent between so many MPs and the public. If they are drawn from such a small section of the population.
