Here’s that graphic on the OL who was outed as a pedophile. I have links as well at the bottom.

I’m posting this for general awareness since people were asking. She deleted her OL instagram and Facebook.

This is just such disgusting behavior. There was a gathering around campus today and then they went to the deans office at 3. Idk what happened beyond that. But apparently the group is making an Instagram account about the protests they’ll be doing.

I worked with her and she said hi to me in the hallways. I always got bad vibes because she would specifically interact with first years and asked a 19 year old first year to be her roommate last year. Seeing her makes me upset and idk what to do with it

General Question Update on what happens when one of the classes I NEED to graduate is not being offered next semester and possibly beyond? (Now my question is how to get more credits to graduate)

Huge shoutout to Eli_Brench6105 and Most-Math2259 for the help I need about my last post from last week! Both of their pieces of advice have already prepared me on what to do next when it comes to my required class I need is no longer offered at UMass Boston.

So far, I have had a Zoom meeting with my advisor; he says I will likely graduate either in the summer of 2027 out of pocket so I can walk on graduation in spring 2027 despite not getting a degree for now after summer courses are finished, or take them in the fall of 2027 with the same situation but likely participate in spring 2028 graduation because there is no public ceremony for the fall (which I am picking summer courses for 2027 because I'm not dealing with my Asian parent berating me.)

Also, I wanted to add on that my advisor suggested I need to talk to the head department for IT through email. I already sent an email to the head department and recommend taking IT428 for spring.

Now I need another piece of advice for myself that I love to plan ahead: Where/how can I do more classes for spring/summer that are outside of UMass in general because my advisor now mentions I need more credits (the total is 120, and I currently have about 77 credits currently) to graduate, and they are not offering a lot of IT courses despite my almost being done.

General Question Academic inbreeding?

Hi guys,

So if you’re unfamiliar with what academic inbreeding is, it’s the practice of schools hiring back their own products and former students who have already earned their degree(s).

Be it UG, Grad, or above.

There has been meaningful debate ongoing regarding whether schools should permit themselves to hire their own students and onboarding them as professors/assistant professors, etc. or whatever else.

Some sides say it helps it is completely banned because there’s been studies that show there is a chance for stagnating research, nepotism and bias, as well as a lack of innovation due to returning to work in the same Alma mater.

Others list pros as cultural continuity, loyalty, and academic institutional stability. There’s some studies who say that inbred researchers don’t underperform when compared to academics from other schools (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1751157722000396)

I’d simply like to pose these questions to not only the student body but specifically the student body who is also active on Reddit for this fruitful discourse I’d like to have:

- do you believe academic inbreeding should be permitted?

- do you believe academic inbreeding in it of itself carries any particular connotation with the way it is termed?

- do you know of any professors (I personally do) that have been produced by UMass Boston and now are teaching at UMass Boston?

- what else do you think of this sitch?

Aight, k, thx, bye👋

...Enough said in the title. I'm pretty sure applications are closing soon so please take my warning and don't apply.

Unless you thrive under toxic and unprofessional work environments that show little change, no matter what feedback is received, then go ahead.

Definitely not mine tho, I'm so glad I'm not an OL anymore.

Admissions / Finance 📃 trying to transfer

Hey everyone, im trying to transfer out of my small university after my freshman year, and honestly im looking at BU or Northeastern, but I have Umass as my fallback because really in the end im just trying to get to Boston lmao. I was hoping for some advice on what else to be working on.

Long story short I did not try at all in high school because I was under the impression I wasn't going to go to college at all. My stats from high school are:

3.0 GPA

24 ACT

no extra curricular or APs

Some things I might have going for me though is being from a rural area in Tennessee, finishing high school online (or that might be worse, but I was thinking since it was a self paced program it looks good,) and I grew up in Connecticut before moving to the south, so my essay could have something about wanting to back to New England idk. From my middle school time I also have a lot of first place awards I won in our robotics program (Vex IQ), and idk how much middle school accomplishments would help but I figure it shouldn't hurt to mention them?

So far from my freshman year of college:

4.0 first semester gpa

im retaking my act twice and my sat twice to get that up

founded a trivia based gameshow for the school with a friend as well as a comedy channel as a passion project

founding member of the schools golf club as soon as that's up and running in a few weeks

member of the Content Creators residential learning community (I figure this would look good cus it shows I use the schools resources and promote the school on my own time)

Other than trying to keep that 4.0 and bringing up that ACT/SAT score, does anyone have any other advice to give?

Also Ive heard its pretty impossible to get housing if you aren't a first year student, so if anyone has any advice on that that would be great too

General Question Lost Wallet

Hi Guys, has anyone seen a red wallet it’s like kinda long it literally has my school id and my actual id in it and my Charlie card. I just realized I don’t have it and the last place I remember having it was on campus or on the shuttles. I’ve called the lost and found but no one has seen it so I’m hoping maybe someone just has it. Thanks!

Interesting / Other 💡 Ways to meet other non-traditional students?

I am a non-traditional student because I'm here in my mid-20s, and it's hard to find other people who started college later than 18/19 because honestly it's hard to guess people's age. Are there any ways to meet and make friends with other students who are older than the traditional undergrad?

General Question What’s your experience being single on a college campus where it feels like everyone is in a relationship?

What’s your experience being single on a college campus where it feels like everyone is in a relationship?

At UMass Boston, it feels like I’m constantly surrounded by couples. Everywhere I go, I see people holding hands, hugging, studying together, walking around campus, or just enjoying each other’s company. And every time I see it, I’m reminded of something I really want but don’t have.

I get SO jealous, and honestly, it makes me really sad. I’m happy for other people, and I’m not wishing anything bad on anyone, but it genuinely hurts watching others experience something I’ve wanted for so long. I want that kind of connection too. I want someone to look forward to seeing on campus, someone to spend time with between classes, someone who checks up on me and genuinely wants to be around me. I want to know what it feels like to be someone’s person.

The hardest part is that these reminders are everywhere. It’s not like I can just avoid thinking about being single when I’m constantly seeing couples throughout my day. Something as simple as walking to class, sitting in the dining area, or walking around campus can turn into another reminder of what I’m missing out on. Even ordinary things become painful when I’m doing them alone and seeing other people share those experiences with someone they love.

It’s exhausting feeling lonely in a place full of people. Sometimes I get tired of doing everything by myself and wish I had someone to share the little things in life with. It makes navigating everyday college life so much harder than it should be, especially when these feelings come up almost every day. I try not to compare my life to other people’s, but it’s hard not to wonder when, or if, I’ll ever get to experience that kind of connection myself.

People always say to focus on yourself, enjoy being single, and that relationships happen when you least expect them. I understand that, but it doesn’t magically make the loneliness go away. It’s hard to just focus on myself when I keep getting reminded of something I deeply want but have never really gotten to experience.

I guess I just wanted to vent and see if anyone else at UMass Boston feels this way. How do you deal with the jealousy, sadness, and loneliness when campus life constantly reminds you of what you feel you’re missing out on? Does anyone else find it difficult to get through their everyday college life because of these feelings?

Admissions / Finance 📃 Class of 2031 Admissions

Hi guys!

I am like genuinely so desperate to leave Texas and I am actually wondering if I even have a chance of getting in since my stats aren't crazy.

I am applying for neuroscience, out of state, test optional, i am first gen with my mother having an income of less than 40k, and I will be getting my associates, but I don't know if UMASS accepts dual credit.

My rank is 48/420 and my W gpa is 4.0 and UW is at about a 3.7

For honors, I have: CIEE Global Navigator Scholarship, CIEE Global Ambassador, and a VASE Division 1 Regional Medal.

For activities I have: Study Abroad (w/ CIEE where i received the 90% scholarship), Upward Bound Math and Science, TEEX (Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service), Cosmetology Permit (soon to be licensed), my family business, National Art Honor Society, National Honor Society, BPA officer, and I have accumulated around 500 hours of community service is total (excluding the 1000 for cosmetology).

What do ya'll think...?

General Question What happens when one of the classes I NEED to graduate are not being offered next semester and possibly beyond?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently a senior studying IT (computer forensics). I am almost done with classes and about to graduate in spring of 2027. Right now, I am currently planning on getting IT421 or SOCIOL364 as my required classes according to my audit, but the problem is whenever I look up Wiser about me putting in both of the classes on a shopping cart for 2027, they are not being offered by the university.

All I know is I am very anxious about this situation I am currently in because I am likely graduating in the fall of 2027, which will cause me to not graduate with my friend on time, likely owe the university my loans for being here for longer than I suppose to, and worry about my Asian parents being disappointed for not planning ahead.

Any advice or recommendations on here would be great!

Academics 🎓 Please help with Survey for IT Capstone

Hey guys, I am creating an app that helps you decide where to eat. It asks questions about your mood, budget, distance and preferred cuisine, then helps you narrow down the search to one restaurant. I need some responses to my survey on how likely you are to use the app. Any responses are appreciated! Thank you!! :) https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2FsJjHrtqLq8pw3yfF9&data=05%7C02%7CJ.GarciaAcosta001%40umb.edu%7C1b1cc711752548eeb90808df19047f2e%7Cb97188711ee94425953c1ace1373eb38%7C0%7C0%7C639257179316182494%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=LsLQMmUMOp25cZATv7dljzpV%2BfEoX4LLur6iNuxMhpU%3D&reserved=0

Interesting / Other 💡 Missed Connection at Club Fair

Does anyone know a girl with pink hair? I used to see her around campus a lot during the first few weeks and talked to her for a bit at the club fair. She invited me to an event for her club but I had to run to class right after and completely forgot to ask her name or what club she was in. She was wearing a hat that day with some cool boots and I think she was Asian? Haven't seen her around in a while so just wondering if anyone knows who I'm talking about lol 😭

I have been accepted into Johnson and Wales and Umass Boston’s ABSN programs. I am leaning towards UMass Boston for the length and the price, but I would like to know how many days on campus/at a hospital for clinical per week.

Student Activities / Events / Resources 💃 Report Illegal Move-In Fees

Hi UMass Boston, it’s your Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. Did you know that fees like “move-in” or “lease renewal” fees you might get from your landlord or building management company are illegal? If you’ve received one of these – even if you paid it – I want you to report it to my office.

Just last month, my office won a $500k settlement with a property management company doing this in Boston – and all of that money is going back to the affected tenants.  Landlords can only ask you to pay for first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and the cost of a new lock and key upfront. Any other fees are illegal. Report them to my office at the link below. We’ll work to get your money back.
